Lilly POV
My mother is pacing back and forth in the living room. Every so often she stops and stares at me, opens her mouth like she’s ready to talk before she closes it and starts to pace again. It’s been fifteen minutes now.
“Linda, honey. Stop pacing and tell her what you want to tell her.” My father says to her.
“You could help you know. It’s not like you don’t know.”
“I’m against it.”
“She needs to know Jerry.”
“I disagree. As far as I’m concerned, she’s, my pup.”
Wait, what did he say? My head whips to the side and I stare at my father.
“Dad? What do you mean?”
My father’s eyes open in shock and he chokes on his drink. He’s just realized what he said and panic crosses his face quickly before he masks his expression and pulls himself together.
My mother lets out a sigh and sits across from me.
“You’re adopted.”
Bomb and jaw dropped.
“What? No, that’s not true, that can’t be true! Mom, I look just like you.”
“Your birth mother was my twin sister, Rachel. She and your birth father are from a… different type of pack. There was, well, an incident when you were just a few weeks old. They… they were both killed. We heard the news and grieved all three of you, assuming you were among the dead. Three days later there was a knock at our door. Your mother’s handmaiden managed to get you out and bring you to me.
Andy had just been born a few months before you, I had no idea how we would do it at the time, with two infants but I just knew I couldn’t let you grow up without us in your life. So, we took you in and we raised you as our own with Alpha Max’s permission. We-we wanted to tell you so many times, but we couldn’t. We promised we would protect you.”
Tears threatened to spill at this news. My parents weren’t my parents, not by birth anyway. My siblings were not my siblings. This pack is not my birth pack. Yes, they’re family but they’re my aunt, uncle and cousins, not my parents…not my siblings. As I’m letting all this sink in, my mother clears her throat.
“There’s, there’s more,” she pauses, “You’re not a full werewolf. You’re a hybrid; more importantly, you’re of royal blood. We think that’s why you don’t have a wolf yet, why…why you may never have one.” There it is. The biggest truth bomb of my entire life up to this point. I’m an adopted royal hybrid…
‘Maeve.’
‘Lillianna.’
‘You…you kept this from me?’
‘Goddesses orders. I didn’t have a choice. I’m so sorry, Lilly.’ She replies bowing her head and tucking her tail.
“Illy, please say something.” My mother pleads.
“What… what else am I?”
She stands up and crosses the room to sit next to me and takes my hands.
“Your mother, my sister, was a full-blooded werewolf like me, from a pure Alpha bloodline, one that is nearly extinct. Her fated mate, your father, was,” she pauses to look at my father, he just looks away, clearly not wanting to be a part of this.
My mother sighs, “Your father was the Fae Prince, Malik.”
Fae prince? Fae? Fairy!? Me?!
“Fairy Prince!?”
I shoot up to my feet and start to pace. All of this is too much.
“I… I need a minute.” I rush out as I bolt for the stairs.
My parents call after me, but I ignore them completely. I race to my room, slam the door shut, and lock it. I press my back against the door as my chest heaves up and down. I slide to the floor as I try to control my breathing.
‘Look at your brand.’
Holding my wrist up to my face I see the stars glowing, the blue star shining, and the diamond is starting to shimmer. The stars are now filled with silver and above the crescent moon is a new addition to the piece, a silver crown, it too is shimmering.
‘Look at your eyes.’
I stand up and walk to my vanity mirror. My eyes… are glowing! They’re the most brilliant electric blue color and I am in shock.
‘It’s complete.’ Maeve says. ‘Our shift will be soon, your body is ready.’
I sat against my door for a while. My brother has come knocking twice, my mother once. I told them both I just need some time. I decided to crawl into bed and get some sleep. My body and mind are completely exhausted from today’s events. At least my wrist should stop burning like mad now that Maeve says the change is complete.
