“Amber!” I called as I opened the door and ran out of the car to help her out.
I immediately told my assistant to take us back to the hospital. The hospital hallway felt like a tunnel, each step echoing in my ears as I walked away from the room.
The scene from earlier replayed in my head. Amber's sobs still reverberated in my mind, a haunting reminder of the destruction I had just caused.
I could barely process the news of her pregnancy. It felt like the universe was playing some cruel joke, revealing this twist at the exact moment I had decided to end things.
I placed her on the stretcher as the nurses rushed towards me and they immediately wheeled her away.
I paced up and down in front of the emergency room, my fingers shaking. Leaning against the cold wall, I closed my eyes, trying to collect my thoughts.
How could this have happened? Amber had been in a coma for one month, and before that, our relationship had been strained, to say the least. The idea that she was now carrying our child felt surreal.
Memories of our life together flashed before me: the early days of laughter and love, the gradual drift apart, the arguments, and the silent dinners.
I had thought the divorce was the right decision, a way to free both of us from the misery we had found ourselves in. But now, everything is different–She is pregnant for me.
My phone rang immediately. My eyes met the name written on the screen–Bianca, as I pulled it out of my pocket.
“Hello sweetheart,” She spoke through the phone.
I was quiet for a while, I didn't know what to say to her.
“Alex? Are you there?” She continued speaking.
“Hi Bianca, I'm at the hospital,” I said.
“It’s been over an hour since you left,” She started. “How long does it take to sign divorce papers?” She questioned, her tone becoming harsh.
“Amber lost her memory,” I hesitated before saying.“I need to give her time to recover her–”
“Alex, don't tell me you still have feelings for her?” She cut in.
I was silent.
Her words hung in the air. I don't know what to say. Do I still have feelings for Amber? Or am I just feeling remorseful for what I've done?
“Answer me, do you still love that b***h? Do you–”
“I don't know,” I found myself yelling at her.
For some weird reason, I couldn't figure out my feelings.
Immediately after she hung up, I noticed three men walking in my direction. All dressed in black suits and dark shades. The man in the middle appeared to be a familiar figure.
As the gap between us closes. His identity was laid before me–Eric Stone, the son heir to the Titans Enterprise Ltd and Amber's brother.
“Hello Alexander Blackwood,” His annoying voice rang in my ears.
“Eric, what gives you the audacity to call my name in full?” I questioned and my fist clenched beside me.
“What doesn't give me the audacity to call my in-law’s name in full?” He started. “Or can't I visit my sister?” He said sarcastically.
“You didn't visit her despite her being in a coma for months,” A smirk played at the side of my lips.“So don't act like you care, you prick.” I said and I saw the light in his eyes turn to darkness.
His fist clenched and he tried to attack me. He was immediately held back by his bodyguards.
“I am not here for a s**t chat,” He muttered angrily and walked past me.
Why is he here to see Amber all of a sudden? This is unlike him to care about his sister. There must be a reason behind his visit. I bet it wouldn't be a good one.
“Why are you here?” I asked as I walked hastily behind him.
“Why are you suddenly acting like a loving husband?” He asked.
He smirked at me. He knew about my crumbling marriage with Amber. I wanted to reply to him but his voice woke Amber from her sleep.
Her eyes opened slowly and drifted to me. She looked at her brother and then back at me in confusion. “Sister, how are you feeling?” He asked and moved closer to her.
She was silent for a moment. Her eyes darted to me, trying to confirm what the man had said. I nodded and she finally spoke up.
“I’m fine,” She muttered softly.“I guess.”
If I hadn't seen her talk to him this way I wouldn't have believed she had lost her memory. She normally lashes at her brother. They were never on good terms even before she got married to me and got disowned by her father.
Her family and mine are big-time business rivals. The most prominent and wealthiest family in the whole of the country. Our marriage to each other was never a peaceful one. We were both caught in a scandal four years ago.
In order to protect our respective family’s image, I was asked to marry her. It happened on the night when I was about to engage Bianca.
We met at a party. We were both drunk and ended up in thesame room. Then things kind of happened between us.The next morning I woke up with Amber on my bed. We decided to keep it a secret when the media picked it up.
I couldn't allow the scandal to ruin my well-kept reputation and cause my family losses. I couldn't afford to risk not being worthy to run the family business in the near future.
“Father said you should come home with me,” He said all of a sudden. “He misses you a lot.”
The doctor must have informed Eric about her condition. This was why he was pretending to be a caring person. He knew that Amber hated him so much. But why is he lying to her?
“Eric, get out,” I yelled at him.
“No, stay,” She said to him. “I will go with him.”
“You don't understand, he's lying to you.” I began.“You are the last person your father would ever talk about.” I said.
I saw the light in her eyes fade away. Now replaced by a sad and questioning stare.
“I’d advise you to stay out of this Alex,” Eric yelled. Pointing his index finger at me.“She is coming with me,”
“She is not,” I started.“Turn your back and leave this place at once.”
His face twisted with anger.
He grabbed her hands and tried to force her to come with him.
“Stop, let go of me” Was all she could mutter.
The distress in her eyes was unmistakable, and I felt anger surge through my veins. Without hesitation, I moved towards him. My heart pounded in my chest as I reached them, my hand closing around her brother's arm to pull him away from her.
"Let her go," I demanded, my voice steady but filled with rage.
He turned to me, his grip still tight on her, his eyes flashing with defiance. I didn't hesitate. I pried his hands off her and shoved him back. The shock on his face was brief before it was replaced with fury.
Before he could react, I slapped him hard across the face. The sound echoed through the room, a sharp contrast to the dull hum of the hospital.
"Get out," I said, my voice low and dangerous.
He glared at me, his cheek reddening where I'd struck him. "You're nothing but a failure," he spat, his voice venomous. “You brought nothing but disgrace to our family, amber.” He said.
He turned to me and continue to rant. “You couldn't even keep your marriage together, and now you think you are protecting her? She doesn't need you. She never did."
I felt the urge to punch his face until he bled out. But I held back.
He turned to her, his expression a mix of anger and disappointment. "You're making a mistake," he said to her, his voice softer but no less harsh. "You deserve better than him."
“You've done everything to protect this worthless marriage, amber” He began. “But pretending to lose your memory? That's just embarrassing.”
With that, he stormed out of the room, leaving a heavy silence in his wake.
I stood there, my breathing ragged, trying to process what had just happened. I turned to her, her eyes wide and filled with tears.
"It's okay," I said gently, reaching out to take her hand. "You're safe now.”
“Don’t touch me!” She yelled and threw my hand away.
Suddenly, the doctor walked in.
“I’m sorry to interrupt Mr Alex,” He started.“ There seems to be a misunderstanding, "he said.
“What type of misunderstanding?” I asked.
“Mrs Amber's pregnancy test results have proven that you're not the father,” He said.
His words echoed in my ears. I turned and looked at Amber in disbelief.
“The father of the child would be with us in a minute,” He added.
