Chapter 4 Crumbling Empire

Twenty-four hours after the patent notice, Cross Group’s phones had not stopped ringing. Blackwood terminated first. Veridian followed, then Apex. Those were the three names our forecasts depended on. Each contract depended on C-System patents Cross Group no longer had permission to use. The sales floor emptied before lunch. Legal stayed and kept printing notices. Mia called it a public-relations problem until she had repeated the phrase enough times to believe it. By evening, she had a plan. She arrived in a tight knockoff designer dress. “We need to be seen, Julian. We’ll take our usual table at the Onyx Club and order champagne. Show them we’re fine.” I had spent the day answering lawyers. By evening, I was desperate enough to go with her. We did not make it past the velvet rope. Henri, the manager who had seated me dozens of times, met us at the entrance. “Mr. Cross. I’m afraid I cannot let you in this evening.” “What are you talking about, Henri?” Mia said. “We have a standing reservation.” Henri held up the card. “Your black card has been canceled, madam. The account is closed.” The card was tied to the corporate account. I had never seen it decline. “Run it again.” Henri checked his tablet. “The primary account holder terminated every associated card.” “I’m the primary account holder.” He turned the tablet so I could read it. “The card is registered to Evelyn Sterling. She closed the account this morning.” *Sterling.* The Swiss bank’s message came back to me: *E. Sterling.* I read Henri’s screen again, looking for another Evelyn. There was only one account holder. Mia demanded the card back. Two security guards stepped beside her and escorted us away while the queue watched. In the car, a text arrived from the board. They had called an emergency meeting and voted unanimously. I had forty-eight hours to find a major capital infusion. The amount was larger than every available credit line combined. After that, they would begin a hostile takeover and sell the company in pieces. The forty-eight-hour deadline blinked at the top of the message in bold. Months earlier, a rival CEO had complained to me about a failed deal after too much champagne. *“You can’t move in this city without the Sterling family’s approval. They own the banks, the tech, the goddamn air.”* The Sterlings kept out of the press. Their money did not. It sat behind banks and technology companies across the world, and no other lender could meet the board’s deadline. I called everyone who still answered. The family’s annual charity gala was being held that night at their private estate. Invitations were never sold through official channels. One holder was willing to give up his card for enough money. I sold my penthouse, the last major asset in my name. One hour before the event, the wire cleared and the invitation card was delivered to my car. Two wrought-iron gates opened onto the Sterling estate. Lights marked the long drive to a mansion with three occupied wings, and staff stood at every entrance. Cars stopped beneath a covered entrance where attendants knew each guest before opening the door. Mine required two checks of the invitation I had bought. Mia stared out the window and stopped offering advice. I checked the invitation again. It gave no name for the Sterling heir, only a foundation seal and our table number. Inside the ballroom, bankers and CEOs spoke in small groups under the chandeliers. I recognized people who had refused my calls that afternoon. Diamonds and old family signet rings flashed as they moved. I searched every group for the Sterling heir, but no one wore a name badge. The lights dimmed. An elderly butler stepped onto a small dais and tapped a crystal glass with a silver spoon. “Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention. It is my honor to present the chair of the Sterling Foundation and sole heir to the Sterling fortune.” I moved toward the staircase and rehearsed my request for the loan. The butler turned toward the landing. “Miss Evelyn Sterling.”
