Nina leaned against the window, the cold glass pressing against her forehead as she stared out into the darkness. The city lights glittered in the distance, indifferent to her turmoil. Her arm throbbed where the mark spread, a silent but relentless reminder of the promise she had made and the price she was about to pay. A soft knock at the door startled her. She turned quickly, wiping her tears before Emily stepped in, her expression a mix of concern and curiosity. “Nina, you okay?” Emily asked, her voice gentle. “You’ve been quiet since we got back.” Nina nodded, forcing a small smile. “I’m fine.
