Chapter 4

I was determined to uncover the truth and see that justice was done for grandpa. There were security cameras inside the hospital room, but Isabelle had cunningly positioned herself to block every angle. All the footage showed was her back as she leaned close and spoke to him. Moments later, my grandfather flew into a terrible rage, so angry that he coughed up blood. Isabelle immediately began defending herself, "I only told him to take good care of his health. I never imagined he would suddenly lash out and strike me across the face. I'm the real victim here." It was such a flimsy, full‑of‑holes excuse. I refused to believe it. Grandpa would never act that way. She must have said something terrible to provoke him. I lunged forward and grabbed her roughly by the arm. "What exactly did you say to him? Who gave you permission to come see my grandfather anyway? What right do you even have to be here?" Isabelle pressed her lips together and feigned hurt, yet a clear, taunting glint shone deep in her eyes. He was my only family left. I could no longer hold back my emotions. I pulled her closer and slapped her hard across the face. Caught completely off guard, Isabelle shrieked in shock. Right there in that quiet corner of the hospital, we began to scuffle fiercely. She was no match for me, and soon her face was scratched and red all over. The noise drew quite a crowd of onlookers. Linus finally rushed over, seized my arm, and tore us apart. In the heat of the moment, he raised his hand and slapped me hard across the cheek. "Look at yourself! You're acting exactly like a madwoman!" Tears spilled out before I could stop them. For my whole life, I had always carried myself with the grace and poise expected of someone born into wealth. I never wanted to lose control and act like some shrew, but this was my grandfather we were talking about. How could anyone possibly expect me to stay calm? Seeing me this way for the very first time, Linus tried to sound magnanimous, hoping to bring the matter to an end. "This stops right here. No more fighting or arguing from either of you." I stared at him in utter disbelief, my voice rising sharply, "Have you forgotten? My grandfather was once the person who saved your life!" Breathing heavily, Isabelle was far from satisfied with how things stood. "She beat me this badly, and that's all there is to it? How is that fair?" Linus pulled out a black credit card and handed it to her as compensation. When he finally turned his gaze back to me, a faint trace of guilt crossed his features. "It was wrong of her to show up unannounced like this, I admit. But she truly meant no harm, and look how badly you injured her. As for what happened to your grandfather, I promise I will make it up to you later. But I will not tolerate you questioning her like this anymore. You have absolutely no proof that she did anything wrong." I staggered backward a few steps, my cheek burning fiercely. "Linus, meeting you is the single greatest regret of my entire life." I swore to myself I would find solid evidence eventually. It was all my fault, I had let my guard down today. I never imagined she would be so shameless and cruel as to deliberately harm my grandfather. Linus furrowed his brows deeply. Before he could say another word, a sharp c***k rang out, and this time, it was his turn to receive a stinging slap right across his face. No one gets to strike me and expects to get away with it... not ever. Just then, hospital staff came hurrying over. "Which one of you is family? The patient has regained consciousness and wishes to speak with you. Please come quickly!"
