CHAPTER NINE Flynn heard the cry of gulls and the thunder of the ocean’s surf. Then he saw the gray water and the puffs of low clouds brushing the white-frothed tops of the waves. A woman was walking down the beach and the mist made it appear that she was somehow suspended over the sand, but then the mist tore free and the woman was walking on the sand again. Coming closer, she picked up a stone and threw it over the water and watched it skip.
