Chapter 4

425 Words
Just then, a maid led two police officers in, interrupting my thoughts. "Hello. We received a report that a young woman was being held against her will, so we're here to look into it." Chase frowned slightly. "Who made the report?" "A rideshare driver." I hurried to explain, "That's right, officers. I wanted to leave, but Chase Davis wouldn't let me. He's keeping me here against my will!" "Honey, I know you're angry, but the officers are busy. Stop making a scene." Chase wrapped an arm around my shoulders. His cold face instantly turned gentle and indulgent. That look of tenderness was something I had never seen from him before. Chase turned to the officers. "My wife is throwing a tantrum and trying to run away from home. The driver isn't at fault." I tried to break free from the hand pressing down on my shoulder, but his grip felt welded there. "No, I'm not his wife, officers..." Suddenly, he pressed down harder on my shoulder and kissed me fiercely. "No..." I struggled with all my strength, clawing at him with both hands, but he pinned me down so hard I couldn't move. Only after about a dozen seconds did he finally let me go. This was the first time he had ever kissed me of his own accord. My heart should have been racing like a startled deer, but I was unusually calm. Maybe if he had done this a few days earlier, I would have been overjoyed. Even the smallest kindness from him used to be enough to shake my heart. But now my heart was dead. I didn't care for it anymore. I was so angry my brows pulled tight together. "What exactly do you want? I don't love you anymore. I'm done with you. I am done! Do you hear me?" "Honey, don't be angry, okay?" "I won't cling to you ever again. Go be with Lucy. I'll make room for her. Just let me leave." Chase's face darkened. His icy gaze swept over the officers. "You heard her, just throwing a tantrum." After hearing that, the officers had nothing more to say. In fact, the younger officer was so frightened that the hand holding his notebook kept trembling. No matter how hard I denied my relationship with Chase or begged them to take me away, the officers still insisted it was a domestic dispute and not something they could handle. After all, anyone who could live in this wealthy district was no ordinary person. They didn't want to invite trouble.
