Twenty minutes later, we finally reach the service station, parking in a nice empty space. We walk inside and order some McDonald’s.
Collecting our order, Lorenzo carries it to the table.
“I can’t believe you can still eat four Big Macs,” I remark, staring at his abs. He is an alpha. I totally get that, but still, even with all the workouts, it’s unfair.
“I’m a big boy, Red, I need the fuel,” he replies, placing the tray on the table and taking a seat. I slide into the seat opposite him and pick up my Filet-O-Fish. Opening the box, I look across at him, my stomach fluttering when his eyes meet mine.
“Are you still single? Or have you found a man that can tame that temper of yours?” he asks, biting into his burger. I roll my eyes. He’s made enough jabs in the past that it was my feisty temper that men were afraid of.
“Very funny. I don’t need a man who can tame my temper but one who can handle the heat,” I reply icily.
“Oh yeah? I wonder how many men can actually handle the heat.” His gaze dips to my chest before he smirks cockily. “I’ll take that as a no, you’re still single and dry.” He snickers.
“Very funny, Lorenzo. How about you? Are you still a fuckboy, or have you found a mate who can tame your wild ways?” I counter mockingly. I refuse to answer his question. I know he hasn’t found her or the entire pack would have known that their future Luna has been found.
He smirks. “I like my wild ways, Red. A mate would only tie me down from tasting whomever I want whenever I want. There are no rules when it comes to me.” He leans forward and winks at me, making my heart thud loudly in my chest.
“What does that even mean?” I ask, with a toss of my hair.
“Figure it out, Red, figure it out,” Lorenzo murmurs, his gaze dipping to my lips as I suck on my straw. He seems a little too distracted and I move back wondering if I’ve got something on them and lick them slowly. His eyes flash a dazzling deep blue before he frowns, irritation flashing across his face.
What is his problem?
I look down, focusing on my meal again. He seems ok one minute and then the next he’s moody and pissed for no obvious reason.
“Since we’re discussing mates, wasn’t there a Crimson Shadow Pack, like, a month ago?” he asks after several moments of silence.
For us werewolves, we can only find our mates on a Crimson Shadow Pack, a phenomenon that occurs only two nights a year. It is on these nights, once every six months, as long as we are in the proximity of our fated mate, that the mate bond will snap into place.
“Yes, there was,” I reply curtly, frowning down at my Filet-O-Fish.
“Shame,” he murmurs, I don’t bother responding as we continue eating.
Lorenzo's pov
We’re finally back on the road and we’re a little quieter since our pit stop. The conversation between us has felt borderline flirty, and I can’t go down that path, no matter how enticing she or that idea is.
Her every f*****g move makes me want to push her down onto her knees and to have her sexy red lips around my c**k as I- f**k no.
Why did she have to get so much f*****g hotter?
I hate that Dad treats them as if they are his daughters. I hate that she f*****g calls him Dad. Yeah, maybe I am biased since I do see Sienna as my little sister, but… she’s something else. She’s made to sin and we all know that I’m the king of sinning no matter how wrong it might be.
I really need to get a girl tonight and release all this pent-up frustration I have inside of me. I glance at the time; we’ll be home in around twenty minutes since someone is driving at the speed limit or maybe even a little slower.
Goddess, this woman is damn slow, but at least her taste in music is good. I bop my knee to the music, and every now and then my gaze flickers to the feisty redhead in the driver’s seat that I shouldn’t be looking at, but it’s hard not to. Her hair curtains her face as she moves her hips to the music, rolling them sensually and I trail my eyes over her curvy hips and-
Suddenly, I see a blur flash past the car, my eyes blazing as my instincts scream a warning at me.
“Watch out!” I shout, grabbing the steering wheel and jerking it towards me. Aurora lets out a startled scream as she’s thrown into me, but I wasn’t fast enough. Something huge slams into the car, knocking us back as the entire car is lifted from the ground and flips over before smashing into the ground.
The crunch of metal and the violent movements don’t bother me as much as Aurora’s sudden gasp of pain does.
