Chapter Seventeen: Beast in the Bunker

1009 Words
The Mojave Desert stretched endlessly under a pale moon, the jagged peaks of distant mountains silhouetted against a sea of sand. Buried beneath the arid wasteland was an old military bunker, once a stronghold of American military might. Now, it served as the nerve center for Vex Arcane—a digital terrorist and Kaine Maze’s final target. Kaine crouched at the entrance, his armor blending seamlessly into the shadows. Pred’s voice hummed in his ear, brimming with his usual sass. “Vex Arcane. This guy has issues that make yours look tame. You sure you don’t want to nap first? Maybe rehydrate?” “Keep talking, Pred,” Kaine muttered, “and I’ll reprogram you to narrate nature documentaries.” “Touché. Let’s see if Vex is as scary as his encrypted emails.” The bunker door was a rusted monstrosity, but Kaine’s hand hovered above it, and with a spark of energy, the steel groaned, reshaping itself into a silent opening. “Entry complete. Pred, scramble his systems.” “Already on it. The guy’s about to get a masterclass in humiliation.” The bunker was dimly lit, a labyrinth of exposed pipes, flickering LED strips, and a low hum of machinery. Massive server racks lined the walls, their screens blinking erratically as Pred made his presence known. At the center of it all stood Vex Arcane. The man was tall and wiry, his pale skin almost translucent under the harsh light. He wore a trench coat riddled with glowing circuitry, his eyes glinting with amusement behind sleek glasses. “Ah, the architect of my misery,” Vex said, his voice dripping with mockery. “The infamous Black Tide. You’ve come to die.” Kaine stepped forward, his boots echoing in the vast space. “No, I came to burn you.” Vex chuckled, then did something Kaine didn’t expect—he shrugged off his coat, and his body began to contort. “You didn’t think I’d be a simple hacker, did you?” Vex growled as his spine elongated and his muscles bulged grotesquely. Fur sprouted from his skin, claws extended from his fingers, and his face twisted into a monstrous, bear-like snarl. “Erratic,” Kaine muttered. “Big f*****g man bear,” Pred added. “And he’s pissed. You know. Now, might be a good time to run.” Vex lunged, his claws slicing through the air like guillotines. Kaine teleported a split second before impact, appearing behind a server rack and using its metal to conjure a sleek, razor-sharp spear. He hurled it at Vex, who swatted it aside with one massive paw. “Is that all you’ve got?” Vex roared, his voice echoing like thunder. Kaine grinned, summoning a trio of drones from the scrap around him. They zipped toward Vex, firing concentrated energy bursts. The bear-man roared in fury, ripping through one drone and smashing another against the wall. The third detonated in his face, but he emerged from the smoke unscathed, his fur charred but intact. “Damn,” Kaine muttered, dodging another swipe that tore a chunk out of the concrete wall. “This guy’s built like a tank.” “Correction,” Pred said. “A pissed-off tank with claws.” Kaine vaulted over a console, his hands glowing as he transformed debris into a pulse cannon. He fired, the energy blast slamming into Vex’s chest and throwing him backward. But the bear-man recovered almost instantly, charging with terrifying speed. Vex slammed into Kaine, sending him skidding across the floor. Sparks flew as Kaine’s armor scraped against the ground. He barely teleported away in time to avoid the claws that slashed where his head had been. But Vex was fast. Too fast. He hit Kaine with a Speed Blitz that left his armor torn and his chest and back bleeding as Kaine couldn't dodge fast enough. “Yeah,” Pred said. “Might want to step it up, genius.” Pinned behind a crumbling console, Kaine clenched his fists. He focused on the metal around him, trying something new. Slowly, he extended his energy outward, connecting to the objects without touching them. “Come on,” he growled, sweat dripping down his face. The air shimmered, and the debris lifted into the air, reshaping into a fleet of sleek, glowing drones made entirely of energy. They hovered, humming with raw power. Vex paused, his beastly snarl faltering. “What the—” “Try these on for size you, b***h,” Kaine said, his voice cold. He pointed, and the drones attacked. The bunker filled with chaos. The energy drones zipped around Vex, their blasts piercing even his armored fur. Vex howled, swinging wildly, but the drones were too fast. One by one, they burned through his body, leaving glowing wounds that didn’t heal. “No!” Vex roared, his voice cracking with desperation. “This isn’t over!” “Oh, it’s over,” Kaine said, summoning a massive energy bolt. He hurled it like a javelin, and it struck Vex square in the chest. The bear-man froze, his body trembling. Then, he exploded into ash, the energy consuming him from within. The bunker was a wreck. Kaine’s armor was shredded, across his chest and back, where he had been too slow to avoid those wicked claws, revealing torn flesh beneath. He stumbled to a broken console, collapsing onto it. His hands glowed one last time, creating a sleek injector filled with a healing serum. “Pred,” he mumbled, “remind me to patent this.” “Yeah, after you stop bleeding everywhere,” Pred replied. Kaine injected himself, the serum working instantly. His wounds closed, leaving no new scars, the pain subsiding. He leaned back, a tired smile on his face. He had used his power more and quicker than ever. It would see he had found his current limits. “It’s done,” he said softly. “They’re avenged.” And with that, Kaine passed out, the glow of his drones fading into the darkness.
