The thick silence that fell over the kitchen was almost comical. It was like everyone froze and waited for the other shoe to drop. A disbelieving, brief chuckle broke out of Talia’s mouth. Like she for a second thought, it could be a terrible joke, then somehow realized it wasn’t and sobered up just as fast as the shocked humor had left her lips. To the credit of those seated at the table, none dared to even crack a smile. Other than Abigail, who decided to hide her face behind her hand, the rest watched Talia with unguarded interest. They were waiting for her to react. Talia had to wonder if it was some form of test. If it was, what was the aim? Then she fixed her eyes on Edward.
