Blackcliff Estate sat on the edge of a cliff like a fortress watching the sea. Mira pressed her forehead to the car window as they drove through the iron gates. The mansion rose in front of her, all sharp lines and dark stone. Lights glowed behind tall windows. The ocean crashed somewhere below, hidden by mist. She had expected a house. This looked like a place where secrets went to die. The car stopped under a covered porch. The same man who had picked her up from Volkov Tower opened her door. “Inside, please.” Mira stepped out. The wind hit her immediately, cold and sharp. She pulled her thin jacket tighter and followed him up the steps. The interior was even more intimidating than the outside. High ceilings. Polished floors. Art on the walls that probably cost more than her entire neighborhood. A grand staircase curved up into shadows. A woman in a neat black uniform was waiting in the foyer. Mid forties. Calm eyes. No smile. “Welcome, Mrs Volkov. I am Mrs Hale, the housekeeper.” Mira flinched at the title. Mrs Volkov. It did not feel real. “Just Mira is fine,” she said quickly. Mrs Hale’s expression did not change. “As you wish. Mr Volkov has asked me to show you to your room and explain the house rules.” Mira nodded. She was too tired to argue. They walked down a long hallway lined with doors. Mrs Hale opened one near the end. “This will be your room. Mr Volkov’s suite is at the opposite end of the hall. You are not to enter it unless he invites you.” Mira stepped inside. The room was large and beautifully decorated, but cold. A king size bed. A sitting area by the window. A private bathroom that looked bigger than her entire apartment. “Your luggage will be brought up,” Mrs Hale said. “Dinner is at seven. You may eat here in your room or in the dining hall. Mr Volkov usually eats alone.” “Usually?” “On nights when he is home.” Mira looked around. “Where is he now?” “Still at the tower. He will return later tonight.” Mrs Hale moved to the door. “There are a few rules you need to know.” Mira braced herself. “First, you are not to invite anyone to this estate without Mr Volkov’s permission. No friends. No family. No visitors of any kind.” Mira’s chest tightened. “Not even my mother or brother?” “Not without explicit permission. Second, you are not to post photos of the interior of this house, of Mr Volkov, or of yourself in connection with him on any social media. All public appearances must be approved in advance.” Mira nodded slowly. “Okay.” “Third, certain areas of the house are restricted. The west wing, the lower level, and the private office off the main library. If a door is locked, do not try to open it.” “What’s down there?” “Nothing that concerns you.” The words were polite but final. “Fourth,” Mrs Hale continued, “you are to maintain the appearance of a happy marriage in public. Smiles. Hand holding. Photos when required. In private, you will keep to your own spaces unless Mr Volkov requests otherwise.” Mira’s stomach twisted. “And if I break these rules?” “Mr Volkov will decide the consequences.” There was no threat in her voice, but Mira felt it anyway. “Is there anything else?” Mrs Hale asked. Mira looked out the window. The sea was barely visible through the mist. “Can I at least call my brother?” “You may use the phone in your room. All calls are logged, but personal calls are permitted.” Logged. Of course. “Thank you,” Mira said. Mrs Hale gave a small nod. “Dinner at seven. I will send someone with your luggage.” When the door closed, Mira let out a breath she did not realize she had been holding. She walked to the bed and sat down. The mattress was soft, the pillows perfect. Nothing like the lumpy secondhand bed she had at home. She pulled out her phone and dialed her mother’s number. It rang twice before Claire picked up. “Mira? Are you okay? Where are you?” “I’m fine,” Mira said. “I’m… staying at a friend’s place for a while. For work.” “A friend?” “Yes. It’s temporary. Just until things settle.” There was a pause. “And the money? Did you… did you do what that man asked?” Mira closed her eyes. “Leo’s surgery is covered. All of it. Your treatment too.” Another pause. Longer this time. “Mira,” her mother said softly. “What did you get yourself into?” “Nothing bad. I promise. It’s just… a job. A weird one. But it helps us.” “I don’t like this.” “I know. But Leo needs this. We need this.” Her mother sighed. “Just be careful. Please.” “I will.” They talked for a few more minutes. Mira lied about the friend’s name. She lied about the neighborhood. She lied about everything except the part that mattered. They were safe. For now. After the call, she stared at the phone in her hand. Logged calls. Rules for every breath. A husband who told her not to fall in love with him. She set the phone down and walked to the window. The mist had thickened. The sea was gone. All she could see was gray. A knock at the door made her jump. “Come in,” she called. A young woman in a uniform similar to Mrs Hale’s entered, pushing a small cart with food. “Dinner, ma’am.” She set the tray on the table by the window. Simple but elegant. Soup, grilled fish, vegetables, fruit. “Thank you,” Mira said. The girl hesitated. “Be careful,” she whispered, so quietly Mira almost missed it. Mira frowned. “What?” The girl shook her head quickly. “Nothing. Enjoy your meal.” She left before Mira could ask anything. Mira looked at the closed door, then back at the food. Her appetite had vanished. She walked to the tray and lifted the cover on the plate. Everything looked normal. Smelled normal. But the girl’s warning echoed in her head. Be careful. Careful of what? The house? The rules? Nikolai? She sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the tray until it went cold. Outside, the wind picked up. Somewhere in the distance, thunder rumbled. Mira pulled her knees to her chest and told herself again that this was for Leo. For her family. Nothing more. Even if the house felt like a cage. Even if her husband was a stranger. Even if every rule sounded more like a threat. She would survive this. One year. Then she would be free.
