Having assumed the police would not be this persistent after six months, Adelaide really had taken no steps to ensure the local officers weren’t sniffing around. It was a rare and surprising oversight on her part, for a woman who seemed to think of everything. Dakota guessed that the added anxiety over escalating talisman use and her information network dwindling could be the root causes. A sign that her calm and sturdy foundation was cracking under the pressure.
As such, there was little she could say to chastise him. He’d done exactly as she directed. Though Adelaide tried anyway, her concerns were easily dismissed.
