My mom was already paying for the tie, one she picked way too meticulously while I waited at the counter. She held it up twice, examined the stitching, asked the saleslady if they had “a slightly deeper forest shade,” then decided this one was fine after all.
Amara’s arm circled around mine as she leaned closer, her perfume drifting in the space of the boutique. “You picked green?” she asked, even though she already knew the answer. I nodded and glanced at the tie. I picked it for a reason. It was the same color as the dress I bought for Mina yesterday.
We could… match, I guess. Not that I’d say it out loud.
“Did you know?” Amara continued, her voice turning soft. “It’s also my favorite color—”
