CHAPTER 4

Sheila didn’t sit. She barely even breathed. The weight of Victor’s words pressed heavy on her chest, but she forced herself to remain standing, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. “Talk,” she demanded. Victor’s gaze flickered to Daniel for a brief second before settling back on her. “Last night,” he began, “wasn’t just a mistake. It was actually a setup.” Sheila’s stomach twisted. “A setup? What do you even mean right now?” Daniel folded his arms, his jaw tight. “Who set her up?” Victor hesitated before responding. “Patricia.” The room went still. Sheila’s breath caught in her throat. “That’s impossible,” she whispered. “Patricia is my friend, my best friend. She wouldn’t… Oh my God, did she…?” Victor cut her off. “She had her reasons. And believe me, they weren’t good ones.” He said, in a slow tone, while snapping his finger and looking away. Sheila shook her head, not knowing what to say or do anymore, it all got very complicated. Her mind raced a horse. Patricia had always been her rock, the one person she could count on. But now, would she actually be able to confide in her any of her secrets again? “Why would she do that?” Sheila asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Victor exhaled, running a hand through his hair. “She wanted you out of the picture, Sheila. And she knew the best way to do that was to make sure you were compromised. Like I said earlier, last night was not some random occurrence, it was perfectly planned. And if I hadn’t stepped in, things would have been much worse than you think it was.” You should be thanking me. Sheila’s knees threatened to give out. She wanted to deny it, to call Victor a liar, but deep down, something told her he was telling the truth. Daniel, who had remained silent, suddenly spoke. “Sheila, look at me.” She turned to face him, her heart pounding .She did not have much of a choice, she finally felt she should remain humble, despite her inherent pride.“ I know this is a lot,” he said gently. “And I know you don’t want to hear this, but I need you to trust me right now.” But those days were over. Were they not ? Daniel took a cautious step closer. “I never wanted the divorce,” he admitted, his voice laced with an emotion she had not heard in years. “That was your choice. But it did not mean I stopped caring. And right now, more than anything, I need you to let me help you, please… I care about you more than you could ever imagine dear.” Sheila’s throat tightened. “Daniel I …” Before she could find the words, the door swung open, and Patricia walked in boldly with a smile. Her eyes darted between Sheila, Victor, and Daniel, her face now unreadable. “Well,” she said smoothly, “looks like I missed quite the party, so tell me, what did I miss?” Victor tensed, and Daniel stepped in front of Sheila protectively. The room was wide enough for the four of them to stay in, with room for extra five people. Sheila’s room was perfect in all its senses. Patricia smirked. “Relax, gentle men. I only came to check up on my dear friend.” Her gaze locked onto Sheila’s, something unspoken passing between them. But Sheila saw it now, all the deceptions, the manipulations. The best friend she had trusted was no best friend at all after all these while. Before Sheila could speak, Patricia turned her attention to Daniel, her expression shifting. “Though, I must admit,” she purred, “I didn’t expect to see you here.” Daniel’s jaw tightened. He hesitated a bit, turned to look at Sheila, “I could say the same about you, Patricia.” A slow, knowing smile spread across Patricia’s lips. “Oh, Daniel. If only you knew how much I admired you the moment you stepped in here.” Sheila’s stomach churned. Patricia was not just betraying her, she wanted Daniel too. And right in front of her? In her home? Daniel’s expression darkened. “Whatever game you’re playing, Patricia, I want no part of it.” Patricia chuckled. “Oh, sweetheart, you really do not have a choice.” Sheila felt the wall around her closing in, she wanted to grab Patricia by the throat and fling her outside the three story block so she could die by spattering on the floor and dogs would lick her blood and who ever cared could take her body and do whatever with it. She hated her…