As I drifted off to sleep, a pair of golden eyes stared at me in through the darkness. I’m blanketed in sea of comfort before I finally drift off.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I look around to realize I’m back in the dark forest once again, on a path that I’m all too familiar with. I follow it for a while before I come out into the clearing I know so well. I haven’t been back there, while awake, in a few weeks, I should take Maeve on a run here once we shift.
I notice a scent here that wasn’t there before. Coffee and chocolate, with a slight hint of citrus hanging in the air. I can’t help but inhale deeply. Maeve perks up at the scent.
‘That smell’s delicious. What is that? Oh, My Goddess! Lilly, that smell is so good!’
‘You know we’re in a dream, right? You can… materialize yourself.’ I tell her rolling my eyes.
‘Oh yeah! Sorry, I was getting cozy in your noggin.’
In an instant Maeve is standing beside me. I run my fingers through her fur and nuzzle my nose into her neck. She pushes her snout against me and licks my face.
“Good thing that won’t last for long.” A familiar voice says from behind us.
As we turn around, we see the Moon Goddess and the other woman who was here before. I never really got to speak to her. We bow in respect, and she waves us off, that it’s not necessary.
The woman with Selene takes a step forward and examines me. She takes so long; I start to feel uncomfortable.
“Mab, would you relax a little bit.”
“I’m sorry Sel, I just wanted to take a look at what my family has produced with your family.”
Everything clicks and instantly I’m bowing once again. This is the Queen of the Fairy’s. The Queen Mab. The stories about her are absolute legends. She’s thousands of years old and doesn’t look a day over 30. I feel soft fingers cup my chin and urge me to look up.
“None of that here. No Fae, from my blood, should ever feel the need for such trivial nuances in my presence. Please,” Queen Mab says gently.
“You’re here because you know who you are now. And there are some things we must discuss. To prepare you for your awakening.” She explains.
“My awakening? F-Family?”
Queen Mab reaches a hand forward and gently strokes my cheek. I lean into her touch; it feels like home.
“I may be thousands of years old, but over the years I have had a handful of my own children. Your father was one of my sons. Lilly, you are my granddaughter.”
I stared in shock. The Queen of all the fairy’s is my grandmother. My grandmother is the most powerful Fae in all existence, equal in strength and power to the Moon Goddess.
“You have much to learn about who you are and where you come from. The purpose of this visit is to prepare your mind and body for the power you will inherit at the time of your first shift. You see, we have never had a pairing with the Fae and a werewolf, no shifters of any kind, not true, never chosen. Your mother being who she was and your father being who he was, well, we don’t exactly know the extent of the power you will hold, only what was foretold. It could be infinite, and it could be dangerous.
At the stroke of midnight, signaling the start of your day of birth, you will shift. Your Fae side will fully awaken at the same time. Your body has already begun to prepare your human self for this shift. Because both sides will awaken at the same time, you will need to learn how to control and harness both sides at the same time. This will be a challenge, trust your instincts and your wolf, she has already been prepared.”
Taking a breath, Mab continues to unload more information.
“Your emotions will be tied directly to your gifts, if your emotions are out of control your power will cause chaos and destruction. You must learn to control them. What you can do remains to be seen. The power you hold, however, we know will be the infinite.
Within one week of your shift, return to this clearing in the waking world. You will finally be able to enter and begin training with your Fae abilities. The Realm will always be available for you to access through the Moors. There is one other portal within the territories, the location of which you will learn during your initial training. Only you, your mate and any offspring you may have will be able to access this Realm.”
Mab places a hand on my shoulder to reassure me and Selene steps forward to hold my hand.
“Your true mate will come, and he will help you harness your gifts. Don’t you worry. Did you catch the hint when you arrived?” Selene asked with a wink.
I try to think about what she could mean when I start to feel tingly.
“Oh, darn. Times up.”
“No not yet, what if I have questions!”
“Maeve will be able to answer all your questions now, and you will see me again child.” Selene says as the world fades to black.
