CHAPTER SIX TUCSON, ARIZONA Twenty-Seven Years Later The sun beat down on the Amtrak station where the tower clock read 3:30 P.M. The few people on the loading platform threw quick glances up the track and consulted wristwatches, while others stayed in the shade and watched the workers at the corral and feeding pens by the spur track that ran a few yards away. Soon to depart were arriving passengers. Many were making last minute calls on cell phones. Drivers found parking places and their charges hurried into the station with a variety of luggage. People coming to greet travelers filled the platform and the hum of voices was everywhere. The train was only a speck in the distance when the sun struck it, flaring brilliantly for a moment, as it roared toward its destination. Cab drivers
