Chapter 14 - LUCY

922 Words
Flashback~~~ The summer sun cast a golden glow over the lake, and as I walked along the shore, I felt an overwhelming sense of joy bubbling inside me. It had been one of those perfect days filled with laughter, adventure, and the kind of memories that felt like they would last a lifetime. Ryan and I had explored hidden trails, shared stories, and taken way too many silly selfies. Every moment felt like pure magic. I was sitting by the porch of the guest house we rented for the summer. Sipping a cup of cold latte I made while I gaze into the horizon as the sun starts to set. Ryan called me over to the edge of the water. I could see the way the light danced in his eyes, but there was something different about him—an intensity that made my heart race with curiosity and excitement. I always thought that becoming a sophomore would change the way he treats me. We hang out like always, sometimes making out, but we never really define what we are. All I know is that he’s my best friend and my partner. During this trip, I couldn’t help but notice how anxious he seemed. He’s always fidgeting and looking at me as if he wants to tell me something. There’s something in his expression that makes me feel like something monumental is about to happen. He thinks I haven’t noticed, but when I’m not looking, I can tell he’s staring at me intently. When I catch him, he sometimes looks away, which is strange. “Lucy,” he said, motioning for me to come closer. I could feel my pulse quicken as I approached him, wondering what was on his mind. “What’s up?” I asked, playfully nudging him, feeling the anticipation build. He looked so handsome, standing there with that familiar, charming smile, but there was a seriousness in his demeanor that piqued my interest. He took a deep breath, and I caught a glimpse of vulnerability in his eyes. He pulled me close and hugged me from behind. Together, we gazed at the horizon stretching across the sea. “Remember that time we got lost on the road trip to the beach?” he started, and I couldn’t help but chuckle at the memory. How could I forget? That was one of those hilarious adventures we’d reminisce about for years to come. “Of course! How could I forget?” I laughed, shaking my head at the thought. “We drove in circles for hours!” I could feel him shaking with laughter. As I looked over my shoulder at him, I saw his expression soften. “Just like that journey, life with you has been unexpected but beautiful. You’ve helped me grow in ways I never imagined, and every moment with you feels like the best adventure.” My heart began to race as I recognized the weight of his words. I felt the air around us shift, creating a charged atmosphere that made it hard to breathe. He let me go, and I felt the warmth leave my body as he stepped away from me. Suddenly, I saw him kneeling, and in an instant, my world flipped on its axis. My hands flew to my mouth as realization dawned on me. “Ryan...” I gasped, my heart pounding in my chest. He pulled out a small velvet box, and I was too stunned to speak as he opened it, revealing a stunning ring that sparkled in the fading light. “Lucy, I know we’ve built this secret world where it’s just us,” he said, his voice steady but filled with emotion. “But I want to shout it from the rooftops. I want everyone to know how much you mean to me and how deeply I love you. Will you marry me?” Time felt like it stood still. The laughter of families in the distance and the gentle lapping of the water—all of it faded away. It was as if the world was watching this perfect moment unfold just for us. Tears welled in my eyes as emotion flooded me. “Yes! Yes, of course, I will!” I exclaimed, my voice a mix of disbelief and joy. He breathed a sigh of relief, the tension on his shoulders visibly relaxing as he absorbed my answer. He slipped the ring onto my finger, and I couldn’t stop smiling as the reality of his words sank in. We embraced, and I could feel the warmth of his love surrounding me. On that beautiful summer's evening, I knew we were stepping into a forever that felt vibrant and right. As we pulled apart, I looked down at the ring, unable to stop the tears of happiness. I laughed through them, overwhelmed by everything Ryan meant to me. He brushed a tear from my cheek and smiled, his eyes shining with love. “I can’t believe you planned this!” I said, still in disbelief. “I wanted it to be special, just like you,” he replied, and at that moment, everything felt complete. As we stood together, hand in hand, the sun dipping below the horizon, it felt like the beginning of a new adventure—one that we would embark on together, side by side. And despite all the uncertainty that lay ahead, I knew one thing for sure: with Ryan by my side, every moment would be an adventure worth taking.
