The private elevator descended rapidly, but Elena barely noticed.
Her mind was trapped on the phone call.
Your father should have stayed dead.
She tightened her grip around the necklace hanging from her neck.
For twenty years, she had believed her father had abandoned her.
Now she wasn't sure what to believe anymore.
Adrian stood beside her, silent and tense.
"Where are we going?" Elena finally asked.
"Somewhere safe."
"You said that before."
"And I was wrong."
His answer frightened her more than she wanted to admit.
The elevator doors opened into the underground parking garage.
Two security men were already waiting beside a black SUV.
Adrian motioned for Elena to get inside.
She hesitated.
"Are you coming?"
He looked at her.
"Of course."
He got into the vehicle beside her.
The driver pulled away immediately.
Elena watched the city disappear through the tinted window.
"Tell me everything," she said.
Adrian remained silent.
"Please."
He looked at her.
"Your father worked for my family twenty-one years ago."
"What kind of work?"
"He was an accountant."
Elena frowned.
"An accountant?"
"Not an ordinary one. He handled confidential financial records."
"And he discovered something?"
"Yes."
"What?"
Adrian's expression darkened.
"Money was being moved through several companies owned by powerful people. Millions of dollars."
Elena's stomach tightened.
"Was your family involved?"
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
Finally, he said, "Someone in my family was."
Elena stared at him.
"Who?"
"My uncle."
The car suddenly slowed.
Adrian looked toward the driver.
"Why are we stopping?"
The driver didn't respond.
Adrian's hand immediately moved toward the weapon hidden beneath his jacket.
Elena's heart jumped.
"What is it?"
"Stay down."
The driver suddenly turned around.
It wasn't their driver.
A stranger was behind the wheel.
Adrian lunged forward, grabbing the steering wheel.
The SUV swerved violently.
Elena screamed.
The stranger pulled out a gun.
Adrian struck his arm.
The gun fell.
The vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier.
Everything went dark.
Elena woke to the sound of rain.
Her head throbbed.
She tried to move but felt something warm around her waist.
Adrian.
He was unconscious beside her.
"Adrian?"
No response.
She touched his face.
"Adrian, wake up."
His eyes opened slowly.
"Are you hurt?"
"I'm okay."
He looked around.
"We need to get out."
The stranger was gone.
The SUV's doors were damaged, but Adrian managed to force one open.
They climbed out into the rain.
"We can't stay here," Adrian said.
"Where are we?"
"About twenty minutes from the city."
"How do we get back?"
"We walk."
Elena looked at him.
"In this rain?"
"Unless you have another plan."
She almost laughed.
"You're unbelievable."
For the first time that night, Adrian smiled.
"You're still arguing with me. That's a good sign."
They started walking.
After nearly an hour, they reached an old farmhouse surrounded by trees.
Adrian knocked.
An elderly woman opened the door.
Her eyes widened when she saw him.
"Adrian?"
"Mrs. Hayes."
She looked at Elena.
Then back at him.
"Who is she?"
"She's Daniel's daughter."
The woman's face went pale.
"Daniel?"
Elena stepped forward.
"You knew my father?"
Mrs. Hayes stared at her for a long moment.
Then she opened the door wider.
"Come inside."
The house was warm and quiet.
Mrs. Hayes gave Elena dry clothes while Adrian checked the windows.
When Elena returned to the living room, the elderly woman was holding an old wooden box.
"This belonged to your father."
Elena froze.
"My father gave it to me?"
"No."
Mrs. Hayes shook her head.
"He gave it to me the night before he disappeared."
Elena slowly sat down.
"Why?"
"He told me that if anything happened to him, I should give it to his daughter when she was old enough to understand."
Elena looked at Adrian.
He already knew.
"You knew about this?"
"Yes."
Her eyes narrowed.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I didn't know where Mrs. Hayes was."
The woman placed the box on the table.
Elena opened it.
Inside was a small key.
A handwritten letter.
And another photograph.
Elena picked up the letter.
Her hands trembled as she unfolded it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Her father's.
My little Elena,
If you're reading this, then I failed to come home.
Her eyes filled with tears.
I need you to know one thing. I never left you willingly.
Elena covered her mouth.
Adrian looked away, giving her privacy.
She continued reading.
There are people who will tell you that I betrayed them. Do not believe them.
Trust the man who carries the Blackwood name.
Elena stopped.
She looked at Adrian.
He stared back at her.
"What does that mean?"
"I don't know."
She continued.
The necklace I gave you is not simply a necklace.
It contains the key to everything.
Elena immediately touched it.
Then came the final line.
And if Adrian Blackwood ever tells you to run, don't ask questions. Run.
Elena's eyes widened.
She slowly lowered the letter.
"Why would my father trust you?"
Adrian walked closer.
"Because I promised him I would protect you."
"From what?"
Before Adrian could answer, Mrs. Hayes suddenly gasped.
She was staring through the window.
"What is it?" Elena asked.
The elderly woman pointed toward the road.
A black car was parked in the darkness.
Adrian immediately moved Elena behind him.
"How did they find us?"
The headlights turned on.
Then another vehicle appeared.
And another.
Three cars surrounded the farmhouse.
Adrian's face became expressionless.
"They're here."
Elena's heart pounded.
"What do we do?"
Adrian looked at the back door.
"We leave through the forest."
A loud knock echoed through the house.
Then a man's voice called from outside.
"Adrian Blackwood."
Adrian froze.
The voice continued.
"You've been hiding her for long enough."
Elena's blood ran cold.
"Who is that?"
Adrian didn't answer.
The man outside laughed.
"Come out, Adrian."
A pause.
"Or we'll burn the house down."
Adrian looked at Elena.
"Stay behind me."
But before they could move, the front door exploded inward.
Men rushed into the house.
Adrian grabbed Elena's hand.
They ran.
Behind them, gunshots shattered the silence.
And somewhere in the darkness outside, the man who had been searching for Elena finally smiled.
Because he knew something Adrian didn't.
The necklace wasn't the only thing Elena's father had left behind.
There was another secret.
And it was already in his hands.
