Aria’s POV
“What prophecy are you talking about, Elder Marcus?” he asked with a slight smile. His voice was calm, yet I could feel the coldness radiating from it.
“The prophecy has been told for ages now,” Elder Marcus replied.
“Yet it has never been fulfilled, nor have there ever been signs of it coming to pass.”
“That doesn’t mean it should be ignored,” another Alpha spoke from behind.
The room fell strangely quiet.
Even the Alphas who had been arguing moments ago seemed unwilling to interrupt.
A strange tension settled over the chamber.
The kind that made my skin crawl.
Elder Marcus straightened in his seat before speaking again.
“The one with the Crescent Moon Bloodline shall usher in a new era.”
His voice echoed through the hall.
Every word sounded heavier than the last.
“Shall be the world’s Doom… and its Salvation.”
Silence followed.
Not a single person spoke.
Not a chair moved.
Not even a cough.
It felt as though everyone in the room had heard those words countless times before, yet none of them liked hearing them spoken aloud.
A chill ran through me.
Doom.
Salvation.
How could one person be both?
“And when last did you come across someone from the Crescent Bloodline?” the newcomer asked calmly.
The question lingered in the air.
No one answered.
Without waiting for Elder Marcus to respond, he turned toward me with a smile that sent an uncomfortable shiver down my spine.
“Hello, Miss. I’m Karl.”
He stretched out his hand for a handshake.
For the first time, I got a proper look at him.
He stood nearly as tall as Alpha Ronan, with dark messy curls that looked as though someone had run their fingers through them repeatedly. He wore loose black trousers and a grey shirt with the sleeves rolled halfway up his forearms, exposing strong veins and tanned skin.
There was nothing flashy about him.
Yet somehow he commanded attention the moment he entered a room.
I hesitated before stretching out my hand.
His grip was firm yet surprisingly gentle.
The moment our hands touched, a strange sensation rushed through me.
Not pain.
Not fear.
Something else.
Something I couldn’t explain.
“May I see the pendant?” he asked politely.
I nodded.
Karl released my hand and reached toward the pendant resting against my chest.
His fingers brushed lightly against my skin.
The contact was brief, but it still sent an unexpected jolt through me.
He lifted the pendant carefully and examined it.
“It’s beautiful,” he said quietly.
I stared at him.
Confused.
“Your hand…” I muttered.
“It didn’t burn.”
A small chuckle escaped him.
As though I had said something amusing.
Around us, however, nobody was laughing.
The Alphas and elders stared openly.
Some looked shocked.
Others looked doubtful.
Elder Marcus looked particularly disturbed.
“As you have all witnessed,” Alpha Ronan said calmly, “the pendant did not harm Karl.”
The room remained silent.
No one seemed to know what to make of it.
“The Council is dismissed. Return to your territories.”
Alpha Ronan’s voice left little room for argument.
“I think she should be placed under Council supervision,” Elder Marcus pressed.
The room immediately tensed again.
“I said she’s under my watch.”
“But”.
Alpha Ronan rose slowly to his feet.
The temperature in the chamber seemed to drop instantly.
“Are you suggesting I am incompetent?”
His eyes flashed red.
A heavy pressure rolled through the room.
It pressed against my skin like an invisible weight.
Several Alphas visibly stiffened.
Even I struggled to breathe beneath it.
“I didn’t mean that,” Elder Marcus replied through clenched teeth.
His face darkened, but he lowered his gaze.
“I think Alpha Ronan has a point,” another Alpha spoke up.
The elderly woman nodded in agreement.
“I agree as well,” Karl added calmly.
The discussion ended there.
One by one, the Alphas and elders began leaving the chamber.
Many cast lingering glances in my direction before disappearing through the doors.
Some looked curious.
Others fearful.
A few looked as though they wished I had never been found.
Elder Marcus paused before leaving.
His eyes settled on me.
Cold.
Unforgiving.
For a brief moment, I felt as though there was something deeper behind his hostility.
Not just fear.
Not just suspicion.
Hatred.
The kind of hatred that had existed long before I ever walked into this room.
Then he left.
The elderly woman approached me next.
She placed a black card into my hand.
Embossed on it was the symbol of a silver eagle with black wings.
“I’m Lady Morgan,” she said warmly.
“Feel free to contact me if you ever need help, child.”
There was something comforting about her presence.
Like speaking to a grandmother.
I wanted to refuse.
Truthfully, I wanted nothing to do with powerful people anymore.
On a normal day, I wouldn’t even dream of standing in the same room as them.
But I accepted the card anyway and tucked it away carefully.
“Thank you.”
She smiled softly before leaving.
Soon only three of us remained.
Alpha Ronan.
Karl.
And me.
“I’ll be staying in Nightfang for a while,” Karl said casually.
Then his gaze shifted toward Ronan.
“You wouldn’t mind having me around, would you?”
The air instantly became heavier.
For the first time, I saw something dangerous flicker behind Alpha Ronan’s eyes.
“Suit yourself.”
His voice was cold.
Yet his gaze never left Karl.
Not once.
And suddenly I had the unsettling feeling that these two men already knew each other.
Much better than they were pretending.
Neither looked surprised by the other’s presence.
Neither seemed pleased either.
I couldn’t explain it.
But something felt wrong.
Maybe it was just my imagination.
Or maybe the stress from everything that had happened was finally getting to me.
“Nice meeting you, Miss Aria.”
Karl smiled.
Perfect white teeth.
A faint smirk resting on his sharp features.
“I’ll be seeing you around.”
The words sounded innocent enough.
Yet somehow they felt like a promise.
Or perhaps a warning.
I couldn’t decide which.
Karl turned and walked away with the same confidence he had arrived with.
Soon the massive chamber was almost empty.
And once again, I was left alone with my thoughts.
Thoughts filled with unanswered questions.
The Crescent Bloodline.
The prophecy.
The pendant.
Karl.
And the growing feeling that my life had just changed forever.
