Holding her breath

527 Words
It was not long before the voices came close. From her hidden spot she could see boots with the distinctive spurs strike the road next to her, even the slavers boots were armed with wicked sharp spikes to add extra threat to their cruel kicks. she pressed herself further back into the narrow space between the cart and the ground. Before they could get close enough to hear her, she pulled herself up so she was on top of the axle of the art, pressed into the wood. Her arms screamed at the weight and her bare feet scrambled for purchase against the slick wood but desperation drove her upwards. She was sure her heartbeat would give her away as it pounded in her throat. From the other side of the carriage another set of boots descended, these stepped softly, right up the the carriage before stopping, only inches from where the slave girl hid. They were flanked by the iron boots of the palace guards. "Oi you there!"Roared the coarse voice of the salver, "You seen my girl run past here" His boots came stomping up close. A smooth and deep voice replied  "Are you addressing me?" The voice was pure icy steel and gave the slaver pause. As the man spoke she slipped against the wheel, her blood running cold as her chain hit gently against the iron. She held her breath and prayed that their voices would cover her slip.  "I had a runaway come by this way, woulda only been moments ago sir. You or your boys seen her?" The slaver growled back. "She escaped from the lineup behind ol Master Kerians back, and he's not happy about it." "I have not seen her. I've never heard of a salve escaping your line before." The voice was hard, and made her blood warm in fear, "What would you do to her when you get her back?"  "I'll rip her bleedin tongue out when I find her" He growled. Her blood was cold again, paralyzed under the cart. "She wont be telling the tale of her escape to noone but the devil." she could hear the grin in the evil mans voice.  "Its not my job to find her, its yours and if i were you I wouldn't be wasting my time on empty side streets where she could be seen a mile away, my betting is that she will have got as far away as possible from the market, on the busiest streets she could find." His voice was full of superiority, and the salver shuffled his feet nervous. "I duno sir, one of the merchants said she took off down a side street this type of way." The air seemed to get cold as the fancy boots took one step forward. "Are you saying I am lying" The voice was ice, and the salver stepped back, "No -no sir I-" as the spurs dragged backwards away from him. "Good then get out of my sight." He growled. He turned then and the carriage rocked as he and his guards alighted. The salvers hurried away as the wheels below her began to turn.
