Chapter 6

Lilly POV A little more than a week has passed, and life has continued in the same way. I get up, go for a run, go to work, go for a run, come home. Macy and I have met up for coffee a few times outside of work hours. We just completed the first round of test vaccines this week. If my samples have retained their integrity for 48 hours, then I believe we are ready for multiple stage testing. My brother keeps insisting I come to training but I don’t go. I keep having the same dream, running through the dark forest, rogues chasing me each night. Usually it’s rogue werewolves but sometimes it’s another shifter group. I’ve managed to wake up without any more cuts or bruises which is nice, but I’d love to have a night where I can sleep peacefully. Tonight, the Beta, Gamma and Alpha families are having a private dinner together in the Alpha quarters of the packhouse. We used to do this every other weekend but since we’re nearing the Ascension Ceremony the families thought it best to take one of our usual dinners out to add an additional day for planning. I’m helping my mother clean up breakfast when her eyes glaze over. She’s receiving a mind link. After a moment her eyes clear up, she shakes her head and goes back to doing the dishes. “Pack meeting at 1. Apparently, the Alpha of Valley Pack will be at this one.” My mother says draining the water and drying her hands. “I’ll be there.” “Everyone will be. This was a no exceptions call. Well, I’m off to training. Love you.” My mother grabs her training duffel and heads out the door. Her main job in the pack is to train the females, both the self-defense classes and warrior levels. Twice a week the males and females train together. Mom and dad oversee both training groups. My mother is also in charge of pack integration. When we get new species or families, even loners and rogues, mom, along with the Luna, does all their intake, assessments and recommendations. She places them in shared housing until something permanent comes available. “Love you too. See you at the meeting.” I ran upstairs and got ready for my run. Today I dropped my bag off at work and left Macy a note letting her know I’ll grab us something from the café on my way in after my run. Half an hour later I’m walking into the lab with an iced mocha with peppermint chocolate shavings on top for Macy and a Toasted White Mocha Frappe for myself. “Thank you! What do you think the meeting is about?” She asks me as I hand her the drink. She takes a long sip and groans in satisfaction. “I have just as good an idea as you do. Mom didn’t say much. Alpha Mitchel from Valley Pack is going to be there. Beta Jefferson is going to the school to inform the students and staff.” I say and her eyes grow wide. “Must be serious if they’re going to the school too.” I walk to the cooler in the lab and remove my samples. I pull them up to the microscope and take a seat. Macy stands beside me, and I can actually feel her mentally preparing. “Macy, you’re making me nervous.” “I’m just standing here.” I shake off the feeling and place the slide under the microscope. I took a deep breath and held it. Within seconds I released the breath and push my chair back quickly. I look at Macy with a huge smile on my face. She pushes me out of the way and looks at the sample herself. “Lilly…” “Macy.” “Lilly!” “I know.” “You did it. Lilly, you did it!” “We did it Macy.” “No, I helped, this was your science, your math, your genius! You’re a damn genius! “I need to make a phone call.” I rushed to the phone and place the order with the lab manager to get our test rats now that we have a viable vaccine. We’ve recently had success with infecting normal, everyday lab rats with wolfs blood, effectively turning them into were-rats, and I’m going to need at least thirty to start. Macy and I start to draft our findings, research notes and get a game plan set in stone between us so that we can start as soon as the rats arrive. We drop our notes off with our research team and ask them to start working on the next batches of vaccinations based on the exact formula I created. Before I know it, it’s twenty minutes till the pack meeting. Macy and I lock up and follow the rest of the research team and lab techs to the packhouse. When we enter the large hall where the meeting is taking place, everyone is talking about the possibilities of this meeting. Macy heads off to find her family to sit with them while I look for mine. I know we’re going to be in the front row somewhere. That’s where the Gamma and Beta families always sit when we aren’t on stage with the Alpha. Alpha Max crosses the stage and clears his throat, immediately the conversations die off and all attention turns towards the stage. “Thank you all for coming today.” Alpha Max addresses the group. “As you all know, recently the Lycan King, and a dear friend of mine, Michael Knight has passed and his son, Lucian Knight has taken the seat as the new Lycan King. All accounts thus far tell us he is a fair and kind man who should rule in the same ways his father did, so I would expect that nothing is going to change as far as how our packs function. He has started his introduction tour across the packs in his territory. As we are the largest pack within the territory as well as the furthest from the Royal Pack, we will be the last visit, as well as their longest stay.” A shiver runs up my spine at the mention of the Lycan King visiting. The room erupts with muffled conversation at this news before the Alpha can finish. Alpha Max allows the conversations to continue for a moment before he whistles loudly to regain the room. “Please hold your conversations till the end. In just under five weeks’, time, the Lycans royal