Chapter 9

2054 Words
Lilly’s POV It’s been two days since I was discharged from the hospital. Things have pretty much gone back to normal. Macy is the only one I’ve told about Maeve and boy did she have a lot of questions. What she looked like, why she was late, how I got her when I thought I’d never have one. I answered what I could. At home, my parents have started the preparations for my 21st birthday next weekend. Before Maeve came to me, I saw no point in a party, but now, I can’t wait to show my family. Summer break has started for the students, my sister graduated and I missed the ceremony because I was in the hospital and all around the pack, everyone is talking about the Lycan King’s visit. The Lycan Caravan will be arriving the day before my birthday and leaving the day after the Ascension Ceremony. Everyone is working on preparing our pack for their arrival. Between my birthday, the Lycan Caravan, and the Ascension Ceremony happening all around the same time, to say my mother is stressed would be the understatement of the century. She’s the Luna’s Gamma, and her best friend so she always helps plan pack events, especially since Beta Jeffersons mate, Rachel, seems to constantly be out of the pack visiting family when we’re planning or setting up the events. The pack is buzzing with rumors, mostly positive. A few, not so much. My parents told us at dinner last night that the Lycan King went on a rampage upon arrival at Blue Ridge, but they wouldn’t discuss why. If the information we have is accurate, he’ll be in Highland Peak in two days, and then making the drive to Crescent Moon, arriving Friday Morning, instead of Friday night as was originally intended. It’s all everyone can talk about, everyone except my parents. They have been suspiciously guarded since I got out of the hospital. I get myself ready for the day and head downstairs to join my family for breakfast. Mom wants to pick my brain for party décor, but I’ve told her anything she picks will be fine, she knows what I like. I don’t need a big celebration, just my family but my mother insists…every year. “Lilly, please, it’s your party, please help with some of the decision making. It’s a big day for you! You’re going to be 21, that’s a big deal, who knows what changes will come.” She exclaims looking at me hopeful. I hate keeping Maeve from her, but she will know soon enough. ‘I hate keeping this from her Maeve.’ ‘I know, but we must. We already broke the rules and told Macy, but no one else! You promised and I promised the Moon Goddess.’ “Mom, come on. I don’t really…” “Just pick the colors. Please. I’ll do everything else.” She shoves color swatches in my hands and pleads with me. Heaving a heavy sigh, I nod my head and start to look through the color samples she handed me. The first color I come across that catches my eye is this brilliant blue, the exact same color as the diamond in my birthmark, and Maeves eyes. ‘Brand.’ Maeve corrects, rolling her eyes. ‘I was born with it Maeve, still makes it a birth mark.’ I put the blue fabric down on the table and continue to sift through what’s in my hands. Eating my plate of pancakes, bacon and eggs while I flip through the stack on the table next to me. I can’t seem to find a color that matches this blue the right way until I come to the very last sample. It’s a brilliant, shimmery, silver-diamond color. Just like the color of Maeves coat. Maeve perks up and purrs in agreement from behind the barrier. “These two.” I say looking up from my plate. My mother comes around to my side of the table with her eyebrows pulled together. “Really? You’re sure? How about this purple instead of the blue?” She asks pushing a velvety, plum purple sample into view. While it’s pretty and goes well with silver, I want blue. When I’m able to shift, I hope my mother will put it all together. “No, Mom. You said you wanted me to pick. This is what I pick.” I repeated my choices back to her and handed her the swatches. “Well, okay.“ My mother says with a reluctant pause. “It’s your day after all.” With that she collects the samples, puts a smile on her face and leaves the room. Probably going to call her friend Dolly, the Luna’s main event planner. The rest of breakfast proceeds without incident. My sister, Sasha, finally makes an appearance. I can tell she just rolled out of bed. Sleep still in her eyes, her normally curly blonde hair sticking up in every direction. I’m sure she’s only awake because of pack training, otherwise she’d still be in bed. ‘She looks like she was just tossed around in a wind turbine’ Maeve says as we take in our sister, causing me to half snort, half laugh in response. “What’s so funny?” Sasha asks me with a yawn, sitting down to start in on her plate of food. “Nothing. Don’t worry about it.” I say as I wave her off and clean up my spot at the table. “If mom asks, tell her I went to hang out with Macy.” I say over my shoulder as I leave the kitchen, grabbing my purse, phone and keys on the way. Sasha just grunts in response. She won’t tell her, but mom won’t worry. She’ll figure out I’m with Macy quick. I’m always with Macy. As I start to walk towards Macy’s house my wrist starts to itch again. I place my thumb over my ‘brand’ and start to rub it in circles which seems to lessen the urge to scratch it. I remember a time when I was much younger, 11 or 12 years old maybe, and my wrist itched so bad I scratched it completely open. I healed just fine and the brand came right back. The outline looked darker when it was completely healed. I pulled out my phone and opened my text messages, finding Macy’s thread at the very top. ‘Headed to you.’ I typed out before hitting send. My message is read instantly, and the little typing bubbles pop up signaling Macy’s in fast reply mode. M: ‘Get out of my head bi-a-tch. I’m headed to you.’ L: ‘Café?’ Macy shot back three large heart emojis and a heart eyes face in reply. As usual, I’m at the café before Macy so I jump in line ready to place our drink order. I’m still full after breakfast but I know Macy’s going to want a sandwich. Once I get to the front of the line the cashier asks, “Macy coming today? You want the usual?” “Yes, for Macy’s only don’t give her the extra shot. She does NOT need that by the sound of it and just my coffee today, I had a big breakfast. Thank you.” I swiped my card and step to the end of the counter to wait for our order, just as Macy pops her head in the door. She comes to stand next to me I give her a huge smile. Her jade green eyes sparkle at me, and she wriggles her freckled nose my way returning my smile. “I ordered already, and I got you a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich.” “I love you.” Macy says as she sags into me faking exhaustion. Drama queen. She straightens herself up and faces me. “What’s on the agenda my dear sweet, almost 21-year-old, best friend? We need to go out, let’s go somewhere, do SOMETHING. We’re going to be way too busy starting next week between the Ascension and testing at the lab.” “Yeah, I have no set agenda. Coffee was it and that’s checked off.” I say as I pick my coffee up from the counter. “Whatever you want to do.” “Shopping. Definitely shopping, oh and food.” Macy replies as she takes a large bite of her sandwich, and we head out of the café. I just roll my eyes. By the time we’ve reached the packhouse garage her sandwich is gone. I spent years arguing with Macy about getting food while she’s already eating food. She’s a bottomless pit being half witch and half wolf will do that to you. She has a wolfs appetite and she burns off energy when she uses her magic so she always has to refuel. It’s pointless to argue. Goddess help her mate when she finds him. The packhouse garage is a massive structure. There are two floors below ground and three above. All pack residents can park their vehicles, if they choose, some use it while others don’t; it’s also used to park visiting guests. Alpha Max’s vintage car collection takes up a large portion of the bottom floor. Macy only takes her car home if it’s raining, she’s less than a five-minute walk from the garage. I’ll never understand how she lives closer to the café than I do, can literally teleport, but never gets there before me. Every time I ask her, she just shrugs her shoulders. She’s told me once that she didn’t always think of teleporting in the moment. I sent a quick text to my mom, letting her know where I’m going with Macy before I hop in the passenger seat, and we take off towards the city. We live in a secluded enough area that it’s going to take us two and a half hours to get to the mall, but this place is amazing so it’s worth it. We could have gone to any shopping center closer to the pack, there are plenty within an hour’s drive, but this mall is Macy’s favorite place, who am I to say no. Arriving at the mall I can pick up the scent of other packs, other wolves and supernatural creatures. ‘That’s new.’ I say to myself. ‘That’s me.’ Maeve says. ‘You’re supposed to keep your scent masked!’ I scold her. ‘Relax. Scents masked. You’re going to start gaining the advantages of having me remember? Heightened sense of smell, hearing, sight. You’re going to get faster, and stronger… way stronger. Oh….and that appetite that you pick on Macy for?’ ‘Don’t tell me.’ ‘Oh yeah.’ Now that I think about it, I could absolutely destroy a burger, fries and milkshake without blinking. “Highland Peak, Valley, and a few other’s I can’t quite distinguish.” Macy says as she rounds the car, sticking her nose in the air. “Yeah, I picked that up too, that there were other wolves here. I… I didn’t know we could tell which pack by scent.” I told Macy. I never had the wolf abilities, so I just never noticed. Rogues I can distinguish rather well, by sight and smell. They look ratty, had bloodshot eyes and some have entire patches of fur missing. To normal werewolves, rogues smell like rancid garbage and death. To me, they smelled like blood and wet dog. “You usually have to meet someone from the packs to be able to tell the distinction between individual packs, but we can always scent what creature or supernatural is what by smell too. You know what wolves smell like, witches, vampires, anyone in our pack individually now that you’ve got Maeve. Our pack has a hint of mint in the undertone of every member, because of the Alpha.” I lean into my best friend and take a deep breath inhaling her scent. She’s right, there’s a touch of mint mixed in with her natural raspberry scent. It’s nice. “I smell it. It’s like raspberries with peppermint, it’s nice!” I pulled back and smiled. Macy and I link arms and head into the massive structure before us.
