CASSANDRA.
“Did you enjoy riding him the whole night?” Dominic roared as the belt landed on her back for the second time. She didn’t answer, and she refused to scream despite the pain.
She had learned that defending herself would only lead her to more punishment. So she swallowed it all and refused to scream. Tears fell from her eyes as she clutched the small fabric that covered her breasts, terrified that the continued whipping would eventually rip it.
Her body jolted as he gave her another one. She kept swallowing the pain, but this time she couldn’t stop the sobs that escaped her throat.
“Enough, please…”
Dominic had never whipped her with more than two lashes. He never punished her twice in a week to allow her body to recuperate. But this was already her second punishment in just four days.
“Enough? If you had followed my instructions, you wouldn’t be receiving this!” He said it with so much anger in his voice, and her body began to shake as she braced for the next hit.
She could barely hold herself. She was curled on the ground, trying to make herself smaller, hoping he’ll miss her frame and hit the floor instead.
His hand raised, and her hands flew to her head to cover her face as her body continued to tremble in fear. But the whipping didn’t come.
Instead, a loud voice ripped through the air and echoed around them.
“If you hit her one more time, you will regret your actions!”
“Alpha Marcus..” Dominic acknowledged him, and she slowly opened her eyes, peeking through her arms crossed over her face.
“Who gave you the right to hurt her?” He asked in a cold voice as he strode to where her husband was standing.
“She… disobeyed me.”
“And?”
“I don’t like it when she doesn’t do what I asked her to do…”
“I don’t f*****g care! Apologize to her!”
Dominic shook his head as anger flashed on his face. “No! No!”
“I’m ordering you one more time, apologize to her!”
“Don’t treat her as if she’s anything special. I will never…” He was not able to finish his statement because Alpha Marcus’s hand had already moved and clutched the collar of his shirt. And before she could even let out a breath, he grabbed him and swung his body, hauling him until Dominic ended up flying, his body slamming against the wall at the far end of the corridor with a loud thud before he eventually fell onto the floor.
She gasped in shock and tried to move her body away, terrified his anger would fall on her. Her movement made Alpha Marcus’s attention shift back to her. He remained standing, towering over her as she lay on the ground. “What’s your name?”
“C..Cassandra.”
He then crouched and held her arm, but he touched the part that was painful, so she flinched.
“Dammit,” he murmured. “Go to your room and get yourself something to wear.”
She nodded and scampered to her feet. Her whole body was aching, but she did her best to move as fast as she could. She slipped inside her room and closed the door, but instead of rushing to get dressed, she placed her hands on her ears as she tried to block the noise from outside her room.
She could hear shouting and something or someone being slammed, and it terrified her. She wasn’t sure if she should be thankful that Alpha Marcus had interfered, because she knew whatever he had given Dominic, her husband, would give it back to her. And it would be way worse than that.
Tears fell from her eyes as she continued to tremble, but she stifled her cries. She didn’t want anyone to hear her. This was her fault. She shouldn’t have fallen asleep. She should have done what she was told to do.
The noise outside subsided, and it was only then that she moved and put on decent clothes. She wiped away her tears and began removing her makeup with wet wipes before applying loose powder to her face. She grabbed the lipstick that she had on her broken dresser and applied a thin layer on her lips before she smudged a bit on her cheeks. She stared at her pale reflection in her mirror. Despite the red coloring, she still looked like a ghost.
Why did her life come to this?
She wished her mother didn’t die. She wished her father hadn’t taken her under his roof. She wished she hadn’t met his family. Maybe she was better off alone.
But then, being alone didn’t necessarily mean she would have a better life. Because Dominic found her while she was alone. So maybe this was exactly what her life was meant to be. She could only catch glimpses of happiness but could not fully embrace it.
She swiped the tears about to fall from her eyes and puffed her chest.
She needed to come out of her room. The more she hid here, the more her husband would find a reason to beat her.
She also needed to find Alpha Marcus before he left. She wanted to thank him for saving her, even though she knew in reality what he did would only cause her more harm. Still, she wanted to see him.
After she downed a pain reliever tablet, she walked out of her room with her head held high. She was trying to act brave. But she was aware that no matter what face she showed the people in this house, they already knew the truth. She was merely a slave to her own husband and his mistresses.
She headed to the kitchen, ready to start the day by helping out with breakfast, when she was met by one of the helpers, who also seemed entitled. No one in this house valued her as the legal wife.
Because again, her own husband didn’t see her that way.
“You’re late. You’ve been sleeping so well while we are toiling hard here because we have a guest!” She snapped at her.
Cassandra swallowed but ignored her and walked past her.
“Hurry! Master Dominic wants this delivered to his office. He doesn’t like keeping the guest waiting.” She heard her say those words to someone.
She swiftly turned around and snatched the tray from her hands before she could give it to the woman she was talking to.
“I’ll take this,” she said with a firm voice.
She didn’t let go of the tray and glared at her. Cassandra returned the glare, which she had never done before, and kept her hold on the tray, making it tremble between them. She must have seen something in her eyes because she let go and stepped back.
Without any words, she turned, holding the tray, and walked out of the kitchen. She headed for Dominic’s office, continuing with her brave front.
She knew what could happen to her, but the urge to have a glimpse of Alpha Marcus was stronger. She had nothing to lose. She’d been suffering all her life, but at least she could make all the pain worth it.
