DAMIAN
“Absolutely not.”
I stared at my grandfather, he looked entirely too pleased with himself. We were sitting in his private study, and I had spent the last ten minutes listening to the most ridiculous proposal of my life.
“You want me to marry her?”
Richard nodded. “Yes.”
“For two years?”
“Yes.”
“To save her father’s company?”
“Yes.”
I leaned back slowly.
“This is insane.”
Richard shrugged.
“You need a wife.”
“I need a solution.”
“This is the solution.”
“No.”
He smiled.
I hated that smile.
“You haven’t even met her.” He continued
“I don’t need to.”
Richard raised an eyebrow. “You don’t?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t marry strangers.”
His smile became suspiciously amused. “Interesting.”
“What?”
“Nothing.” He replied
I narrowed my eyes.
He was hiding something.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
“Nothing you need to know.”
“Grandfather.”
“Damian.”
I stared at him.
He stared back.
Finally, he sighed. “Tiffany Bennett is a good woman.”
“That doesn’t mean I should marry her.”
“She’s intelligent.”
“Still no.”
“Beautiful.”
I said nothing.
“Independent.”
“No.”
“Loyal.”
I looked at him. “Are you trying to sell me a wife or a house?”
Richard laughed. “You’re impossible.”
“So I’ve been told.”
He leaned forward. “There is another reason.”
I waited. “She reminds me of someone.”
“Who?”
“Her mother.” Richard replied
My expression changed. I knew almost nothing about Tiffany Bennett’s mother, but clearly Richard clearly did.
“What happened between you and her mother?” I asked
“That is a story for another day.”
I stood. “This marriage isn’t happening.”
Richard didn’t stop me, instead, he said calmly, “Meet her first.”
I paused. “Why?”
“Because I asked you to.”
“That isn’t a reason.” I continued
“It is when I’m your grandfather.”
I shook my head. “You’re unbelievable.”
“And yet you still love me.”
I sighed. “Unfortunately.”
He smiled. “Tomorrow afternoon. My office.”
“I have meetings.”
“Cancel them.”
“I won’t.”
“I already did.”
I turned around. “You what?”
Richard smiled innocently. “Family privilege.”
I stared at him, as he waved his hand.
“Go.” He said
I walked toward the door, just before I reached it, he called my name.
“Damian.”
I stopped. “What?”
“Don’t decide you hate her before you’ve met her.”
I gave him a dry look. “I don’t hate her.”
“Yet.”
I rolled my eyes and left, and the moment the door closed behind me, I pulled out my phone.
“Ethan.”
“Yes, sir?”
“Find everything you can about Tiffany Bennett.”
There was a brief pause.
“Everything?”
“Everything.”
“Personal?”
I hesitated.
Then I remembered Richard’s words. Independent, loyal, beautiful. I frowned, why was I even curious?
“Professional only.”
“Of course.”
I ended the call, then I walked toward the elevator. I had no idea why Richard seemed so confident about this, but I was about to find out, and somehow, I had the strange feeling that the woman I was supposed to marry would be anything but ordinary.
