Chapter 5

Chapter 5 I was unable to sleep. I felt uncomfortable in the bed. I was still weak from the kiss that I was forced to give. My lips were burning, my chest hurt, and each breath felt like glass scraping against my lungs. I lay on my back and counted the hums from the fluorescent lights. One. Two. Three. Whatever it takes to stop the whispers from the Council enforcers, "The last Luna-Maker." You are ours. I was so afraid, I wrapped a thin blanket around myself, but the cold penetrated deeper than the fabric could cover. The door creaked. I looked up. Damien was standing in the doorway holding a file folder and a paper cup in his left hand. His tie was missing, his shirt was wrinkled, and the sleeves were still rolled. His grey eyes were sharp, despite his appearance. The cup was still steaming when he placed it on the desk. Coffee. He dropped the file, and the pages began to spill. "Drink," he said. I did not move. His eyebrows arched. "It is not poison." I'm not thirsty." Liar. His tone was not harsh, but flat. I sucked, hateful that he had been right. I was trembling, cold, afraid, and hungry. But I did not touch the coffee. He sighed and pulled the chair in closer to me. He bent forward with his elbows on the floor. He said, "They called you something." "Luna-Maker. "What does it mean?" My chest tightened. Instead of looking at him, I turned to the wall. His voice was abrasive. "Don't fool me. "Not after what I've seen." I forced my mouth shut, pressing it so hard that it hurt. His gaze didn't soften. "That man became Alpha with one kiss. He lost control and got ripped apart. And you," His voice dipped lower. You nearly collapsed afterwards. Your lips are stained with blood. "Like it drained you." "I squeezed my eyelids shut. "You want me to protect you?" Now, his voice is quiet and deliberate. "Then, I need to know the truth." "What are you?" I opened my mouth. The confession burned in my throat for a few seconds. The words would not come. I shook the back of my head and whispered, "I cannot." "Cannot or won't?" Both. The silence was so long it hurt. Then .... The voice was harsh and smooth, and echoed like smoke under the door. "Well, well. "The last Luna-Maker." My blood froze. Damien jumped to his feet in a single fluid motion, gun drawn. A shape moved in the corner of the room where the shadows were thickest. He moved forward slowly as if he had the whole world to himself. Tall. Broad. His forehead was covered in dark hair that fell in jagged waves. His frame was covered in a coat of midnight-coloured fabric. His eyes were gold molten, glistening with the fire of an Alpha in full control. My lungs locked. My throat closed. "No," I said in a whisper. Kael? Kael Thorn replied, "Yes, little one." The wolf that had hunted down my mother. The one I wished was dead, but it wasn't. Every nerve screamed. Damien moved instantly and stepped between us with his gun steady. Kael turned to me and then looked at the gun. He didn't pretend to be scared. His grin deepened. Damien replied coldly, "Silver round." "Test me." Kael laughed, loud and low, with a rich sound that vibrated in my bones. "Brave. "I like him." His eyes flickered back at me. "But he does not know you, does he?" Not at all. "Not the way I do." My stomach churned. I screamed, "Stay Away!" Kael mocked my voice. "You are the key to all things. Your last member of the family. Your mother's last gift. You know how long it's taken me to finish the work she began?" I felt like I had been struck. In my mind, I saw the pale face of my mother, who was sweating. Her lips were trembling as she kissed the mouth of a wolf, and the light left her body as she fell to the floor. My knees were almost giving way as I gasped. Damien held me steady with his one hand and never let go of the gun. His voice sharpened. Kael's smile widened. "I did, of course. She refused to accept me. She thought she would be able to hide you." His gaze returned to me. "But you're here. "All grown up." Stronger. "My body shook with nausea. I whispered, "You'll NEVER touch me." Kael's smile deepened. "You're saying that now. You've wasted every kiss on fools. Betas. Strays. Soon, you'll understand. My lips are the only ones worth touching ...". His eyes glowed brighter. "...you are mine." Bile rose in my throat. Kael lifted his head and studied Damien amusingly. "Protective already, Detective? Careful. She's poison. Damien replied, "I'll gamble." Kael laughed softly and coldly. "We'll see." He moved backwards and into the shadows. His golden eyes were fixed on me right up until the very last second. Enjoy your pretend game, little one. "The Council may want you to be leashed, but not me" His voice slithered along my spine. "I want you to be mine." He then vanished. The shadows swallowed the man whole. Damien She was shaking so much that I thought she would collapse. Even after he had disappeared, I kept my eyes fixed on the corner and held steady with my gun. I felt my heart pound, but my grip did not falter. He wasn't playing games. She looked at him with such terror that it cut right through her mask. That was all I needed to know. He was more than a mere threat. He was the real threat. I slowly lowered the gun and turned to her. She was pale and trembling. Silver still shimmered faintly in her eye. Her lips parted, and she whispered words that just barely reached me. The words "the man who killed my mom" slammed in the room. They were heavier than a gun or a wolf. The storm was bigger than I had imagined.
