The land rose on both sides of the main gate. To one side were sandhills, laid down ages ago as a river cut the valley floor. On the opposite side, the more easterly slope and exposed to the west sun, were treeless hills covered with rabbit brush and sagebrush. The steep areas above the sandhills were rarely visited by Heather, Jim, or any of the ranch people. Even the cows did not venture there as there was more grass on the sunny eastern side. It was the perfect choice to observe the ranch road and Balky Hill Road where Heather and Pedro were walking.
