Lena was in her bed looking at the ceiling as she tried to occupy her mind. However, she kept on looking at the key card that was placed on the table next to her bed. It hadn’t been hard convincing Patrick to give it to her. She had not told him anything in particular other than the fact that she wanted the opportunity to see Logan if needed and that she wanted it to be a secret between the two of them since she feared that others would see her as a weak leader if they knew that she couldn’t keep herself together without seeing her cursed mate. Patrick had lifted an eyebrow as he watched her quizzically, but he hadn’t asked further questions. And now the key card was lying there on her bedside table, taunting her. She sighed as she turned her attention to the windows. It was still dark outside, but it couldn’t be long before the sun rose, and she knew that she would be surrounded almost immediately after it had.
After some time, Lena finally mustered up the courage to get out of bed and get dressed. She hadn’t really thought about her appearance for a while, yet now she couldn’t help going through multiple outfits as she wanted to look somewhat decent. After having changed for the fourth time she gave herself a grunt in the mirror. It’s not the clothes. You look hollow and you know why. The pang in her chest hurt as she thought about Logan. It physically pained her to be apart from him, and it could be seen on her body, skin, and face. And today… though the day had been a day of sorrow since her parents had died, she had still believed that it would be better now that she had something else to focus on, someone else to focus on. Lena took in a deep breath as she tried to calm herself down before she finally got herself together and left.
It was colder than it had been yet, and the falling dew didn’t help. She half ran as she tried to keep herself from not shivering. However, as she got to the entrance of the cells, another sort of shiver krept up on her. She quickly shook it off and put the key card on the scanner. As the door opened she swept inside. As she got inside the second compartment where the wolf-like creatures were, she was careful not to make a sound. Both of the creatures seemed to be sleeping and she didn’t want to wake them, but just as she had taken a step, the one closest to the door, the one that she once knew as Fenton, sprung up and started to bang wildly on the glass. The action startled Lena, but she quickly regained her senses as she rushed to the panel and pressed the button that would send out the wolfsbane into Fenton’s cell. She kept her eyes on Fenton as he slowly started to relax. Before long, he was sitting down on the floor, breathing hard.
“I’m sorry that you’re in this place. I'm sorry that you're going through this. You were never my friend, but this is not what I wanted for you. I hope you’ll forgive me if I ever free you from this state.”
The wolf-like creature made no indication to understand her, but it didn't matter 'cause Lena didn’t say it to him; she said it to herself more than anyone. She then kept her eyes on the other cell, but the other creature didn’t react as she passed by it and went to the last scanner and put the key card onto it.
Lena gently stepped inside as she held her breath. The lights were dim inside, but she could still see a figure sitting in a corner against the wall with his head leaning on the other wall. She hadn’t known what to expect to see, if Logan had changed since last she had seen him or if the days in a cell had made him thinner and greyer, but as she got closer she was still surprised. With his eyes closed and sitting the way he did, Logan looked just as peaceful and handsome as he had done whenever she had stolen a glance at him on one of the few nights they had spent together. The pain in her chest grew as she tried to relish in those memories while knowing that the man she was looking at now was nothing like the man she had touched those nights.
Lena made her way inside as she noticed the chair that she had sat on the last time she visited was placed at the same spot as she had put it. She sat down on it and leaned back as she just looked at the man, or the body of the man at least, that she loved. He didn’t move or anything for several minutes, and Lena soon just started to go into a trance as she watched him.
“You’ve come alone this time.”
Lena jolted a bit as she shook herself out of her trance-like state. She quickly made herself relax again as she watched Logan carefully. He still sat with closed eyes just as he had done since she had entered the room.
“Do you want to speak, or...?”
Lena looked at her hands for a while as she thought to herself.
“No, not really.”
Lena looked up again to see Logan open his eyes. His face didn’t change, but she could still see the thoughts churning in his head.
“Lurking in silence is not really a cute look, you know.”
Lena huffed.
“Yeah, well, at least I can see you while you are sitting behind tinted glass, so I don’t really give a f**k what you think right now.”
Logan raised an eyebrow as he turned his head to look in her direction.
“No need for the foul words and aggressive attitude, beautiful. It doesn’t suit you.”
Lena frowned, but she didn’t respond. A minute or two passed in silence before Logan spoke again.
“What time is it? The guard hasn’t been here yet, so it can’t be much.”
Lena took her time before she responded.
“Around half past six or so.”
Lena swallowed and her voice was thin as she answered him. A smirk formed on Logan’s mouth, and Lena could almost see the wickedness wake in his eyes.
“Aaah, but maybe I should ask what day it is instead.”
Lena ignored him as she changed the subject.
“Can I ask you something?”
Logan snickered as he leaned back again, taking his eyes away from her direction.
“I don’t know, Lena, can you?”
Lena ignored him once more.
“What is the endgame for you? You haven’t changed like the others and you don’t seem to be under the same power that they are. What do you expect to get if you ever get free?”
Logan didn’t as much as twitch as he closed his eyes again.
“I thought you didn’t want to talk?”
“And then I changed my mind. Now, are you going to answer me?”
Logan smacked his lips as he bobbed his head a little.
“Pleasure without shame." He then smiled. "It’s October sixteenth, isn’t it?”
Lena clenched her jaw as she kept silent, but the creepy smile on Logan’s mouth indicated that he knew he was right. He dryly laughed with a closed mouth as he continued.
“How sweet that you’ve chosen to share this special day with me. Sad, but sweet.”
Lena didn’t react for a while as she just watched him. The coldness that she had felt from him in the past was nothing compared to the coldness that he was giving off now. Suddenly, a bolt of energy rushed through her as she stood up and walked towards the panel and pushed the button that changed the tinted glass that shielded her from his gaze. His eyes quickly lifted to meet hers as she stepped close to the glass in a slow pace.
“That was a pathetic attempt, Logan. You can do better than that. Come on, hit me where it hurts.”
Logan squinted a bit as he got up. He then proceeded to do as Lena and slowly approached the glass as well.
“Oh that wasn’t an attempt, my love, that was just the truth. Besides, I’m not a man of words; I’m a man of action. If you want me to hit you where it hurts then why don’t you get me out of here? I’ll really show you what I’m made of if you let me out.”
Logan’s eyes grew darker than Lena had ever seen them before as he donned a wicked smirk. However, she still felt the energy inside her as she confidently responded.
“I will. Soon.”
She then pushed the button once more, turned on her heel, and walked out of there.
The sun had just risen when Lena stepped outside. Her body was shaking, but she felt more empowered than she had felt in days. She made her way through the field and got to the house in no time. She then looked at her phone to see a text from Jess which made her walk in another direction. She soon stepped into the hospital room where Cody was staying and had barely gotten in when Cody, Lucas, and Jess sprung up from behind the counter.
“SURPRISE!”
Lena acted shocked as she gave Jess a small wink.
“What is this?”
Cody ran up to her and engulfed her in a hug. Lena hugged him back as she stroked his hair.
“You little rascal. You are supposed to stay in bed.”
As Lena said it she hugged him even tighter and Cody giggled a bit, which made Lena feel warm with love. At least he still giggles.
“Sometimes things are worth a little hurt. Happy birthday, Lena.”
Lena smiled as she nuzzled closer to Cody.
“Thank you, Teddy.”
