“You ready to go?” Devon said as he slid his hand over her shoulder. She pulled in a breath where she was lying on the sofa in her sister’s townhouse. She must have drifted off, and she blinked, feeling the heaviness of sleep. She heard voices, seeing the daylight shine through, and knew they were going home. Her sister was gone into witness protection. Devon was leaning over her, sitting at the edge of the sofa. She’d never felt this exhausted. “Yeah,” she said. “I’m ready to go home and sleep in our bed.” Devon didn’t smile. His chestnut eyes seemed to be carrying the weight for both of them. “Me too.
