WHEN THE DEAD COME KNOCKING CHAPTER EIGHTEEN — THE NAME THAT WAS STOLEN Mara couldn't move. The woman standing inside Door Eight looked exactly like her. Same eyes. Same face. Same scar near her eyebrow. But there was something different about her. She carried herself like someone who had spent years waiting for a single moment. And now that moment had arrived. Elena stood behind Mara, trembling. "Mara," she whispered. The woman smiled. "That's not her name." Mara slowly turned toward her mother. "What did you call me before?" Elena couldn't answer. The woman stepped out of Door Eight. "Ask her." Mara looked at Elena. "Tell me." Elena's eyes filled with tears. "I was afraid." "Of what?" "Of losing you." "You already lost me." "No." Elena shook her head. "I lost the girl you were supposed to be." Mara stared at her. The woman beside Door Eight spoke quietly. "Your mother didn't steal your name because she wanted to hurt you." "Then why?" "Because she believed a name could protect you." Mara looked at Elena. "Is that true?" Elena nodded. "When you were born, you weren't supposed to survive." Mara's expression changed. "What happened?" Elena looked toward the door. "Your sister was born first." "The original Mara?" "Yes." "But she was older than me." Elena shook her head. "No." Mara frowned. "They were born on the same night." Silence. Mara's heart began pounding. "Twins?" Elena nodded. "Two daughters." Mara stared at the woman. "You were my twin." The woman smiled sadly. "Yes." Mara couldn't speak. Elena continued. "You were both born during the longest storm Blackwood had ever seen." "The houses?" "They were already awake." Mara looked toward the underground passage. "What happened?" "Your sister was born first." Elena wiped her eyes. "Then you." She paused. "But something happened." "What?" "Your sister stopped breathing." Mara closed her eyes. "And I survived." "Yes." "Then why did you create all of this?" "Because your father refused to accept that she was gone." Mara looked toward the woman. Her twin. "The original." The woman shook her head. "That isn't my name." Mara stared. "What is your name?" The woman stepped closer. "That's what Door Eight wants you to discover." Mara looked at the door. A strange feeling came over her. She suddenly remembered something. A lullaby. A room. A candle. Her mother holding two babies. And a voice saying: "One name for two hearts." Mara opened her eyes. "What does that mean?" Elena whispered: "It was an old family belief." "What belief?" "That twins born under Blackwood could share a single memory." Mara looked at her twin. "So we shared one." "Yes." "And that's why I have her memories." Elena nodded. "But it wasn't enough." "What wasn't?" "Your sister's life." Mara's twin stepped forward. "Our father made a bargain." Mara felt cold. "With Abel." "Yes." "To bring you back." The twin nodded. "But he didn't understand what Abel wanted." "What did he want?" "Identity." Mara frowned. "Identity?" "Abel didn't want money." She looked toward the dark passage. "He wanted names." Mara remembered the Keeper's book. "He feeds on them." "Yes." Elena stepped forward. "When your father made the bargain, Abel demanded your sister's name." Mara stared. "And he gave it to him." "Not willingly." "Then how?" Elena looked at her. "He took it." The room seemed colder. "What happened next?" "Your sister returned." Mara looked at the woman. "But she wasn't completely herself." "No." "What was missing?" "Her name." The twin smiled. "Without my name, I couldn't remember who I was." Mara whispered: "So you became a copy." "No." The twin shook her head. "I became the first empty person." Mara's heart sank. "What does that mean?" "I had memories." She touched her chest. "I had feelings." She touched her face. "I had a body." Then she pointed toward herself. "But I had no identity." Mara finally understood. "And that's what Abel wanted." "Yes." "He wanted to learn whether a person could exist without a name." The twin nodded. "He succeeded." Mara looked at Elena. "And then you gave me her name." Elena closed her eyes. "I had no choice." "You always had a choice." "I was a mother." "That doesn't excuse it." "I know." The silence between them was painful. Mara looked at her twin. "What happens if I give the name back?" The woman answered: "I become whole." "And me?" "You become what you were before." Mara frowned. "What was I before?" The woman looked at her. "Nothing." Mara's heart sank. "Nothing?" "You were never supposed to exist separately." Mara shook her head. "I am real." "Yes." "Then I have a life." "Yes." "People love me." "Yes." "Then I'm not nothing." Her twin smiled. "That's why you're different from me." Mara stared. "You became your own person." "How?" "Because you remembered yourself." Mara looked at Door Eight. "Then why does it want my name?" "Because names give power." "To whom?" "To whoever speaks them." Mara suddenly understood. Abel wanted her to say her name. The twelfth house wanted her to