Lilly POV
I’ve been avoiding everyone. I wake up, get breakfast and crawl back to bed. Macy’s been covering the lab, and I’m even keeping her at arm’s length. I intend to tell her, but I’m still processing.
When I woke up this morning, I decided to stop feeling sorry for myself and get some questions answered. Once I was done with my shower, I threw my hair up in a messy bun and threw on my outfit for the day. Black ripped jeans, a grey tank and my favorite Papa Roach zip up.
I threw some concealer under my eyes to hide the dark circles that show just how tired I am. My normally bright blue eyes are dull and lifeless, my eyes red and puffy from all the tears. I have been finding sleep near impossible after the last dream with the Moon Goddess.
As I make my way downstairs, I can hear a hushed conversation coming from the kitchen. It sounds like my mother’s voice. I slowly make my way closer to them, trying to listen in.
I hear my mother’s strained voice clearly first; she sounds like she’s crying.
“She hates us, Jerry. My baby girl hates me.”
“She doesn’t hate us, my love. She’s going to need time. We still have to show her everything else. I don’t know how we’ll help her understand, but we have to try. We opened this door, we can’t close it now. But one thing will always stay the same, she is our pup, we raised her, we taught her everything she knows.”
The thought of the woman who raised me thinking I hated her broke my heart. She may not have carried me in her womb, or given birth to me, but these people raised me, loved me, cared for me. They’re still my family, they’re the only parents I know.
“I don’t hate you mom.”
I rounded the corner and went straight into my mother’s arms. We just stood there and cried with each other for a moment.
“I’m so sorry we lied to you baby.”
“Why? Why not tell me when I was younger?”
“You were five weeks old when Hestia brought you to us, she made us promise not to tell you until you came of age. We thought that meant when you got your wolf but then you never did, so we just waited for her to arrive. More recently, you started to show some of the signs Prince Malik explained to me once that could happen if any of their children came into their Fae side.
He told me that all Fae go through some form of physical pain before their awakening, but it’s not the same for everyone. He said that he experienced headaches so bad, he thought his skull was breaking open and his sister’s legs would ache off and on until one day she stepped out of bed and collapsed, her body filled with pain. She was convinced that she had broken them both, but they were fine within an hour.
I didn’t know him well, your birth father, but I did spend some time with him after he first met your mother. They were so incredibly in love. Not just true mates, but a true Goddess blessed pairing.” She explained to me, wiping the tears from my cheeks.
“We argued when you were in the hospital. I wanted to tell you then, your father was worried about what this would mean. If we would still be able to protect you.”
“I don’t know what I would do if anything happened to you, to any of you.” My father says quietly.
“Do Andy and Sasha know?”
“They didn’t. They do now. We told them yesterday after Andy lost his mind asking why you refused to talk to him.”
“I just needed time to take it all in, mom.”
“I have some things to show you.”
My mother stands and leaves the room. When she returns, she’s holding an ornate wooden box which she sets in my lap.
“When Hestia brought you here, she also brought this box. She said we were only to open it when you learned the truth. It’s remained locked and stored in my closet since the day you arrived.”
My mom explains to me and hands me the most beautiful necklace I’ve ever seen. Two crescent moons mirrored with a wolf howling below.
“It’s the key.”
She gently takes the key from my hands and shows me how it fits in the lock. I push the lock into the box and the top pops slightly.
“How did you know that was the key?”
“I have an identical box, we got them when we were younger from our uncle. When Hestia gave this to me, I immediately knew it was Rachels.”
I took a deep breath and only let it out when I opened the lid. Inside lay a silver velvet satchel. Underneath, a few documents and envelopes with a cloth bottom. I move the satchel to the side and start to look through the documents in the box. The first document is my birth certificate, my real birth certificate. I can’t take my eyes off it. The names of my birth parents in bold black ink.
Childs name: Lillianna Rose Asland-May Flynn, future princess of Lira
Mother: Rachel Leigh Harkness of the Arctic Moon pack
Father: His Royal Highness, Prince Malik Jackson Ashland-May Flynn, Prince and Future King of Lira
“When we officially adopted you, your last name changed to Mason, and we dropped the additional surnames. You were sworn in under the pack with your new name. It’s your choice which you choose to go by. The Alpha has been informed that we are explaining all of this to you, and he is willing to swear you in under your birth name should you decide to do so.” My mother explained.
Suddenly, the phone rang, and mom ran to answer, leaving me to look through the rest of the papers. I didn’t look at them all just yet. What I did look at though proved my identity. Royal decrees, blood tests proving familial lineage. The Fae kingdom seems thorough.
“He’s what!?”
My mother shouts from the kitchen. My father and I turn to look at her. Her eyes are huge as she listens to the voice on the other end.
“Y-Yes. I understand. We’ll all be there for lunch today and stay for the arrival.”
She hangs the phone up and slowly turns around and stutters out, “That was Mallory.”
“What did she want, mom?”
Maeve starts pacing and whining anxiously in my head.
‘What.’
‘He’s coming.’
‘Who, Maeve?’
“Um…the Royal Caravan is arriving early.”
She looks pale. My eyes grow wide. He’s early.
“The Alpha, Beta and Gamma families are expected to have lunch at the pack house today and then stay for the arrival of the King this afternoon.”
‘He’s early. The King is coming early. Why is the King coming early? Wait… why do I care?’
“Do you think this is a good thing?” My father asks.
“I don’t know. I would assume it’s not bad news if Mallory called me, instead of Max calling you.”
“You may be right about that. Could be due to the issues at Blue Moon as well. Okay family, I guess we all need to be prepared. I’ll call Sasha and Andy to let them know.”
“I’m going to go see Macy. I promise to meet you at the packhouse for lunch. I… I need to talk to her about all this, help make sense of it.”
“As long as you’re in the dining hall at noon. Tell Macy we said hi.”
I give her a hug and my father a kiss on the cheek before I grab my things and head out towards Macy, making sure to bring the birth certificate and blood test results with me so she can’t call me a liar. Not that she would. I sent her a text asking her to meet me at the café and make my way.
