When the Village Stood Still

372 Words
When the Village Stood Still By midday, the whole village of Umuaka had gathered at the edge of the sacred forest. No one stayed behind in their homes—not the elderly, not the children, and certainly not the stubborn ones who usually feared nothing. News had spread like wildfire: the الأرض had opened up, and something mysterious was stirring beneath it. Men gripped their walking sticks tightly, while women held onto their wrappers, murmuring prayers under their breath. The children, typically loud and full of energy, stood unusually silent, hiding behind their mothers. At the heart of the gathering were the elders. Chief Okonkwo stepped forward, his face etched with both worry and authority. Next to him, the village priest, Dibia Nnanna, clutched a staff adorned with cowries, his gaze fixed on the glowing c***k in the earth. “This is not ordinary,” Dibia Nnanna said in a hushed tone. “The spirits are trying to communicate… but not all messages are meant for everyone.” A ripple of murmurs spread through the crowd. Amara stood at the front, her feet firmly planted on the ground. The light beneath the earth pulsed stronger now, like a heartbeat, sending a strange warmth coursing through her body. “She should step back,” one elder warned, pointing at her. “Young people must not approach such power.” But before anyone could pull her away, the wind suddenly picked up. Dust swirled around them. Trees shook violently. The once-bright sky darkened as thick clouds rolled in above the forest. Then—it happened. A deep, resonating sound erupted from beneath the ground. BOOM. The c***k widened. Some villagers screamed and collapsed to the ground. Others fled, but many stood frozen in fear, unable to move. From the opening, a brilliant golden light shot upward, forcing everyone to shield their eyes. And slowly… something began to emerge. It was round. Perfect. Glowing with patterns that seemed to dance like living symbols. The Egg of Life. Gasps filled the air. “No…” Dibia Nnanna whispered, stepping back. “It has chosen to reveal itself.” The Egg hovered just above the fractured earth, radiating such power that the very air around it shimmered.
