Chapter 59LIKE RIPPLES ON A still pond, word spread through the rebel camp. Their main foe for many years, General Ramos and his top officers were dead. Little by little their commander’s and officer’s death leaked out of the camp and to the army troops outside.
As the story spread, many of the soldiers laid down their weapons and walked away. A few close to the compound were even embraced by the FARC. Many of the soldiers were tired of Ramos’ relentless war on the rebels. Some were even sympathetic to the FARC cause but too afraid to not do as they were ordered. Like their FARC peers, they longed for their homes, families, farms, villages, and most of all, freedom from the fighting.