caravan will arrive They will stay within Crescent Moon pack for a duration of one week. During this time, we will re-sign the alliances, and receive some additional training. Three days after his arrival, Alpha Mitchell will arrive and stay through the remainder of the week. Both will be here for the Ascension ceremony along with several other pack Alpha’s, Luna’s and guests. The Kings Beta will be assessing the summer training program, looking at the Elite warriors as well as the other ranks. Before the conclusion of their visit, offers may be made to potential Kings’ Guard recruits. If you wish to join the Kings Guard, this is the time to prove yourself. Your Luna and I expect all pack members to be respectful, as always, during the Kings visit. We expect nothing but positive outcomes for all members of both packs. I, for one, cannot wait to work with our new King to further all packs within the territories. Now please, everyone, go enjoy your weekend. The second Alpha Max turns from the podium I see a flash of purple in the corner of my eye and suddenly, Macy appeared. My mother jumped slightly not expecting it and I flashed her a quick smirk. Her witchy ways have always amazed me. “Well now we know! Can you believe it!?” She asks excitedly, her wild, curly red hair flopping around as she bounced on her toes. “The Lycan King.” She fans herself with her notebook dramatically. I laugh as I loop my arms with hers and wave to my parents. We’re off. I don’t have clinic duty today and Macy also has the afternoon off. We’re going to stay at my place tonight and have a girls night in. As Macy and I make our way across the packhouse lawn, I hear my name being called from behind. I turn around to see Beta Jefferson’s son, Marcus, the future Beta, coming my way. I groan internally. You see, Marcus is a man-w***e. He goes after every single female. He seems to think that his 6’2” frame that’s stacked with muscles, mixed with his chocolate brown hair and jade green eyes makes him some sort of irresistible God to women of all species. Macy and I both have avoided anything to do with him, though he has been persistent with both of us; me more so than Macy lately. “Marcus.” I say flatly. “Got a minute?” Marcus asks, rubbing the back of his neck and looking down at the ground. It’d be cute if it wasn’t him. “We can talk right here.” “Let’s go somewhere. Somewhere, private. I don’t want to talk… here.” “Right here is fine.” “Come on, Illy.” He says using my childhood nickname. The one he knows I hate, and he only knows because our families grew up together. Stupid close families. “Marcus… First off, don’t call me that. Second, I don’t want to go anywhere private and alone with you. Either we talk here, or we don’t talk.” I stand firm and when he doesn’t reply, Macy and I turn around to walk away. I’m not even a step away when Marcus grips ahold of my wrist and swings me back roughly. “Don’t walk away from me!” I rip my arm free quickly and take a few steps back. “Marcus, the last thing I want to be is ‘conquered’, by you.” “Lilly, wait you don’t understand. I… I think you’re my mate.” He blurted out I took a step back and scoff. “You think?” Macy interjects “What the f**k does that even mean?” “Bull s**t. If you really thought that where were you two years ago when you could find your mate? I may not have a wolf, but if your wolf recognized me as your mate, you would have said something a lot sooner. I’m not like any of the dumb bimbos who you trick into falling into your bed with their legs wide open. I’m not interested Marcus; I never will be. I’m waiting for my mate.” I spit out in a rage. Marcus takes two steps forward and reaches out to grab me again, the look on his face mixed with hurt and pure rage. Only this time, a shockwave erupts from the center of my body and he’s thrown backwards, landing on the hill by Eastern Wing of the packhouse. I’ve never seen anything like that before in my life. “Lilly, what the f**k was that? Did that come….out of you!?” Macy exclaims, standing back up from the ground. She hit the deck as soon as she felt the power erupt from me. Almost immediately my birthmark starts to burn uncontrollably. I don’t know what to do, so I do the first thing that comes to mind. I ran. I vaguely hear Macy yelling for me to stop but I ignore her shouting for me to come back and push myself to run faster and further. I didn’t stop until I was deep in the dark woods, heading for the clearing no one knows exists, where no one would come looking for me, not even Macy. Once I arrive at my destination, I fall, defeated and let the rest of the tears loose. As I let everything go, my body begins to vibrate, heat starts to build in my chest until it starts to burn. I let out a loud scream as the pain becomes unbearable and feel a force leave my body, similar to the force that launched Marcus across the lawn, only more powerful. The trees surrounding the clearing push backwards slightly by the shockwave, and they sway back and forth. I stared wide eyed for a moment before I collapsed onto my rear and started to take in the last hour of my life. After some time, I make my way back to the pack. As I come over the ridge near the training fields my wrist starts to itch. I’m trying to soothe it and as I’m just passing the training building the itch turns into a burn. It happens so fast, and I fall to my knees in pain. A blood curdling scream leaves my lips and my entire body curls in on itself on instinct. My vision starts to blur and black dots dance in my eyes, the last thing I see is a golden glow emanating from my wrist. I feel arms reach around me, my vision is clouded by my tears, and I’m lifted off the ground before my world turns black.
