Lilly POV
Time passes slowly here in the dark.
‘I wonder if I’m dead.’
‘You’re not dead.’ An unfamiliar voice calls out in a snarky tone.
I feel myself being pulled into reality, but the world around me is still dark. I walk around and seem to find myself in an endless dark void.
‘You’re in your mind. Well, our mind, actually.’ The voice says again, this time closer and clearer.
Turning to face the voice, I’m met with the most beautiful sight. A pure silver wolf. She bows her head and I notice the tips of her fur are blue and… glowing. Her eyes lock with mine and I realize she has the same color blue eyes that I do, only hers are glowing brightly, like her fur. I’m in awe.
“You’re beautiful.” I state with a smile growing on my face. “What’s your name?”
“Maeve.”
“Who… who’s wolf are you? Why are you here?”
“I’m yours, silly human.”
“I-I don’t have a wolf.” I say, looking away, ashamed.
“Correction! You didn’t, now you do. Well, you will,” she pauses, “It’s complicated. I’m here now, but I can’t break the barrier yet.”
“Where have you been? When you didn’t come on my 18th birthday? I thought…”
“That’s also complicated. I can’t really tell you much more than we’re special. You will know soon enough, trust the Moon Goddess. She’ll give you what you need, when you need it. Including me.” Maeve explained, moving closer to me and nudging me with her snout.
I placed my hands on each side of her head and brought my forehead to hers. I can’t explain the range of emotions flooding through me right now. ‘I can’t wait to tell everyone,’ I think to myself.
“You have to wait.” She interrupts my train of thought and I look at her shocked. “I’m in your mind… if you think it, I know it. You can block me out, but where’s the fun in that?” She answers the questions I didn’t even ask, and I keep my lips sealed. Nodding to her to continue.
“You must wait until your birthday. I will have to mask my scent until then, and Goddess forbid you get hurt, I must watch how quickly I heal you. The Moon Goddess will explain. I promise. Just trust me, her…us, trust us.” Maeve reassures me and the shame I start to let bubble up dies down. I’ll be 21 in a few weeks; I can hold out a few weeks.
“Maeve, why did I pass out? Why… why has my wrist been burning the way it has? Why have I been having issues with my birthmark for years now?” I ask looking down at my wrist, only to notice my birthmark is different. It’s… filled in more? The crescent moon now has a shadow that was never there before, and the diamond is a dazzling silver color that almost looks reflective when I move my wrist in the light.
“It changed!” I look back up at my new wolf.
“It’s not a birthmark. It’s a brand, from the Goddesses.” She states like it’s something I should know.
I look at her with a c****d eyebrow, waiting for an explanation.
“s**t, she was serious, you don’t know. I can’t give you all the details. You need to talk to your family. Your ‘birthmark’ as you call it, is more like a brand, or a tattoo, and as you ascend it will modify until it’s complete. It’s also going to burn like a mother each time it happens. It looks nearly complete though. It will look like mine.”
Maeve turns herself to the side and I see a crescent moon in black among her silver fur. It looks very similar to my brand, but more detailed. I try to absorb all the information she’s giving me and I feel like my head is spinning.
“I don’t understand. I’m special, but you can’t tell me how. My birthmark is actually a brand, and it means something, but you can’t tell me what. My parents have been keeping secrets from me and I can’t even tell anyone about my wolf!” I ramble, tears threatening to spill. I feel so lost and confused, elated that I will have a wolf but still so utterly lost.
“You need to ask your parents about your lineage and that’s all I’m allowed to reveal for now. We can discuss it more when that happens. It’s time to wake up. And don’t worry, I’ll be with you when you do. Just…don’t be upset with me okay?” Maeve says before I’m thrown into darkness out of nowhere.
Some time passes and I start to hear faint beeping and muffled conversation. I try to move my arms, but they don’t move, it’s like I’m paralyzed. I give up trying as the beeping becomes clearer and the muffled voices grow, louder. I figured out that I’m in the pack hospital, or at the very least a healer’s hut. I try to focus on the conversation happening around me and I’m able to pick out some words and parts of sentences.
“Her mark.”
“It’s time.”
“Truth.”
“Protect her.”
“She needs to know.”
The last one was my mother, and she sounds angry and sad all at the same time. Footsteps storm away, a door slams, and my father’s scent grows faint in the room. The beeping on the machine increases as my heart pounds like crazy at the sound. I hear my mother’s voice come closer to me.
“Illy, my darling. Please wake up. It’s mommy. Please wake up.” She pleads with me, and I feel her hand slide into mine gripping it.
I tried to squeeze her hand, but I still can’t seem to move. I’m growing frustrated but I try again. Finally, I can feel my fingers move slightly. My mother gasps and whispers something about the doctor before she lets go of my hand. I hear her footsteps run from me; my heart sinks, she’s leaving.
