Chapter 9: The Hidden Room

869 Words
Elena ran through the forest with Adrian pulling her behind him. Branches scratched against her arms, and wet leaves slipped beneath her shoes, but she refused to stop. Behind them, voices echoed through the trees. "They're getting closer!" Adrian glanced over his shoulder. "Keep moving." "I'm trying!" A gunshot cracked through the darkness. Elena flinched. Adrian immediately pulled her behind a large tree. "Are you hurt?" "No." He studied her face for a second before looking toward the direction of the farmhouse. "They won't follow us much farther." "How do you know?" "Because this forest has only one exit." Elena stared at him. "And you know where it is?" "I spent half my childhood here." He took her hand again. They continued through the darkness until they reached an old stone wall. Adrian pushed aside some vines. A narrow wooden door appeared. Elena stared. "What's that?" "An old entrance." "To where?" "My family's estate." Her eyes widened. "You said the estate was abandoned." "It is." He unlocked the door with a small key. They slipped inside. The passage was dark and narrow. Elena followed Adrian carefully. After several minutes, they reached a staircase. At the top was another door. Adrian pushed it open. They entered an old room covered in dust. Elena looked around. "What is this place?" "My grandfather's private study." She frowned. "Why would we come here?" "Because nobody knows about it." Adrian closed the door behind them. Elena noticed something on the wall. A large painting. She stepped closer. "Adrian." "What?" She pointed. "There." Behind the painting was a small metal box. Adrian removed it from the wall. His expression changed. "I've never seen this before." Elena touched the necklace. "Maybe it's connected." Adrian looked at her. "Your father said the necklace was a key." He examined the box. There was a tiny slot in the center. Elena removed the necklace. The pendant was shaped like a small silver teardrop. She pushed it into the slot. A click sounded. The box opened. Inside was a flash drive, several photographs, and a folded document. Adrian picked up the photographs. His face immediately went pale. Elena noticed. "What?" He handed one to her. It showed her father standing beside Adrian's uncle. Elena's eyes widened. "That's your uncle." "Yes." "And my father knew him." "Apparently." She looked at the second photograph. This time, her father was standing beside another man. Elena stared. "I know him." Adrian looked at her. "Who?" "My father's old friend." "Are you sure?" "Yes. I remember him from when I was little." Adrian took the photograph. His expression became darker. "That's impossible." "Why?" "Because that man died fifteen years ago." Elena's stomach dropped. "Then who is this?" Adrian didn't answer. A sound suddenly came from outside the room. Footsteps. They both froze. Someone was walking down the hallway. Adrian quickly switched off the light. Elena whispered, "Did they follow us?" "I don't know." The footsteps stopped outside the door. A shadow appeared beneath it. Elena held her breath. The door handle slowly moved. Adrian positioned himself beside the door. Suddenly— The door opened. Adrian grabbed the intruder and slammed him against the wall. But the man didn't fight. Instead, he whispered, "Don't hurt me." Adrian froze. Elena recognized the voice. It was Mrs. Hayes. "What are you doing here?" Adrian demanded. She looked frightened. "I came to warn you." "Warn us about what?" Mrs. Hayes looked at Elena. "Your father's secret has been discovered." Elena stepped forward. "By whom?" The old woman hesitated. Then she whispered, "By the man who killed your father." Elena's heart stopped. "He's alive?" Mrs. Hayes nodded. "And he's coming for you." Adrian's face hardened. "Who is he?" Mrs. Hayes looked at him. "Your uncle." Silence. Elena slowly turned toward Adrian. "Your uncle killed my father?" Adrian didn't respond. Mrs. Hayes shook her head. "Not exactly." Elena frowned. "What do you mean?" "Your father wasn't killed by Adrian's uncle." She looked toward the door. "He was betrayed by someone he trusted." "Who?" Mrs. Hayes opened her mouth. Before she could answer, the lights suddenly came on. A man's voice came from the hallway. "Mrs. Hayes." Everyone froze. The voice was calm. Almost amused. "You really should learn when to keep quiet." Adrian immediately pushed Elena behind him. A slow clap echoed through the hallway. Then a man stepped into view. Elena stared at him. Her breath caught. She knew that face. It was the man from her childhood memories. The man who had once held her father's hand. The man she believed had died fifteen years ago. He smiled. "Hello, Elena." She couldn't speak. Adrian stepped forward. "Who are you?" The man's smile widened. "You already know who I am." He looked directly at Elena. "I'm the reason your father never came home." Elena's hands began to tremble. Adrian's voice became cold. "What do you want?" The man pointed toward the flash drive. "That." Adrian tightened his grip around it. "You're not getting it." The man laughed softly. "Oh, Adrian." His eyes shifted toward Elena. "You still don't understand." He took one step forward. "The flash drive isn't the secret." Elena swallowed. "Then what is?" His smile disappeared. "You are."
