Evelyn’s heart was a battlefield of emotions as she navigated her days. The conversations with Min-jun and Mark replayed in her mind, each word weighing heavily on her decisions. The choice she faced felt insurmountable, and the fear of making the wrong one paralyzed her.
One evening, while sitting in her apartment, her phone buzzed with a message from Brenda, her colleague. Evelyn glanced at the screen.
Brenda:How are you holding up? Remember to follow your heart.
Evelyn took a deep breath, deciding to heed Brenda's advice. She slipped into her tracksuits and decided to clear her mind with a walk around the park. The evening air was cool, and with each step, she wrestled with her thoughts. After some contemplation, she pulled out her phone and texted Min-jun.
Evelyn:Can we meet?
Min-jun’s reply came quickly.
Min-jun: Of course. I’ll pick you up at 19:45.
Evelyn’s heart raced. This meeting could either build or break their relationship. She prepared herself but opted for comfort in her tracksuits. As the minutes ticked by, her restlessness grew. She found herself peeping out the window repeatedly, hoping to see Min-jun's car.
Eventually, fatigue overcame her, and she fell asleep on the couch. She was jolted awake by the buzz of her phone.
Min-jun: I’m outside.
Panicked, Evelyn quickly gathered herself and went outside. Min-jun greeted her with a warm smile. “Hey,” he said, his eyes scanning hers. “Are you okay?” Evelyn nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. “Yes, I’m fine.”
They both fell into an awkward silence as they drove. Min-jun, feeling the tension, turned on the radio, hoping the music would ease the discomfort. The car ride was quiet, filled only with the soft strains of background music.
When they arrived at their destination, Evelyn was taken aback by the grandeur of Min-jun's penthouse. The colors were vibrant and alive, a perfect reflection of Min-jun's personality. Min-jun opened the car door for her and extended his hand. Evelyn ignored the gesture.
“Welcome to my place,” Min-jun said, leading her inside. Evelyn's eyes widened as she took in the view. “It’s beautiful,” she said. “Thanks,” Min-jun replied, smiling. “Make yourself at home. The kitchen is over there. I’m going to have a quick shower.”
Evelyn made her way to the kitchen. She opened the fridge and found her favorite ice cream. Deciding to make the evening special, she started preparing a meal: creamy pasta with steak and fried vegetables. As she cooked, she savored the ice cream, feeling a sense of comfort in the familiar task.
As she was frying the steak, Min-jun appeared behind her and wrapped his arms around her from the back. “Do you need any help?” he asked, his voice warm. Evelyn turned to him, a smile tugging at her lips. “No, just take a seat. I’m almost done.”
Min-jun settled at the kitchen counter, watching her as she worked. Evelyn soon finished cooking and served him his plate. “Could you bring some wine?” Min-jun asked, pointing to the cabinet. “It’s in there.” Evelyn brought the wine and glasses to the table. They started eating, and Min-jun took a bite. “This is delicious,” he said. “I could get used to having your cooking every day.”
Evelyn felt a warm blush on her cheeks as they continued their meal, accompanied by a few glasses of wine. After finishing, Evelyn started to clear the dishes.
“No need to worry about the dishes now,” Min-jun said. “Let’s just sit and talk for a bit.”
They moved to the lounge, each with a glass of wine in hand. Evelyn saw this as an opportunity to address her concerns.
“Min-jun, can I ask why you left without saying anything the other day?” she began. Min-jun’s face grew serious. “I had to leave in a hurry. My mother wasn’t feeling well.” Evelyn frowned. “Why didn’t you call or text me?” Min-jun sighed. “I was so focused on my mother’s health that I didn’t think about anything else. I’m sorry if it caused you any worry.”
Evelyn put her glass down and looked him straight in the eyes. “What about Ms. Joen, my former manager? What’s your relationship with her?” Min-jun met her gaze steadily. “There’s nothing between us. Our families are business partners, and that’s all we are—colleagues.” Evelyn felt a wave of relief wash over her. “Thank you for clarifying that.”
The conversation eased the tension, and Evelyn felt reassured. The evening continued with a new sense of understanding and closeness between them, as they enjoyed each other’s company and the warmth of Min-jun’s home.
Min-jun looked deeply into Evelyn’s eyes, his voice soft but filled with emotion. “Evelyn, I am madly in love with you. I want a chance to get to know you better, to be with you.” Evelyn felt her heart race. She looked away, unsure of how to respond. But Min-jun gently moved closer, his eyes never leaving hers. “I’m so sorry for leaving without saying a word. It was wrong of me.”
Evelyn’s resolve melted. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders, pulling him into a tight embrace. “I forgive you, Min-jun,” she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. Min-jun held her close, feeling the warmth of her body against his. “I really missed you,” Evelyn admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. Min-jun pulled back slightly, a teasing smile playing on his lips. “Really?” he asked, his tone playful.
Evelyn nodded, her eyes shining with sincerity. “Yes, really.” Min-jun’s smile softened. He leaned in and kissed her forehead tenderly. “I love you, Evelyn,” he murmured, his voice filled with affection. Evelyn closed her eyes, savoring the moment. “I love you too, Min-jun,” she replied, her heart full of hope and happiness.
As Min-jun’s words hung in the air, Evelyn felt a surge of emotions. She looked up at him, her eyes meeting his, and saw the sincerity and love reflected in his gaze. The world around them seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of them in that moment.
Min-jun gently cupped Evelyn’s face with his hands, his touch warm and reassuring. He leaned in slowly, giving her time to pull away if she wanted to. But Evelyn didn’t move; she felt a magnetic pull drawing her closer to him. Their lips met in a soft, tentative kiss. It was a gentle brush at first, a delicate exploration of each other’s feelings. Evelyn’s heart raced, and she felt a warmth spread through her entire being. The kiss deepened, becoming more passionate as they both surrendered to the emotions they had been holding back for so long.
Evelyn’s hands moved to Min-jun’s chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath her fingertips. Min-jun’s arms wrapped around her, pulling her closer as if he never wanted to let her go. The kiss was a perfect blend of tenderness and intensity, a promise of the love they were ready to share.
