Chapter 16: Exposure Zero

739 Words
“Develop,” they said. One hundred camera-headed Founders. Apertures clicking in unison. A sound like a thousand shutters. The sky above Kisaragi Shrine went black. Not night. Negative black. “Subject 07,” the lead Founder said. “Load us.” I couldn’t move. Thirty-three kids screamed in my skull. Sora’s voice was loudest: _The door’s not for them! It’s for us!_ Zadyen stepped between me and the door. Triple-exposed: Dad, Kenji, Sora bleeding through his eyes. “Tori-chan. Remember Rule #6.” Rule #6: The negative is never in the camera. It’s in you. “I don’t understand!” I shouted. The hum from the vault made my teeth vibrate. Scar laughed. Broken. “You’re Exposure Zero, kid. Zadyen shot you before you were born.” The lead Founder’s lens irised wider. “Incorrect. Exposure Zero is not the subject. It is the event.” Then it projected. Light blasted from its lens-head straight into my eyes. Not to blind. To show. *FLASHBACK: 11/08/1994. Kisaragi Shrine. 11:47 PM.* Zadyen Goyim, younger, no gray, stood in this same courtyard. But the shrine was new. And he wasn’t alone. Twelve people in suits. Section 9’s founders. Men and women who looked like CEOs, not monsters. “Record is final,” Founder #1 said. “Project Limbus will preserve leadership continuity in the event of national collapse.” They filed into the stone door. Willingly. One by one. Each carrying a brass camera. Zadyen was last. He held his Nikon F3. “And the kids?” “Collateral,” said Founder #1. “Thirty-six psychically resonant subjects. Backups. In case the film degrades.” Zadyen didn’t argue. He raised his camera. Click. The photo wasn’t of the Founders. It was of the door. Closing. With all twelve inside. And written on the door in his own blood: EXPOSURE ZERO: WE ARE THE NEGATIVE. DO NOT DEVELOP. Zadyen developed the photo. Not on paper. On me. END FLASHBACK I screamed. Present day. On my knees. The Founders kept advancing. “He used you as the film,” Scar whispered. “Exposure Zero is the command that keeps them locked. You’re not the camera, Tori. You’re the cap. As long as you live, the door stays closed.” “And if I die?” I choked. “Then we develop,” the lead Founder said. “And Japan becomes ours again.” Zadyen collapsed. Kenji’s voice came out: “Dad… can’t hold three… too heavy…” Sora surfaced next. She pointed at the door. At the blood-writing only I could see now: WE ARE THE NEGATIVE. She mouthed two words: Shoot it. I understood. I didn’t have a camera. But I had 33 exposures. And Rule #1: If you photograph it, it’s real. I closed my eyes. Pictured the door. The blood text. The twelve Founders trapped inside as humans, not monsters. I took the picture. With my mind. With my life. EXPOSURE #4 – VOLUNTARY TRANSFER: PHOTO ZERO TO REALITY Pain like a white-hot needle through my skull. The stone door shuddered. The blood writing glowed. The Founders screamed,a digital, corrupted sound. “No! The command! She’s executing Zero!” The lead Founder lunged. Lens aimed at my head. Ren fired Scar’s rifle. The bullet hit the Founder’s lens. Glass shattered. Black fluid sprayed. Not blood. Developer chemical. The Founder staggered back, shrieking. “Contamination! The negative is burning us!” One by one, the camera-headed figures began to melt. The developer fluid ate them from the inside. They were film. And Photo Zero said: DO NOT DEVELOP. The door slammed shut. The light vanished. The sky was night again. Stars. Silence. The Developer’s empty body hit the dirt. Finally dead. Zadyen was unconscious. But breathing. Two heartbeats in his chest now. Kenji and Sora, quiet. Scar stared at me. “You just erased the original Section 9. With a photo that doesn’t exist.” I touched my head. Thirty-two exposures left. “No. I just reminded them they’re the negative.” In the distance, sirens. The light column had been seen. Real Section 9—the human cleanup crew—would be here in minutes. Real Aya pulled me up. “We need to run. Now.” I looked at Zadyen. At the closed door. At my hands. “Rule #9,” I said. “Negatives fight back.” And for the first time since Dad died, I believed it.