say her name. The doors weren't simply testing her. They were preparing her. For something. Mara stepped toward Door Eight. "What happens if I don't give it?" "Then the doors remain open." "And the dead?" "They remain trapped." Mara looked at her twin. "Then what happens to you?" The woman smiled. "I remain incomplete." Mara's heart tightened. "You deserve your name." "So do you." "Then there must be another way." Her twin shook her head. "Maybe." Mara looked at Elena. "Mom." Elena looked up. "You said my name wasn't Mara." "I did." "What was it?" Elena hesitated. Then she whispered: "Amara." Mara felt something move inside her. Amara. The name echoed through the chamber. The black key suddenly glowed. The symbols on Door Eight began changing. Mara stared at the name. "Amara." Her twin closed her eyes. For the first time, she looked peaceful. "That's it." Mara looked at her. "Is that your name?" The woman nodded. "Yes." Mara stepped toward her. "Amara." The woman began glowing. The entire underground passage shook. Doors slammed. The voices of the dead became louder. Abel's voice echoed from somewhere far away. "No!" Mara looked toward the darkness. He had heard the name. Her twin reached for Mara's hand. "Don't let him take it." Mara grabbed her hand. "I won't." The black key broke in half. Mara gasped. The two pieces fell to the ground. One piece landed near her. The other near Amara. Amara looked down. "The key was never meant to open the doors." "What was it meant to do?" "Separate us." Mara stared. "Why?" "Because as long as we shared one name, Abel could control both of us." Mara picked up her half. "What happens now?" "We choose our own names." Mara looked at her. "Then you're Amara." The woman smiled. "And you?" Mara thought about everything. The child she had been. The memories she had inherited. The life she had built. The people she had loved. She looked at Elena. Then Samuel. Then the darkness. "My name is Mara." The moment she said it, every light in the chamber turned on. The dead stopped whispering. The doors stopped shaking. The black key disappeared. Amara's face filled with tears. "You chose yourself." Mara nodded. "I did." Then a terrible laugh echoed through the passage. Abel appeared at the far end. He looked furious. "You don't understand what you've done." Mara stood between him and Amara. "Stay away from her." "You have no idea what your name contains." "I don't care." "You should." He raised his hand. The doors opened. Figures emerged. But this time, they didn't walk toward Mara. They walked toward Abel. He stepped backward. "What are you doing?" The dead surrounded him. Samuel appeared among them. Then Clara. Then Mara's father. Then countless others. They weren't attacking. They were simply standing together. Remembered. Abel looked frightened. "No." Samuel spoke. "You don't own us anymore." Abel shook his head. "I gave you existence." Clara answered: "You gave us copies." Mara's father stepped forward. "And she gave us memory." Abel looked at Mara. "You." Mara said nothing. "You ruined everything." "No." Mara looked around. "They did it themselves." The dead began speaking. Not angrily. Not loudly. Together. We remember. Abel's form began fading. He tried to step backward. But there was nowhere to go. The Keeper appeared behind him. She held her black book. "You took my daughter." Abel looked at her. "She was mine." The Keeper shook her head. "No." She opened the book. "Her name was never yours." She tore out a page. The underground passage shook. Abel screamed. The page burst into light. His figure disappeared. The houses became silent. Mara stared. "Is he gone?" The Keeper looked at her. "No." Mara's stomach dropped. "Where is he?" The Keeper pointed toward Door Twelve. "Waiting." The door at the end of the passage opened. Beyond it was complete darkness. Mara looked at Amara. "That's where this ends." Amara nodded. "No." Mara looked at her. "That's where it begins." The Keeper stepped forward. "You have one choice left." "What choice?" "Walk into Door Twelve." Mara looked toward the darkness. "And if I don't?" "The houses will remain." "And if I do?" "You'll meet the first memory." Mara remembered the warnings. The stolen names. The false futures. The copies. The dead. The knocking. She took a breath. "Then let's finish this." Amara stepped beside her. Samuel joined them. The Keeper followed. Together, they walked toward Door Twelve. As Mara reached the threshold, she heard a familiar voice. Her own. But older. Colder. Waiting. "You finally remembered your name." Mara stepped inside. The door closed behind them. And for the first time since Blackwood Manor was built, every single house became completely silent. No knocking. No whispers. No footsteps. Only one final sound remained. A heartbeat. Thump. Thump. Thump. Then a voice whispered: "Now tell me who you really are." Mara looked into the darkness. And smiled. "I already did." END OF CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
