They only stayed in Mississippi until the late summer, when the heat, humidity, and proximity to the ocean got to be too much to bear. They packed up what little they had and headed northwest to the small, secluded mining town of Somerset, Colorado. Buried in the Rocky Mountains, it took more than one attempt to locate. There were sixty or so houses, and damn near everyone in them either worked in the mine or had retired from it. In fact, the workforce was larger than the town. No amenities, restaurants, or even a school. Nothing for miles but roads, trees, a small river, and, of course, a giant coal mine. Even fully populated, the place felt like a ghost town.
