Chapter 17

Lucian POV

We are ten minutes outside of Crescent Moon and Axle is back to his annoying, driving me mad, self. We had to stop half an hour ago and switch drivers. I couldn’t concentrate on the road, the closer we got, so Derek took over the last leg.

‘Axle. Please. Please just calm down. I’ll go for a run tonight, you can blow off some steam, but we have to do our research first and then we’ll figure out what we’re going to do here.’

‘Fine.’ He says with a huff. ‘But I want her soon. She’s mine and I want her. I need mate.’

‘Even if we find her today, you have to wait until she shifts AND accepts us. You will not force anything!”

“Are you good, boss?” Derek says, in true Beta mode, as we make the final turn onto a well-kept gravel road. A group of twenty crescent moon wolves emerge from the trees and flank our vehicles to usher us into the pack. Pleasant howls ring through the air, signaling that we have arrived at pack lands.

“Axle has been driving me mad since we left the diner. He knows we’re close. We know she’s close. We know what she smells like. But we are missing some crucial information. He’s getting impatient as f**k. I will not ruin her discovering me as her mate. I want her to figure it out for herself. But man…he’s going to make it hard.”

The forest opens up slightly to a set of large golden gates, with two wolves howling at the moon resting on top, start to open, allowing us entrance without the need to stop. Five minutes. We’ll be there in five minutes.

“Take a deep breath. Here’s some water.”

I chug half of the bottle in one go and focus my breathing. I feel back in control as we approach the packhouse and that’s when everything turns to s**t internally.

The Alpha, Beta, and Gamma families, as tradition, are standing out front waiting for our arrival. Standing among them is her… my mate.

“Fuck.”

“What?”

Derek starts to look around, his eyes widen once he sees the families standing outside the packhouse.

“Holy s**t! That’s her!”

‘She’s beautiful.’ Axle purrs.

“Yeah, she is.” I say aloud.

“This… this is going to be hilarious!”

Derek parks the car and lets out a loud laugh before he opens the door and gets out.

My heart jumps into my throat and I finish the rest of my water as Derek rounds the car to open my door for me. I wipe my sweaty hands on my pants quickly and straighten my fitted black t-shirt before getting out of the car. Masking my face before I step out myself.

The Alpha approaches me with a smile, his Luna, a beautiful older she-wolf, by his side. They are a little younger than my father would have been, and he looks oddly familiar to me. His hand was outstretched for a handshake. Finally, someone who doesn’t feel compelled to bow. I shook the Alphas hand and studied his face.

“Lycan King, Lucian Knight. It’s good to see you, again. Though, I’m not sure if you remember me. I knew you when you were much younger.” The Alpha says, patting my shoulders like we’re old friends.

I study his face for a moment as well as his Luna. It takes a moment before realization dawns on me, it was his smile that finally put the pieces together.

“No…. Maximus!” I say, remembering my father’s old friend. “How are you?”

“I’m well, I was sorry to hear about your father. I apologize we couldn’t attend his last rights and funeral; we had just discovered a large group of lone species traveling together, a number of which were nearly feral. As much as I wished we could have made it, we just couldn’t leave at a time like that, we had to take care of those we could before they put the pack in danger. I do hope our sympathies were received? It was all we could do at the time.”

“No, I completely understand. Your pack comes first. My mother loved the arrangement, she had it preserved. Luna Mallory, I hope you are doing well? It’s been so long.”

I turned my attention to the Luna and reach my hand to shake hers. She smiles and shakes my hand back, her hands are soft and delicate, reminding me of my mothers.

“We are well. How is your mother doing these days?” She asks me.

“Father’s passing was hard but she pulled through and now she keeps herself busy with various projects and charities back home.” I tell her.

“I’ll have to give her a call. I miss her. It’s just been so busy around here the last few months.”

“She would love that, I’m sure.”

“Come, let me introduce you to my Beta and Gamma Families. Then we’ll get you settled in your rooms, and we can commence the tour.” Maximus gains my attention again.

