Chapter 6 > A Promise in the Dark 🌌

672 Words
The campground no longer felt welcoming. The laughter from the previous day had disappeared, replaced by hushed conversations and worried faces. News of Mark’s disappearance had spread to every camper. Some believed he had been attacked by a wild animal. Others weren’t so sure. Susan stood at the edge of the campsite, staring into the endless rows of pine trees. The forest was unnaturally still. No birds. No rustling leaves. Only silence. “You’ve been out here for a while.” She turned to see Caleb walking toward her. His hands were buried in the pockets of his hoodie. “I needed some air,” Susan replied. He nodded before standing beside her. For a few moments, neither of them spoke. “I’ve got a bad feeling,” Susan admitted. “About Mark?” She nodded. “And about this place.” Caleb looked into the forest. “We’ll leave as soon as everyone agrees.” “You promise?” He looked at her. “I promise.” Susan smiled softly. She reached for his hand, intertwining her fingers with his. Caleb gently squeezed her hand. The simple gesture warmed her heart. But inside… His guilt grew heavier. She trusted him completely. If only she knew what had happened at the river. ⸻ A few yards away… Mia watched them from beside her tent. Her eyes lingered on their joined hands. She folded her arms. She wasn’t ashamed of what had happened between her and Caleb. In fact… A part of her wished it had gone further. She convinced herself the kiss meant something. Maybe Caleb was just confused. Maybe Susan wasn’t the one he truly wanted. Those thoughts made her smile. ⸻ Later that afternoon, Ranger Daniel Hayes gathered every camper near the information board. His serious expression immediately caught everyone’s attention. “I need everyone to listen carefully.” The chatter stopped. “We’ve searched the nearby trails.” “We still haven’t found Mark.” A nervous murmur spread through the crowd. “Until further notice, no one is to leave the campground alone.” “If you need to use the restroom, collect firewood, or hike anywhere…” “Go in groups.” A father raised his hand. “Do you think an animal attacked him?” The ranger hesitated. “I don’t know.” “But whatever happened…” “…we’re treating this as a serious missing-person case.” Susan glanced at Caleb. Neither of them spoke. ⸻ As evening approached, dark clouds rolled across the sky. The wind grew colder. Harper adjusted the settings on her camera. “This place doesn’t even feel real anymore.” Ethan tried to joke. “Maybe tomorrow we’ll laugh about all this.” Nobody laughed. ⸻ Night arrived faster than expected. The campers gathered around a large communal fire. Children sat close to their parents. Flashlights rested beside every chair. The tension was impossible to ignore. Suddenly… The campground lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then everything went dark. Gasps echoed around the campsite. Only the orange glow of the campfire remained. Then… A long whistle drifted through the trees. Everyone froze. Another whistle answered from deeper in the woods. A child began to cry. Susan instinctively moved closer to Caleb. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “I’ve got you,” he whispered. She nodded, finding comfort in his embrace. Across the fire, Mia watched them. Her jaw clenched. She looked away before anyone noticed the hurt in her eyes. Then… A branch snapped. Everyone turned toward the tree line. For a split second… A tall hooded figure stood between two pine trees. Completely still. Watching. Someone screamed. The ranger shone his flashlight toward the trees. Nothing. The figure had vanished. Silence settled over Black Hollow once again. Hidden far beyond the reach of the campfire… The Unknown Stalker lowered his binoculars. A slow smile crept across his face beneath the mask. “They’re afraid now,” he whispered. “And fear…” “…makes people easier to break.”
