As Mark and Evelyn approach her apartment building, a sense of unease washes over her. Parked in the lot is a familiar car, one that stirs up memories she's been trying to forget. However, due to the influence of alcohol, Evelyn fails to recognize the vehicle. Mark, noticing her intoxication, kindly assists her to her apartment. Evelyn falls asleep on the couch, exhausted from the night's events. Suddenly, the doorbell rings, startling Mark who is about to leave. He opens the door and finds himself face-to-face with a tall, well-built man. The man asks to see Evelyn, but Mark refuses, telling him that she is asleep. The man insists, and a quarrel ensues. Mark lies, claiming that Evelyn is his girlfriend, hoping to deter the stranger. However, the man is not convinced and their argument turns physical. Mark is no match for the stranger and ends up with a bloody nose, lying on the floor.

After the scuffle, Mark manages to get up and, feeling defeated, decides to leave. He doesn't want to involve Evelyn any further and is embarrassed by the situation. He quietly gathers his belongings and leaves Evelyn's apartment, still nursing his wounded nose. Thirty minutes pass, and he is gone, leaving Evelyn alone and unaware of the confrontation that just took place at her doorstep.

Evelyn wakes up the next morning, groggy and with a slight hangover. She notices the front door is ajar and immediately senses something amiss. She recalls the previous night's events and realizes Mark must have left without closing the door properly. As she gets up to close the door, she spots a note on the floor.
