Chapter 9: The Claws at the Pass
A freezing blizzard howled through the narrow, razor-sharp granite walls of the Lowlands Pass—the treacherous gateway that separated the Bloodmoon territory from the Forbidden Mountains.
Alpha Kaelen rode at the head of his fifty elite war-wolves. They were clad in heavy iron ringmail and fur cloaks, their weapons drawn, their faces hardened against the biting cold. But beneath their disciplined exterior, a pervasive sense of dread hung over the squad.
The horses refused to go any further, rearing back and screaming in terror until the warriors were forced to dismount and continue on foot.
"Keep your eyes open!" Kaelen growled, his voice rasping through his throat. He pulled his heavy broadsword from its sheath, his knuckles white around the leather grip. The black veins on his neck were throbbing violently, sending spasms of sharp pain down his spine every time his boots hit the icy snow. "She is in these canyons! Spread out!"
"Alpha," his chief tracker whispered, pointing a trembling, leather-gloved finger toward the heavy fog ahead. "The scent... it isn't right."
Kaelen paused, sniffing the howling wind.
Usually, a wolf tracker could pick up the scent of sweat, blood, or fear from miles away. But here, the air tasted strange. It smelled of sulfur, intense heat, and crushed berries—a heavy, suffocating scent that made his inner wolf whine and press its tail between its legs in absolute submission.
"Advance!" Kaelen barked, pushing past the tracker. "She's trying to scare us with simple illusion magic!"
They rounded the final bend of the canyon, emerging onto a broad, snow-covered stone plateau flanked by sheer thousand-foot cliffs.
Standing at the center of the plateau, completely alone in the howling blizzard, was a figure.
Kaelen froze, his breath catching in his chest.
She wore a gown of liquid midnight silk that fluttered softly in the icy wind. Her long hair, now streaked with brilliant silver and gold, flowed over her shoulders like a queen's mantle. She stood tall, straight, and unbroken, her bare feet resting lightly on the snow, which melted into clean steam the moment her skin touched it.
"Seraphina..." Kaelen gasped out, a sudden, violent surge of shock and relief hitting his chest.
For a second, the heavy, agonizing weight of the Rejector's Curse seemed to pause. She was alive. She was right in front of him.
"You're alive," Kaelen stepped forward, a triumphant, desperate smile breaking across his pale face as he lowered his sword. "You foolish girl... you survived. Come here. Right now. We are returning to the pack house."
Seraphina did not move. She turned her head slowly, looking at him.
When Kaelen met her gaze, his heart stopped.
Her eyes were not the soft, submissive hazel he had looked down upon for six years. They were burning pools of liquid amethyst and gold, glowing with a cold, terrifying authority that made his knees tremble.
"Return?" Seraphina spoke. Her voice was not a whisper. It was a clear, melodic chime that carried over the roaring blizzard, vibrating in the chest of every warrior present. "To scrub your floors, Kaelen? To let your step-sister slap my face while you turn your back?"
Kaelen winced, the dark veins on his neck flaring with sharp pain. He took another forced step forward, trying to project his Alpha aura—the heavy, hypnotic pressure meant to force lower-ranking wolves to their knees.
"You are my fated mate!" Kaelen commanded, his voice booming across the plateau. "The Moon Goddess gave you to me! I made a mistake, Seraphina! I admit it! But you will submit to your Alpha and return to save our pack!"
The fifty warriors behind him raised their weapons, preparing to surround her.
Seraphina looked at the fifty heavily armed wolves, and then she smiled—a slow, breathtaking, lethal smile that sent a wave of sheer terror through Kaelen’s core.
"You think the Moon Goddess bound me to you to be your savior?" she asked softly.
She took one slow step forward.
*BOOM!*
A shockwave of pure, golden-orange heat exploded outward from her body! The snow on the plateau instantly vaporized, turning into a towering wall of white steam! The sheer kinetic force sent the fifty war-wolves tumbling backward, their iron armor clattering against the rock as they screamed in shock!
From behind Seraphina’s back, two colossal wings of black obsidian scales and burning violet fire erupted, unfurling fifty feet wide into the stormy sky!
The heat radiating from her burned away the blizzard for miles around, revealing the clear, dark sky above.
Kaelen fell to his knees, his broadsword clattering onto the bare stone as he stared up at her in absolute, blinding horror. His inner wolf wasn't just whimpering now—it was screaming in primal terror, completely paralyzed by a apex predator it had no concept of.
"You rejected a servant, Alpha Kaelen," Seraphina said, her voice dropping into a double-layered, resonant roar that shook the very granite cliffs around them. "And in her place... you awakened a Empress."
