The game begins

Rena let herself into yet another of her safe houses throughout the city. She had never really used this house. It was the same design as the one Anton blew up, just a little smaller. It had fewer rooms then the other one. As she closed the door she let her bag slip off her shoulder. It thudded to the floor softly. She was exhausted, both physically and mentally. If she knew anything it was that Omri would arrive soon and she needed rest. Instead of going upstairs to the bedrooms she reached the couch and collapsed. She put her forehead on her hand and sighed. “What the hell am I thinking?” she muttered to herself. Only silence answered her. The cell phone that Keith had put in her bag began to ring. On the screen she saw Xander’s number. She couldn’t deal with him right now. So she silenced the phone and let it go to voicemail. A few moments later the phone indicated she had a voicemail. When she connected to the mailbox, she heard Xander’s voice. “You are not going to like this, but Adrian knows about our history. But that is not why I am calling; you’re family told me to inform you to stop being stubborn and let them help you. Do not make me come get you.” he threatened at the end of the message. She proceeded to delete it. She couldn’t go back until that bastard was dead. She sighed again and closed her eyes. Before she knew it she was slumped back on the couch fast asleep. She never even heard the door open and the footsteps that stopped at the end of the couch. When she woke it was midday. She sat up and looked around. Her body stiffening when she saw who sat across form her. “So, my pet, you awake at last.” she glared at him. “How the hell did you find me?” He tisked her. “I have always known where you have been, my pet. Since we are both here in the same room what shall we do now?” Rena glared at him. “Now you die Anton.” he had the balls to laugh at her. “No, my pet, its time for you to die. And I shall continue to kill you until I know how to rid myself of you completely.” It was her turn to laugh at him. If only he knew what she knew. “I Don’t think so.” was all she said. As she spoke she had reached under the couch and pulled out her sword. Silently thanking Keith for keeping each safe house ready for anything. She pointed the sword at his chest as she stood. He glanced at the sword then looked her square in the eyes. “Well, my pet, it has been fun.” She slowly shook her head. She had moved in front of Anton as he spoke. From somewhere behind her she heard movement. She concentrated on the movement and envisioned whoever it was flying backwards. The sound of a crash was satisfying. “Well done, my pet.” Anton stood and flicked an imaginary piece of lint off of his shoulder. Once on his feet, he pulled a rather impressive looking sword from his cane. “You have me at somewhat of a disadvantage.” Rena snorted in derision. “Disadvantage my ass.” he smiled smugly. “You’re right, of course. It’s such a pretty one at that. Shame that you have to die.” with that he swung his blade; barely missing a beat she moved hers to deflect it. As the blades clashed sparks flew. “Well done, my pet, well done.” They were standing a few feet apart. She swung her fist into his face. As her punch connected she felt a very satisfying crunch. “Don’t call me pet.” she ground out. He staggered backwards holding his face in his hand. She watched as his face became a vibrant shade of purple with his anger. “b***h!” he bellowed as he came forward. “Thank you.” her voice dripping with sarcasm. He lunged for her. Deflecting his move, she turned the upper half of her body to the left and brought her elbow down. This time connecting with the back of his head. Which sent Anton sprawling down on the floor. “Give up Anton, it’s the only option.” from the floor he answered. “Never.” When he tried to rise Rena brought her right foot back and struck his ribs as she brought it forward. “Now I know I shouldn’t kick a man while he is down. But I just can’t help myself.” she watched as he held the place where she kicked him he held his sword in the other hand. Using it to brace himself as he tried to get up. She went to kick him again when his hand shot out and caught the foot that bore all her weight. She went down hard feeling in her body rattle and she was dazed. “Now pet, it’s not nice to brag.” he spoke from above her. He grasped the sword in both hands and raised it over his head. Rena’s eyes widened. As he brought it down Rena barely rolled out of the way as he brought it down. The blade struck the floor and stuck in the floor boards. She raised herself unsteadily to her feet. “I’ll do whatever the hell I please.” with the said she commenced the beating of a lifetime. He somehow managed to get his sword unstuck from the floor. Blades clashed, blood flowed from wounds they inflicted on each other. “Give it up, pet. You cannot hold out much longer.” Anton spoke from the wall he used to hold himself up. Rena glared from the center of the room where she swayed. The living room was destroyed from the battle. “Nor can you.” He lunged from the wall, the force of his blow knocked the sword out of her hands. It skidded to a halt by the front door. Rena grabbed his blade in her bare hands causing her hands to bleed from the pressure she used to keep it from going into her body. She let go and swung her fist into his face which was already bruising from her assault on him. Anton staggered enough for Rena to be out of immediate harm. The force of her blow caused him to loosen his hold on his sword. She gave one good pull and his sword came free of his hands. She tossed his blade on the floor next to hers. She then took her fighting stance. Bracing most of her weight on her left foot. Anton had then regained his footing. But what she didn’t know was that he had pulled a gun out from behind his jacket. She only noticed it when it was pointing at her. “You think I would allow you to beat me?” Rena kept her face blank. “Yea I think you would.” she retorted. The way she said it angered him beyond the ass kicking he had just received. Without flinching he pulled the trigger. Before she could get out of the way the bullet slammed into her shoulder. The