Is she hurt?!
Worry seeps through me as the coppery scent of blood fills my nose and I instantly wrap my arm around her, finding the source. Her waist.
“f**k, Red, you’re bleeding,” I murmur, wondering how deep it is, as I shield her the best as I can until the car finally comes to a stop. She groans in pain, her heart beating wildly. “Hush, I got you.”
Kicking the door off its hinges, I roll out, holding her against me, her head buried in my chest. I stand up, my eyes flashing as I look at the three wolves that are standing a few feet away, growling with hostility.
They aren’t rogues… their scent is enough to tell me that. Two are bigger than average, most like a beta and delta wolf.
But what gets to me is the way their eyes are fixed on her, not me.
“What do you want?” I ask icily as I move Aurora behind me. As much as I want to hold her, if I need to take them on, I need her safe. She’s a small thing and fits behind me perfectly.
The largest of the three now shifts into a young man, he’s not wearing anything and he isn’t bothered by it, but that’s the norm for our kind. He seems to be around my age. His sharp brown eyes meet my blue ones. A sudden harsh wind blows around us, rustling the grass on the roadside.
“Her. Leave her and you are welcome to pass unharmed,” he answers challengingly. He’s from somewhere up north. His accent is enough to tell me that. I sense Aurora tense behind me, and I c**k a brow.
“You’re talking to a f*****g alpha. I don’t take f*****g orders from no one, I give them. Nor do I tolerate disrespect,” I snarl warningly, my voice deepening as my wolf comes forward, my aura radiating off me.
Unease flits across his face and he raises his hand, almost as if in peace, and steps back.
“I understand that, but can I speak to her?” he asks tersely. At least he’s f*****g smart enough to know that he won’t be able to take me.
“No,” I growl, ready to shift, when suddenly Aurora steps forward and places a hand on my arm.
“Aurora,” he says, stepping forward as well. She frowns deeply, watching him intently. “It’s Cade. You may not remember me, but I sure as hell can recognise those green eyes anywhere.”
Aurora’s heart is thundering loudly in her chest, and I look at her sharply. Whoever he is, he knows her, and it’s clear she knows him. But before my mind can run through all possibilities, I quickly rule out any that might be pleasant.
She’s afraid. I can smell the fear in the air around her, feel her grip tightening around my arm and in that moment she’s no longer the feisty redhead who acts like she can take on the world, but someone who needs protection.
I place my hand on her waist protectively, taking care not to be rough with her. She’s bleeding profusely. We need to take care of them fast so she can get the medical attention she needs. I glare at Cade threateningly, my eyes blazing, a silent warning that I will f**k him up if he dares hurt her.
“Ah, mates?” he asks, looking at Aurora. I catch the faint blush that coats her cheeks despite how serious this situation is. My gaze snaps back to Cade.
“Maybe that ain’t your f*****g business,” I growl, as he looks at her observantly. A strong sense of possessiveness courses through me and my anger flares. “Can someone share how the f**k you two know each other?”
“He’s… he’s from my old pack,” Aurora answers quietly, as she leans into me, her breasts pressing against me, something I’m way too aware of.
Her words take a second to register, and I look up in surprise.
Her old pack?
“And you need to return and take your place. The Alpha has sent me,” Cade says quietly, watching us intently. His gaze flickers to Aurora’s neck, which only irks me more. It’s almost as if he’s checking if she’s marked.
“I’m the new Beta, the Beta that will take my place by your-”
“Just leave! I don’t want anything to do with that pack! Now leave before I tear you all to pieces!” Aurora cuts in, her anger rising, her eyes flash dangerously. “Get out of here!”
Her heart is thumping, but it’s obvious she doesn’t want this conversation to continue.
What does he mean by her place? I don’t need to try hard to guess the rest of the sentence. ‘…the Beta that will take my place by your side.’ Is she an alpha’s daughter? Or betrothed to an alpha? There’s something I’m missing, and I want to know exactly what it is.
