Chapter six

Since the gala , since she had shaken hands with her ex-husband ,she had been laying low. Because she already had something prepared for him. Nothing too big. Just something small enough to shake him a little… to make people start asking questions. And life had been smooth, as always. Calista leaned back in her office chair and slowly spun around once, letting herself relax for a second. Her office wasn’t flashy, but it screamed money. Floor-to-ceiling windows showed half the city skyline. The desk was sleek and black, with only a laptop, a glass of water, and a few neatly stacked files on top. Behind her, the Novaris Capital logo was mounted on the wall in silver lettering. Clean and confident. Just like her. A sudden knock interrupted her thoughts. “Come in,” she said calmly. The door opened, and her assistant walked in. It was a young woman in her mid-twenties, dressed neatly, posture straight. She gave a small bow of her head before walking closer to the desk. “I’ve done as you requested,” she said, her hands resting by her sides. A slow smile formed on Calista’s lips. “Thank you,” she replied softly. “You can leave now. If I need anything, I’ll call you.” The assistant nodded once more and quietly stepped out, closing the door behind her. Silence filled the room again. Calista turned her chair slightly toward her laptop. It was time. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard for a second before she let out a small breath. This wasn’t something huge. Not yet. Just a little surprise for him. She imagined his face when he saw it. The confusion. The irritation. The tiny crack in his perfect image. Her smile widened. “Let’s see how you handle this one, Caius,” she murmured under her breath. And with that, she clicked send. ... Elara couldn’t take the little child’s crying anymore. With a loud groan, she got up from the chair while little Damien continued crying nonstop. “Stop crying for f**k’s sake. I didn’t get married just to babysit a toddler,” she snapped angrily as she stomped off. “Where is she when I actually need her to take care of this crying human being?” she muttered while walking toward the stairs. She was honestly thinking of leaving him there to cry until he got tired. The nanny wasn’t around. She had gone out to get a few things and still wasn’t back. Maybe she needed two nannies instead of one. He was being pampered too much anyway. Maybe she should let him learn not to cry over everything. As she reached the top of the stairs, the front door suddenly opened. She froze. Caius walked in. What was he doing home so early in the afternoon? Something was wrong. She could tell just by looking at his face. She quickly turned and rushed back downstairs. Damien was still crying, but Caius didn’t even seem to notice. He stepped further into the house, his face tense and worried. “Why? What happened?” Elara asked as she walked up to him. Caius ran a hand through his hair, clearly frustrated. “Someone leaked information,” he said quietly. Her eyebrows frowned. “What do you mean leaked?” “There was an anonymous tip,” he replied. “Some internal documents were sent to the press. They’re saying we hid a product issue months ago.” Elara felt her stomach drop. “What kind of issue?” “It was small,” he said quickly. “A security flaw in one of our systems. We fixed it before it became serious. But now the media is acting like we tried to cover it up.” He let out a sharp breath. “The office is surrounded by reporters. Investors are calling. Social media is going crazy. They want answers and I wasn’t ready for this.” “So you came home?” she asked softly. “I needed to think,” he admitted. “I didn’t expect this to blow up so fast.” Damien’s crying echoed in the background, but neither of them reacted. Elara stepped closer and gently held his arm. “It’s going to be fine,” she said in a calm voice, like a wife should. “You’ve handled worse. You always do.” He looked at her, tired. “This is different,” he said. “If investors lose trust, it won’t just be noise online. It’ll affect the company.” She placed her hand on his chest gently. “Then you face it head on,” she told him. “Call a press conference. Act confident. If you look guilty, they’ll believe you are. But if you look calm, they’ll calm down too.” He stayed silent for a moment, thinking. “You’re right,” he said finally. She gave him a small supportive smile. “You built that company from nothing. One little rumor won’t destroy it.” He nodded slowly. But deep down, both of them felt it. This didn’t feel like a random rumor. It felt planned. How about you come and let me give you a little massage to soothe you?” she whispered, winking. Caius knew very well what she meant by “massage.” All his worried thoughts disappeared instantly. He smiled as Elara grabbed his tie firmly and pulled him closer, placing her lips softly on his and giving him a slow kiss of reassurance. They were suddenly interrupted by the loud cry of their toddler. Elara groaned against his lips and pulled back slowly, clearly annoyed by the interruption. She rolled her eyes but quickly fixed her expression. She walked toward the crying child because she didn’t want to look heartless, especially since Caius was there. She didn’t want him thinking she treated his son badly. She bent down and picked up Damien from where he sat on the floor. “Where’s his nanny?” Caius asked, walking toward them as they stood with their backs facing him. “I sent her to get something, and she’s still not back,” Elara replied, patting little Damien’s back gently, even though his tears were still rolling down heavily. “Why didn’t you send someone else? Now we can’t even have some alone time,” he said, stepping closer and giving her a small peck on the cheek. She giggled softly and turned to face him. “He’s stopped crying now. We could just go for a quick one,” she teased playfully. “I like that,” he replied. Without another word, she turned and placed the toddler carefully on the sofa. With quick steps, she walked towards him, placing a kiss unto his, this time it was fast and hungry as if she's been waiting for this. "I don't think we should be doing this in front of the small child" he said after pulling back to see the little guy on the couch. "Then let's finish it up in the bedroom, then"
