Chapter 2 - LUCY

781 Words
The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow across the campus as the first whispers of night crept into Meadowbrook University. The air was tinged with the scent of fallen leaves, and I could hear the distant sounds of laughter echoing from a nearby dorm, signaling the start of another weekend. I sat on my bed in the small dorm room I shared with Sarah, who happened to be away for the weekend—a rare occurrence I cherished. My laptop sat open in front of me, textbooks scattered haphazardly across the desk, but my focus was elsewhere. I absently doodled in my notebook, my mind preoccupied with thoughts of Ryan. Every moment we spent together deepened our connection, yet the weight of our secret marriage lingered like an invisible anchor. We’d chosen to keep it hidden, partly out of respect for his carefully constructed social status and partly because I feared the scrutiny that might come crashing down upon us. It often left me conflicted, torn between wanting to shout our love from the rooftops and the need to protect it from prying eyes. Just as I lost myself in thought, a soft knock echoed through the door. “Hey, Lu! You in there?” It was Ryan. “Yeah, come in!” I called, a smile breaking across my face as he opened the door and stepped inside, radiating his usual effortless charm. He wore a fitted T-shirt and jeans, and my heart fluttered because it was his easy confidence that made him stand out in any crowd. “Hey, I brought snacks!” he announced, producing a bag of chips and a couple of candy bars from behind his back as he plopped down onto my bed. “You’re the best!” I exclaimed, chuckling as he tossed me a bag of chips. We settled into our usual routine: snacking and studying while laughter filled the room. After a few minutes of casual chatter, I noticed a shift in his expression, something more serious. “Lucy, you’ve been a bit quiet lately. Everything okay?” His warm brown eyes searched for the truth, and I could feel the weight of his concern wrapping around me. Taking a deep breath, I nodded. “Yeah, just… thinking about everything, you know? Midterms are coming up, and it feels like there’s so much going on.” He didn’t buy it. Ryan leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a low whisper. “You sure it’s just midterms? I can tell when something’s bothering you.” He's on to me. Worry clouded his eyes. Debating whether to voice my feelings, I finally decided that hiding my thoughts felt wrong, especially when he was so attentive. “It's just... sometimes I get overwhelmed with our situation.” I hesitated, searching for the right words. “I love what we have, but I wish it didn’t have to be a secret all the time.” Ryan’s expression softened, and he gently squeezed my hand. “I know. I think about it a lot too.” His sincerity wrapped around me like a warm blanket. “But we made that choice for a reason, right? To protect what we have.” I looked into his eyes, feeling a mix of reassurance and yearning. “Yes, but what if it’s too much? What if it makes things harder for us in the long run?” A heavy silence enveloped us, laden with our unspoken fears. Ryan leaned back against my headboard, running his fingers through his hair. A sure sign of his anxiety. “I guess it’s just about finding the right balance. Everyone else sees me as this popular guy, but they don’t see the other side—the side that only you get to see.” My heart swelled at his admission. “And what side is that?” I asked, curiosity dancing in my eyes. He met my gaze, a soft smile playing at his lips. “The side that loves being around you. The one that finds comfort in our little world away from all the noise.” In that moment, warmth washed over me. “You have no idea how much that means to me.” I leaned in closer, the distance between us shrinking as the intimacy of the moment enveloped us. “I just want to make sure we’re okay.” Ryan nodded, our foreheads nearly touching. “We are. We’ll find a way through this. Besides, our secret makes us special, right? Just us against the world?” “Yeah, just us,” I whispered, my heart racing as I felt the electricity in the air.