force knocked her backwards and she hit the floor. She screamed in pain as she covered the wound. She was barely aware that he was standing over her pointing the gun. She was trying to stay conscious when she heard one of his men speak. “Hey boss.” Anton glanced at the one that spoke. “What?” he snapped oblivious to what was happening behind him. Rena turned her head. In the doorway stood two very angry vampires and four very pissed off members of her family. She must have made a noise because Anton kicked her in the ribs. She saw stars from the force. She must have blacked out because when her vision came to she saw Anton between Xander and Adrian. Who was intent on killing him. “Rena?” it was Omri speaking from above her. She tried to smile but the pain was too much for her. “Don’t worry, we’re here. You are going to be alright.” she tried to speak but it came out as a whisper. “What did she say?” Omri leaned over her just to hear what she said. “Are you sure this is what you want?” he asked her. She licked her lips and nodded her head. “What does she want?” Adrian demanded. Omri stared at Rena. “Tell him.” she whispered before she passed out. “What is wrong with her?” Xander asked. “She is just unconscious but she is fine.” Omri moved her out of her face was bruising and covered in blood. “Well?” Adrian demanded, Omri looked up from Rena and glared at Anton. “Rip out his heart and burn it.” That seemed to appease both Adrian and Xander. “But not here in front of the girls. She said take him elsewhere to do it.” Adrian smiled. “With pleasure.” Xander said as they took a struggling Anton out of the house. While they were gone Omri and Riley tried to move Rena upstairs as gently as they could. Getting her into bed was easier than getting her up the stairs. As Omri was preparing to remove the bullet from her shoulder both Xander and Adrian returned. They stationed themselves at the door. Breanna and Kali had begun to set out the essential tools that they had around the house. Breanna commented under her breath how freaky it was that each house had their own turner kits. Omri smiled, Rena was nothing if not well prepared. Omri moved to the bedside and sat down. Rena opened her eyes and smiled faintly. “Hey,” which wasn’t over a whisper. “Hey yourself,” he whispered back as he took her hand. He watched as she closed her eyes and licked her lips. “I’m sorry.” she said emotionally. “For what?” he asked. “Everything that has happened. For not telling you about my past. And not allowing you to help. It is really difficult to trust people.” she wanted to go on but the pain prevented her. “Don’t worry about that, we’ll figure it out later. Right now let’s get the bullet out.” she nodded and motioned Riley over. “Riley, I need you to grab her shoulder and make sure you hold on. She is going to jerk around a lot in the beginning.” Rena opened her eyes to look at Omri, pain clouded the normally brilliant violet eyes. “After this Omri let’s visit my homeland.” she waited for him to agree. “Sounds like fun. Well, here goes. I am not going to lie this is going to hurt. Riley, put pressure on her shoulder and hold on, girls grab on to her legs. Sit on them if you have to, just make sure she doesn’t move around that much.” as he said that he picked up the tweezers, and swallowed hard. He lightly touched the entry hole and Rena screamed in agony. Omri held his breath as he searched for the bullet. He knew he found it because Rena’s entire body jerked and she screamed even louder. Her screams caused both Xander and Adrian to shudder. “Got it.” Omri said triumphantly, as he pulled out the bullet. He held it up and shook his head. Placing it and the tweezers on the night table. “You can let her go now, thank you. I’ll dress up the wound. She will be good as new by morning.” As he dressed the wound he noticed that Xander moved towards the bed and looked down at an unconscious Rena. “We should leave her rest.” Omri said as he finished dressing the wound. Xander moved away from the bed and followed the others out. The next morning Rena was up and about like Omri predicted. She was almost her normal self. Except for the twinge in her shoulder where the bullet had hit. Since Omri had promised her that they would visit her homeland, he had went ahead and made all the arrangements for them to visit Italy. With unlimited funds anything was possibly in such a short time. They had clothes to pack and a flight to catch. Passports were never a problem when you knew people who handled that kind of thing. Keith had five passports ready and waiting. Rena could hear the girls hollering back and forth making sure they had everything that they could possibly need for their trip. Rena smiled to herself. Home, she thought. She couldn’t wait to share with her family the place she had lived when she was younger. She had only been back once since everything she had been through in her life. Her father would be proud of her. For everything she had accomplished. She wished he could be here to share in this with her. “Rena, are you ready to go? The taxies will be here in about twenty minutes.” Kali spoke from behind her. Rena turned and looked at her. She had grown so much since being with her. She was more self-confident in everything she did and said. “Yes, I am ready to go.” with that said she picked up her purse and made her way to the living room. Everyone was there except Xander and Adrian. But the sun was up so they couldn’t come with them. Rena figured that it was best that they stayed behind. She had a lot to figure out concerning those two. Outside a car horn sounded the arrival of the taxies. The guys had made sure everything was ready to be taken outside. Cracking jokes about how much crap women needed for a simple vacation. Rena was informed that Keith had started the rebuilding process on the other house. That it would be finished upon their return home. Outside the sun was shining bright, making the clouds disappear for one of the few days they actually had sunlight. She breathed in the fresh air and smiled today was the start of a new beginning. As she stepped into the taxi she felt in her soul that things were going to be okay and for now there was no danger.