She shouts from the door for a doctor, before she runs back and grabs my hand once again, letting me know she’s here and that Daddy’s on his way back, my brother and sister are coming. I try to squeeze her hand again and I’m able to get a much better grip. The next thing I try to do is open my eyes, but a blinding light prevents that.
I turn my head to the side, and I feel the light dim. I try to open my eyes once again and have much better luck this time. The room is blurry but coming into focus slowly. I blink rapidly a few times trying to adjust my vision and I can see the doctor come into view and I look to my side to see my mother, teary eyed, next to me with a smile on her face.
I try to speak but my throat is so dry and cracked it hurts. Pointing to my throat, the doctor helps me drink a few sips of water from a straw. After a few moments I try to speak again but it comes out as a whisper.
“What happened?”
“We’re not entirely sure. We were hoping you could fill in some gaps. You were found outside the training building passed out. One of the warriors picked you up and immediately brought you to the hospital He said he heard a sickening scream and went running thinking it was a rogue or something but, he found you. Your father and I raced here as soon as we got the mind link. You’ve been out for five days!” My mother sobs and my eyes grow huge.
“Five days!” I cry, my throat is still raw.
‘Yeah sorry, in order to prepare your body for my soul, I had to kind of keep you knocked out for a while.’ Maeve says in my head causing me to physically startle in the bed.
“Everything okay dear?” My mother asks and I just nod my head remembering what Maeve told me.
“When can I go home?”
“Well, I’d like to keep you overnight to make sure you’re okay but if you get some food in you and hydration, I can see you going home tomorrow morning. Lilly, what happened?”
“I don’t know. I went for a run, like usual. Then I woke up here. Last thing I remember is crossing the training field.”
‘Nice.’ Maeve approved of my lie.
Lying to my family is something I’ve never done before, it’s not something I feel comfortable doing to anyone, but the message from Maeve was clear, so I had to alter my story slightly.
My stomach started to growl loudly, and my mother excused herself to get me something to eat from the cafeteria. As she was walking out, she ran into Macy and sent her into the room to keep me company. As soon as Macy saw me, she sprinted to me and jumped into my arms. She started to sob as soon as we made contact.
“You stupid b***h! You are not allowed to do that to me ever, ever, ever again! Are you okay? What the f**k happened to you!? Five Days, Lilly! You were out cold for no apparent reason for five f*****g days!” She cried holding onto me for dear life.
‘I like her.’ Maeve said, approving of my best friend.
‘Can I tell her? Please? My birthday is in less than two weeks. Also, next time you’re knocking me out for more than a few hours, a heads up would be nice.’ I beg.
Maeve goes silent. I’m not sure if she’s thinking about it or refusing to answer me.
“I have no idea. I was on a run trying to clear my head after what happened with Marcus. I started making my way back and when I was crossing the training field, my whole body filled with intense, unbearable pain suddenly and then I guess I blacked out.” I told her, and that was basically the truth. I omitted the shockwave from the clearing, only because she doesn’t know about it. It’s the one secret I’ve kept from her, she’d think I’m crazy for going in that forest.
“HOW did you do that to Marcus?!” She pulled away from me, staring at me directly in my eyes, refusing to break contact.
‘Tell her, she seems crazy, but trustworthy. I like her.’ Maeve finally answers in a mischievous tone.
“Okay, Macy. I have to tell you something and you have to promise me, on your life, on your wolfs life on your covens lives, you won’t tell a damn soul until AFTER my birthday. Okay?” I stared at my best friend.
I know I can trust her, but I have to be clear on this. Not a soul is supposed to know and the last thing I want to do is defy the Moon Goddess.
“Promise me bitch.” I push.
Macy gives me an excited smile and nods her head excitedly. She pretends to zip her lips and throw away the key making me giggle.
“I have NO idea what happened with Marcus, truly. I… I don’t know how I did that. But while I was out, my birthmark changed.” I said thrusting my writs towards her and she stared at it in awe.
“And I got my wolf. I can’t shift until my birthday but she’s here, and she’s perfect and her name is Maeve and you’re going to absolutely adore her.” I spilled out not leaving much of a gap in between words so she couldn’t interrupt me.
Macy’s mouth just hung open as she stared at me. She starts to come to her senses, and I can see she’s about to explode when the door to my room opens and I have to clamp her mouth shut to keep her from saying anything. My mom has returned with food, and it smells divine, for hospital food. I glance back at Macy and give her a look that tells her we’ll talk about it later.
‘You happened to Marcus.’ Maeve growled out.
‘What?’
“What?” Macy gasps and I look at her funny.
“Your eyes glowed for a second, what was that?”
‘Me’ Maeve growls in my head.
“Maeve, she told me that I happened to Marcus.”
“What?”
“I have no idea.”
