Chapter 5

925 Words
Crystal awoke confused. The curtains were drawn but she could tell it was daylight outside. As awareness filled her, memories of what happened before she fell asleep came flooding in. She threw back the covers with a smile. She was free of Allen and had the next couple of days next door to the handsome owner of Cedar Lane. She didn’t care that she was broke with nowhere to go. She intended to become Mike’s employee and clothing suddenly didn’t matter as the realization that the staff wore uniforms sunk in. She studied her reflection in the mirror after she used the bathroom. The dark circles were better. Sleeping during the day sometimes messed her up but she’d slept great. An enormous weight had been lifted!! Need to get some weight off my fat ass, but I do wear it well. She knew she did. People had often told her she looked good for a bigger girl. Caleb told her she was built like their dad’s viking side of the family. She had dressed up like a Viking warrior the Halloween after learning that and had received several compliments. Her looks hadn’t hindered her dating life so much as trying to survive financially had. Crystal was also able to admit that she was drawn to the Viking type man—Mike’s type—and they weren’t in abundance. He didn’t wear a ring—she’d checked. That didn’t mean he wasn’t married, but she was hopeful. Stop! You just got your independence. Let’s try to make something of yourself first. She amused herself with self talk. She liked what she saw and looking never hurt anyone. Well, except for when Allen was around. Crystal was smart enough to know she’d clung to him because he’d been familiar to her. The red flags had been easy to dismiss. What’s this? She wondered, noticing a piece of folded paper on the floor by the door. She picked it up and carried it over to the small wooden table by the windows, drawing the lavender curtains open before unfolding it. I hope this finds you well rested. I regret to inform you that Mr. Ames ruined many items in your previous room with bleach. Including the items in the blue suitcase. When you are ready, please dial extension 15 and ask for Marissa. She has access to resources that can help you with clothing, cellular service and more. You’ll find a change of clothes and toiletries hanging from your door for now. Afterwards, you may ask for an employment application at the front desk. When it’s completed, return it there. If you need anything, you may reach me at extension 12 if you don’t see me out and about. Regards, Mike Wallace The doorknob was stiff from the heavy bag hanging on the other side. Her heart swelled a little at the kind gesture. She straightened the floral covers on the bed and dumped the bag out. There was the mini soaps she’d seen before, two pairs of flip flops, underwear—in assorted sizes—a pretty pale blue dress, some makeup samples and another note. Ms. Pierce—I’ve included an assortment since I don’t know your sizes. Flip flops won’t have to be perfect and the dress is an adjustable wrap version. Call me at extension 15 when you’re ready. Marissa Wallace Hmmm. Wallace. Probably Mike’s wife. Oh well. Half an hour later, Crystal dialed extension 15. ** Mike busied himself at the reception desk. As a hands on owner, none of his staff thought anything of it. He did, however. Crystal would have to walk right past him when she finally exited her room. Marissa was already in the parlor awaiting his guest. He was completely unprepared for the stunning vision she made in the blue dress. It cinched under her full breasts and hugged her generous hips, stopping just above her knees. His manhood stirred and he forced his eyes up to her face. Her blue eyes popped in that pale blue color. The sunlight cast red highlights on her brushed out hair. He forced himself to rise. “Good afternoon,” he managed. “Did you rest well?” He could tell she had, but it was a habit to ask. “I did! Thank you,” she smiled at him with glossy lips. “My sister is waiting in the parlor,” he pointed the way, noticing her slight reaction when he said sister. “I took the liberty of having lunch sent in.” Her smile widened before she turned towards the direction he was pointing. He watched her, noticing a little more sway in her hips than before. Her long, strong legs seemed to have her walking a little taller. He knew right then he would hire her. No matter what. He wanted to keep her close. “Oh!” He called. “I almost forgot—here’s the application.” She stared boldly with twinkling eyes as he crossed the foyer to hand it to her. This is new he thought. “I’ll be eagerly awaiting it,” he said huskier than he intended. “I’ll return it promptly,” she promised, her eyes never leaving his. “Thank you.” Unable to think of anything appropriate as her potential future employer to say, he surprised himself by winking at her and turning away. Calm down dude! After what she’s been through, you’ll frighten her! He headed straight to the bar for a good stiff drink.
