Chapter 4

509 Words
After Charlie left, I found myself deep in contemplation. I reflected on my marriage. I met Charlie through a friend’s introduction shortly after my graduating from university. At that time, I had opened a studio: it generated enough income for my needs, but I lacked connections to increase my earnings. Wealthy individuals often establish various social circles, making it challenging for an outsider like me to penetrate their networks. It was then that a friend introduced me to Charlie. Charlie’s uncle, Vincent, is quite accomplished. He built the WT Group from the ground up. At that time, Charlie was also newly graduated and worked under his uncle. Vincent had no children, leading to rumors that Charlie would inherit the WT Group. However, my concerns went beyond this. Charlie is tall and handsome, resembling a model. When he gazes at you with those deep blue eyes, you might think you are his entire world. On our dates, he always behaves as a true gentleman, and I greatly appreciated that. Moreover, he successfully opened the door to an upper social circle for me. We dated for six months before getting engaged. Shortly after our engagement, a female college friend of Charlie’s, named Sara, reached out to me. Sara sought me out primarily to share the story of Charlie and Abigail. According to Sara, Charlie and Abigail were a perfect couple in college. If Abigail had not moved to Paris right after graduation, they would likely have married. Sara also mentioned that Charlie still holds feelings for Abigail. At parties, he has reportedly told friends that Abigail is the woman he can never forget, and that I am merely someone suitable for marriage. After Sara expressed her thoughts, she scrutinized me closely, her face revealing blatant sympathy and pity. I understood Sara’s hidden motives; she simply aimed to mock me. If she genuinely cared about my well-being, why didn’t she inform me before the engagement? Sara's current intentions clearly aim to provoke a dramatic confrontation between Charlie and me, seeking to witness chaos and humiliation. I wondered what animosity lay between her and Charlie. Was it possible she harbored feelings for him and sought to ruin his marriage? I discreetly assessed Sara, and I could not dismiss that possibility. Nevertheless, I had no intention of giving her the satisfaction she sought. I smiled and said, “Thank you for sharing me so much about Charlie. I've always known he is a loyal person, and that is a advantage I admire in him.” Indeed, Sara’s smile faltered, replaced by a comical yet rigid expression as she asked, “Leila, don’t you mind at all? Aren’t you concerned that once Abigail returns to New York, Charlie might choose her over you?” I responded, “I truly love Charlie and wish for his happiness. If the day comes when he must leave me for Abigail, I will only wish them well.” Thus, Sara stared at me in stunned silence, unable to utter a word. Now, that day seems to have truly arrived.