“Max, this is my Beta, Derek. He will be helping with your trainings while we’re here and pinpoint any potential recruits for the royal guard.”

“Pleasure to meet you Beta Derek”

They shake hands as we approach the Beta Family. The Beta female, I learned, I’ll meet tomorrow as she was called away to help family at a different pack. The Beta, Jefferson, seems to have his head on straight, he has one daughter and one son, who I noticed has glanced at my mate twice now. The look in his eyes was a little concerning.

We exchanged pleasantries and I introduced Derek since he’ll be working with this man and the Gamma a lot over the next week. Alpha Max moves to the Gamma family and begins the introductions.

“Lucian, this is my Gamma, and his lovely mate, Jerry and Linda Mason. This is Andy, the Gamma heir, and their eldest. Lillianna, their middle daughter and a future pack healer, and their youngest daughter, future warrior Sasha.”

The sound of her name makes Axle purr.

‘Lillianna. Perfect.’

I shook hands with Linda and Jerry. Jerry’s handshake is firm and confident, as it should be, he’s my future father-in-law after all. As I shake Linda’s hand, a feeling of familiarity fills me, but I brush it off as her being my future mother-in-law. I introduced my Beta to Jerry and Andy since he’s the Gamma in training. I shake hands with Andy and then move onto Lillianna. The moment I’m in front of her, I’m overpowered by her scent. Strawberries with undertones of honey and coffee, but I don’t detect the mint coming off every other member in the pack, interesting.

I stand before her and reach out my hand. I have no idea if I’ll even be able to touch her. Given recent experiences, this might not go over well. Time slows as I watch her hand reach for mine. As soon as our skin touches light tingles cover the area where we touch. I hear a small gasp and she pulls her hand away quickly. She looks at her hand for a second before her eyes shoot up to meet mine.

I watch as her breath hitches in her throat and her eyes grow large. She felt it.

“Nice to meet you, Lillianna.” I said softly with a smile.

“Y-You as well, your majesty.”

Lillianna started to bow, and I gently placed my hands on her arms and pulled her to stand back up. Gently, I place a finger under her chin and pull her gaze back to me.

“Lucian, please.”

She stares at me in shock and nods, I don’t have to look around to figure out everyone around us likely has the same look on their face but for different reasons. As much as I don’t want to, I move on to her younger sister.

Reaching my hand out to shake hers, I tell my future sister-in-law that I’m very happy to meet her and look forward to seeing her on the training field. My mate’s mother suggested Lilly go find someone named Macy. I’m not thrilled but we have a schedule to keep to. I will find time to get to know my mate, to be near.

Once introductions are made, we are led inside where everyone is shown their rooms. As the Royal Guest, we have an entire section of the fourth floor to ourselves, just Derek and I. It’s like a large penthouse split between the Alpha family and us with private entrances, for each side. Not too bad. The warriors are doubled up and given nice guest rooms on the 2nd floor, reserved for long-term guests. I don’t know if I’d quantify long, with one week but who am I to argue.

I put my clothes away and decided I needed to take a shower and take care of the growing problem in between my legs. She smelled better face to face than I could have imagined. Her eyes pulled me in, I could have drowned in them. Hell, I might drown in them. Her skin, even from the brief contact, was so soft and warm. Hair, just begging for me to run my fingers through it; the same silver color as Maeves wolf in my dream.

After my shower and quite a few releases, I dressed and met up with Derek in the half kitchen in our suite.

“So, who is taken care of.”

I just laugh and rub my hands over my face.

“Let’s get this tour done before we figure out the next steps. Also, find out why the Beta’s son couldn’t keep his eyes off Lillianna.”

“What did the Moon Goddess say again?”

“That she would shift when she met me. Clearly, that didn’t happen, but that means it will happen soon.”

We left the suite and made our way down to the first floor. Jerry, Linda, Alpha Max and Luna Mallory are waiting for us once we reach the bottom of the stairs.
