Rowan stood in the doorway, his broad shoulders filling the entrance to the balcony. The warm glow of the banquet hall spilled around him, casting long shadows across the stone floor. His silver eyes moved once.
From Kael...
To Serena...
Then back again.
Silence settled between the three of them. Kael was the first to speak.
"Your Majesty."
He inclined his head respectfully.
"I hope you don't mind. Lady Serena seemed overwhelmed by the court. I merely thought she might appreciate a quieter view."
Rowan's expression didn't change.
"Did she?"
Kael glanced at Serena.
"I believe so."
"I didn't ask you."
The words landed with quiet precision. Kael's smile faded just enough for Serena to notice.
"I see."
He took a respectful step backward.
"My apologies."
Without another word, he bowed once before walking past Rowan and disappearing into the hall. As he crossed the doorway, Rowan spoke without turning around.
"Lord Ashford."
Kael stopped.
"Be careful where your kindness is misunderstood."
A faint smile tugged at Kael's lips.
"I could offer Your Majesty the same advice."
The air froze. For a heartbeat, Serena thought Rowan might actually draw his sword. Instead...Kael continued walking. The doors closed behind him. Now only Rowan and Serena remained. The mountain wind swept across the balcony, carrying the scent of pine and rain. Serena looked at him cautiously.
"Rowan—"
"Come."
It wasn't loud. It wasn't angry. It was an order. She hesitated. His eyes met hers.
"Now."
Without waiting for her answer, Rowan turned and strode back into the castle. Serena followed. The banquet continued behind them as though nothing had happened. Nobles laughed. Goblets clinked. Servants moved between tables carrying silver trays. Not a single person dared look directly at the Alpha King as he passed. His footsteps echoed through the corridor. Serena struggled to keep pace.
"Rowan, please listen to me."
No response.
"You misunderstood what happened."
Still nothing. They reached a quiet wing of the castle rarely used by guests. Rowan pushed open a heavy oak door. Inside was an old council chamber. The long table had been cleared years ago, leaving only empty chairs and towering bookshelves coated in dust.
The moment Serena stepped inside... The door slammed shut behind her. The sound echoed through the room. She spun around.Rowan stood between her and the only exit. His face remained unreadable. That frightened her more than anger would have. She swallowed.
"I wasn't doing anything wrong."
He took one slow step toward her.
"Really?"
"It was just a conversation."
Another step.
"He welcomed me to the castle."
Another.
"He said everyone here smiles differently."
Rowan stopped only when there was barely an arm's length between them.
"And you smiled back."
Serena frowned.
"What?"
"You smiled."
"I was being polite."
"So was he."
She blinked.
"I don't understand why you're angry."
His laugh was quiet.
Cold.
"You don't?"
"No."
He closed the remaining distance in two strides. Before Serena could move, his hands landed on either side of her against the stone
wall. She gasped softly. She was trapped. His face was only inches away now. The warmth of his breath contrasted sharply with the ice in his eyes.
"You learn quickly."
Her heart pounded.
"What are you talking about?"
"You've been here less than a day."
His voice was calm.
"So tell me..."
"When did you decide Lord Ashford would be your first ally?"
Serena stared at him in disbelief.
"Ally?"
"You think I didn't notice?"
"I was trying to breathe."
"You were trying to build connections."
"No!"
Her voice rose for the first time.
"I didn't even know who he was until tonight!"
"He introduced himself."
"Like everyone else did!"
"He followed you."
"I didn't ask him to!"
"You didn't send him away either."
She looked at him, completely stunned.
"So now I'm guilty because I was polite?"
Rowan's jaw tightened.
"You are guilty because you carry the Ravenshade name."
The words struck harder than any slap could have. For several seconds... Neither of them spoke. Finally, Serena whispered,
"You hate me that much..."
"I hate what your family took from me."
"I didn't take anything."
"You carry their blood."
"I am not my father."
His eyes hardened.
"That remains to be seen."
Tears burned behind Serena's eyes, but she refused to let them fall.
"You've already judged me."
"Yes."
"You haven't even tried to know me."
"I don't intend to."
She drew a shaky breath.
"Then why accept the bond?"
The question hung heavily between them. For the first time... A flicker crossed Rowan's face. Gone almost instantly. His voice became even quieter.
"Because refusing the Moon Goddess would have weakened my kingdom."
He leaned closer.
"And because keeping you close is far more useful than letting you return to Ravenshade."
Serena felt the blood drain from her face.
"So that's all I am?"
"A reminder."
"A prisoner."
"A weapon."
Rowan didn't deny it.
Instead, he stepped back.
"The eastern guest chambers are now your quarters."
She stared at him.
"You will remain there for the next three days."
"What?"
"You will not leave without my permission."
"You can't imprison me!"
"I can."
"You have no right!"
"I am Alpha King."
The words echoed through the chamber like a sentence already passed. He walked to the door and pulled it open. Two guards immediately straightened outside.
"The Lady Serena is not to leave her chambers for three days."
The guards bowed.
"Yes, Your Majesty."
Serena looked from the guards back to Rowan.
"This is cruel."
He met her gaze without hesitation.
"No."
His voice was devoid of emotion.
"This..."
He paused.
"...is only the beginning."
Without another glance, Rowan turned and walked away. The sound of his footsteps faded down the corridor, leaving Serena standing motionless in the doorway as the guards silently escorted her toward the eastern wing of Shadowfang Castle.
