Chapter 19THE REBEL BAND ENCOUNTERED no one during the first two days. Even so, Jago had the persistent feeling that they were being watched. They found three dugouts. It was slower paddling against the current, but a welcome reprieve from fighting their way through foliage along the river’s edge. Late afternoon on the second day, they heard distant sounds. After hiding the dugouts, they made camp. The next morning, the small group moved cautiously toward the sounds and discovered their sourceminers—gold miners. They backtracked to a slope so they could climb to higher ground above the river. There was a small, steep-sided u-shape-cut that Jago decided would make a secure camp.
