A Dangerous Arrangement

The words hung between them like a blade suspended by a thread. “You belong to me now.” Anna’s chest tightened, her pulse racing so hard she thought he might hear it. She told herself to breathe, to stand tall, to fight the urge to shrink beneath the force of Damien Volkov’s stare. But something about his voice, low, smooth, absolute wrapped around her, cut through her resolve. She wanted to demand what he meant, to demand he explain himself. But her tongue felt glued to the roof of her mouth. All she could do was look at him, those dark eyes that saw far more than she wanted them to. “Wh-what do you mean by that?” she managed, her voice softer than she intended. Damien’s lips curved slightly, though there was no humor in the expression. He moved toward her, slow and deliberate, until she had to tilt her chin to keep his gaze. His presence was overwhelming, his shadow devouring hers. “I don’t speak in riddles, Anna,” he said. “That letter puts you in my world. And in my world, there are only two kinds of people those who stand beside me… and those who get crushed.” Her mouth went dry. “I didn’t ask to be in your world.” “No,” he agreed smoothly. “But here you are.” She bristled, forcing her shoulders back. “I came for answers, not to be… claimed like some possession.” Something dangerous flickered in his eyes. He set his glass down with calm precision, then braced his hand against the back of the leather chair beside her, leaning in close enough that she could feel the warmth of his breath against her cheek. “Everything I touch,” he murmured, “becomes mine. And you…” His gaze dipped briefly to her lips before snapping back to her eyes. “…you came here carrying a piece of my past that no one was supposed to see. That makes you mine more than you realize.” Her stomach fluttered in protest, heat climbing her neck. She hated the way her body responded to him, hated that his nearness pulled at something inside her she couldn’t explain. “I’m not for sale,” she whispered, though her voice trembled. Damien’s mouth curved, a wolf’s smile at the trembling of its prey. “Everyone has a price, Anna Bellamy. Some pay in money, others in loyalty. And some…” His eyes lingered on her with a weight that made her skin prickle. “…pay in flesh.” Her breath caught. She shoved at his chest, the hard wall of muscle unyielding beneath her palms. “You can’t just decide that!” For a moment, silence. Then Damien laughed, low and dark. It wasn’t mocking, not exactly, it was the laugh of a man who knew the rules of the world better than anyone else. “You think you can walk into my life,” he said, his tone sharp now, “hand me that—” he lifted the letter, his grip tightening until the paper nearly crumpled—“and then leave untouched? Unclaimed? No, Anna. It doesn’t work that way.” Her chest rose and fell with each shaky breath. The fire crackled in the silence, throwing flickers of light across his face. “What do you want from me?” she asked finally, her voice small. His eyes softened—not with kindness, but with something heavier. “I want your obedience.” The word struck her like a slap. Damien straightened, giving her space again, though his presence still filled the room. He moved to the fireplace, studying the flames as if considering how much truth to give her. “You’ll stay in one of my properties,” he said, his voice calm, clinical, as though he were listing terms of a contract. “You’ll attend my events when I call for you. You’ll be dressed, fed, and kept to my standard. In public, you’ll play your part. In private…” His gaze cut back to her, sharp and unyielding. “…you’ll learn to keep me satisfied.” Heat surged into Anna’s cheeks, fury battling against the panic rising in her chest. “So that’s it? You want to make me your mistress?” The word fell between them, jagged and raw. Damien didn’t flinch. He didn’t deny it. He merely regarded her with the calm certainty of a man who had already decided. “Yes.” Her throat constricted. Her mother’s voice echoed in her mind…Find him, Anna. He owes us more than you know. This wasn’t what she had come for. She wanted answers. Justice. A link between her mother’s dying words and this man’s cold empire. Not this. “You’re insane if you think I’ll agree to that,” she snapped, gathering every ounce of defiance she had left. Damien tilted his head, studying her like one might a stubborn child. “And yet you’re here.” She wanted to deny it, to walk out the door and never look back. But her feet wouldn’t move. She wasn’t stupid. Walking away from Damien Volkov after shoving his secrets in his face would be suicide. His eyes darkened, reading the war inside her. “You’re not stupid enough to leave,” he said, echoing her thoughts. “You know too much. And now…” His lips curved again. “Now you’re mine to keep.” Anna’s pulse hammered. Her pride screamed to argue, but her survival instincts urged silence. He stepped toward her once more, stopping only inches away. His presence burned through her resistance, his gaze pinning her as surely as chains. “You’ll fight me,” he said quietly, almost to himself. “At first. You’ll spit fire, curse my name, try to run. But sooner or later, you’ll understand. You’ll see that the only safe place in this city… is at my side.” Her breath shuddered, a mix of fear and something she refused to name. Damien’s hand lifted, slow and deliberate, his fingers brushing her chin, tilting it upward until their eyes locked completely. The contact was light, but it felt like a brand against her skin. “You don’t have to answer tonight,” he murmured. “But understand this, Anna Bellamy, your choice isn’t whether you belong to me. It’s how you choose to survive it.” Her heart pounded, her body betraying her even as her mind screamed no. The lock on the door clicked again as Damien turned away, slipping the letter back into his pocket. “I’ll have a car sent for you tomorrow,” he said, his voice once more calm, businesslike. “Be ready.” And with that, he left her in the dim lounge, trembling in the flickering firelight, her world spinning out of control.
