Kaine sat in the war room, listening as Pred combed through police communications. The law enforcement network was surprisingly easy to access, thanks to outdated security measures that Pred dismantled with minimal effort. Kaine leaned back in his chair, staring at the red-pulsing quantum computer as Pred’s voice cut through the silence.
“Got something,” Pred said. “Shreveport, Louisiana. Super Projects. Full-blown gang war. Three sides. Police are pinned down, and civilians are caught in the crossfire. Perfect warm-up, don’t you think?”
Kaine stood, changing his armor from its compact backpack form. “Yeah, sounds perfect.”
The halls of the Super Projects in Shreveport were a war zone. Once envisioned as a solution to the housing crisis of 2028, these towering, interconnected blocks had become grim, concrete labyrinths ruled by gangs. The dim, flickering lights in the narrow corridors cast long shadows on walls covered in graffiti. Broken vending machines and piles of trash littered the common areas, and the air was thick with the stench of sweat, desperation, and blood.
Kaine landed silently on the rooftop, his armor’s stealth mode rendering him invisible against the night sky. Pred’s voice crackled through the Smile Chip, a touch of excitement in his tone.
“Three gangs, one bloodbath,” Pred said. “Blood Fangz, Steel Jags, and Midnight Phantoms. Civilians caught in the crossfire. Police are trying to hold the perimeter, but they’re outgunned and outnumbered.”
“Perfect place to make an impression,” Kaine replied, his voice low and determined.
He moved to the edge of the rooftop, scanning the chaos below through his HUD. Gunfire echoed through the halls, bright muzzle flashes illuminating the dark windows. Screams of panic mixed with shouted orders and the occasional explosion. Kaine flexed his hands, his pulse cannons warming up as he dropped down onto a narrow balcony, landing with barely a sound.
“Let’s get to work.”
Inside, the chaos was deafening. Blood Fangz gang members, clad in red bandanas and wielding modified shotguns, fired indiscriminately down the corridors. The Steel Jags, their cybernetic enhancements gleaming under the flickering lights, charged through walls and doorways like tanks. The Midnight Phantoms moved like ghosts, their cloaking tech making them nearly invisible as they ambushed both sides.
Kaine stepped into the fray, a silent predator in the storm. The first Blood Fangz member to spot him opened fire, shotgun blasts ringing through the hall. Kaine didn’t flinch as the pellets ricocheted harmlessly off his armor.
“Who the f**k—” the gang member started, but Kaine cut him off with a pulse blast to the chest, slamming him into the wall.
“Language,” Kaine muttered, stepping over the unconscious body.
A Steel Jag enforcer, towering and heavily augmented, barreled toward him. The man’s cybernetic arms gleamed with deadly energy as he swung a massive fist. Kaine ducked under the blow, his retractable blade snapping into place. With precision, he drove the blade into the enforcer’s knee joint, severing hydraulic lines. Sparks flew as the brute crumpled to the ground, cursing and clawing at the air.
“Stay down,” Kaine said, firing a non-lethal EMP blast that left the enforcer twitching.
The screams of terrified civilians drew Kaine’s attention to a common area where families huddled behind overturned furniture. Bullets ripped through the walls, sending debris flying as the gangs exchanged fire.
“Pred, deploy the drones,” Kaine ordered.
“Right away,” Pred replied.
From compartments in Kaine’s armor, marble-sized spheres rolled out and scattered across the floor. The orbs began to expand, their smooth surfaces unfolding like blooming flowers. Within seconds, the drones stood at full size, sleek and armed with an array of tools for defense and aid.
The drones zipped into action, shields projecting around civilians as they escorted them to safety. Some deployed medical kits, patching up injuries and stabilizing victims. Others flew straight into the fray, creating barriers that blocked bullets and neutralizing gang members with non-lethal shock pulses.
A young girl clung to her mother as a drone hovered above them, shielding them from gunfire with a shimmering energy field. Another drone carried an elderly man out of the line of fire, its thrusters humming softly as it navigated the chaotic corridors.
The Midnight Phantoms tried to capitalize on the confusion, their cloaked figures darting through the shadows. But Kaine was ready.
“Pred, tag the Phantoms,” Kaine said.
“On it,” Pred replied.
Red outlines appeared on Kaine’s HUD, highlighting the hidden gang members. Kaine fired precision shots from his pulse cannons, each blast finding its mark and dropping a Phantom before they could react.
One Phantom lunged at him with a blade, but Kaine sidestepped effortlessly, catching the weapon mid-swing. He twisted it from the attacker’s hand and sent him sprawling with a brutal kick.
“Better luck next time,” Kaine said, his voice cold.
The police, pinned down at the far end of the hall, watched in disbelief as Kaine dismantled the gangs with surgical efficiency. Officer R. Delgado, a rookie with short-cropped hair and a look of sheer exhaustion, stepped forward, her gun trembling in her hands.
“Who the hell are you?” she demanded, her voice cracking slightly.
Kaine turned to her, his glowing red eyes cutting through the smoke-filled air. “Black Tide,” he said, his modulated voice carrying a weight that made her flinch.
Before she could respond, a Blood Fangz member emerged from the shadows behind her, his weapon aimed at her back. Kaine moved faster than the eye could follow, firing a pulse shot that dropped the thug instantly.
Delgado spun around, her eyes wide. “You… saved me.”
Kaine said nothing, turning back to the battlefield as the last of the gang members were subdued. The drones finished evacuating the civilians, folding back into their marble forms and returning to Kaine’s armor.
Within minutes, the chaos had subsided. The halls of the Super Projects were silent, the gangs defeated, and the civilians safe. Kaine activated his stealth mode, vanishing into the shadows as the police moved in to secure the scene.
