The Second Trial The forest was still far from normal. Even after the shadows had disappeared, the air felt thick, as if something deeper had been stirred. The broken gate throbbed slowly, almost like it had a heartbeat of its own. Amara took a deep breath, finally managing to steady herself. The glow on her arm had mellowed, no longer wild but alive—attentive. Kelechi got to his feet, still looking rattled. “If that was just the first test, I can’t even imagine what the second one will be like.” The Guardian turned its gaze toward the darkness beyond the gate. “You will not face fear again,” it said. “You will face a choice.” Amara frowned. “A choice?” Without another word, the Guardian raised its hand. The world shifted. The forest vanished. Amara found herself back in Umuaka. Everything seemed normal—the huts, the trees, the chatter of villagers. Children dashed past her, giggling. Women were gossiping. Life felt… serene. “Amara!” She turned around. Her mother stood there, beaming at her. “Where have you been? Come inside, dinner is ready.” Amara’s heart tightened. “Mama?” Kelechi stood next to her, looking puzzled. “How do we get back to the village?” The Guardian’s voice echoed faintly, distant yet clear: “The second test is desire.” Amara’s chest rose slowly. “This isn’t real…” she whispered. But it felt so real. Her mother stepped closer, taking her hand. “You don’t have to go anywhere. Just stay. Everything is fine.” For a moment, Amara wanted to believe that. No danger. No burden. No destiny. Just home. Kelechi scratched his head. “If this is an illusion, it’s a good one. I could hang out here for a bit.” Amara shot him a sharp look. “If we stay, we fail.” He hesitated. “You sure?” he asked quietly.
